Something that's
a)well-translated
b)not featuring the reincarnated protagonist dunking on his high school classmates/humiliating shallow women
c)not about people literally playing video games

For instance, other than dungeon defense, I've also found reincarnator to be pretty decent.

they are all shallow power fantasies, but Everyone Else is a Returnee, Seoul Station's Necromancer and Main Character Hides His Strength are still pretty decent.

I have all the volumes other then the latest one, which is still on its way here.

For the Kumoko parts, the first 2 1/2 volumes are basically directly taken from the web novel with only slight editing. It starts diverging at the end of volume 3 where the fight against Araba and everything surrounding it was completely rewritten.
Volume 4 is almost completely new content set between Kumoko finding the exit to the dungeon and her meeting the vampire-baby for the first time, that ends with her fighting Mother head on, instead of just getting a random mega-levelup out of nowhere.
Volume 5 goes back to web novel content again, but with big differences, that end with Kumoko joining up with Ariel, Sophia and Merazophis while she's still an Arachne and not a god yet.

On Shun's side, the differences were there right from the beginning. The novel version skips all the chapters with Shun as a baby and only starts at the appraisal ceremony (but some of the content from the early chapters is integrated in later ones). It also introduces a new character who was reborn as an earth dragon. This changes some details in the early chapters, but the bigger divergence also starts in volume 3 with the coup, because Sophia is actively involved there instead of just secretly doing things in the background like in the web novel.

Volume 6 (released this week) is supposed to be 100% original content.

tl;dr: If you don't want to reread things, start with volume 3, because that's where the big differences start.

I represent the Philippines
This was recommended in TBB, and isn't originally in Japanese (pretty sure the author is American), but I just binged what's available of The Wandering Inn, which has very clear influences from isekai novels; possibly Kumoko, and just a teeny tiny bit of Honzuki. On top of that though, there's also a lot that's obviously being drawn from Worm, so if any or all of those float your boat, you might be interested in it. It makes use of the level-up/class/skill system I hate in isekai novels, but it subverts this in an interesting way by asking _why_ levels even exist, and hinting that there's some sinister purpose behind why all thinking creatures have levels and classes--one character in particular is important because she's chosen to actively reject all levels and skills.

It does avoid the major pitfalls of having a game system. No chapters that are mostly statblock, no dumb level grinding, and as mentioned, there are hints that the game system is tied directly into the plot, rather than just being there to give bigger numbers to the protagonist. No dumb power fantasy, actually, either. It's much closer to something like Guardians of the Flame than your average isekai.

I couldn't get into Worm but not because of the content, just because there's no downtime, at all, once it gets going. I found it mentally exhausting to read.

I have one WN that I've been reading for a while that hasn't been mentioned in this thread, Akuyaku Reijo Ni Koi Wo Shite. I think it's held up pretty well so far. A man gets reincarnated as a slums child and ends up serving as the butler to a pair of noble siblings. It's a game world, but it's not a game he was familiar with so he doesn't realize it until later, and those noble children end up being the designated petty villains that get taken out by the protagonist before dealing with the demon lord. It doesn't have levels or stats and actually does something with the idea of being a character in a game with a pre-determined plot. I find it changes things up enough to avoid getting stale and there are some significant events with real consequences.

Yeah ISSTH is full on revenge porn right now. At least Meng Hao (and the author?) seems to understand that he's been driven insane and he doesn't seem to be deriving any joy from the process. But yeah full on genocide plus eternal torment with no chance for either reincarnation or just permanent death.

I guess we have another 50 chapters of him killing the Immortal and God worlds and then maybe we get the conclusion and learn more about Allheaven and all that jazz. Or more likely the transcendent cultivators from the Immortal and God world will show up and keep him from massacring their homelands or whatever. Ultimately though I want to finish the story and learn more about the world. I believe A Will Eternal is also set in the same universe. Assuming Meng Hao stays the demon then God, Devil, Demon, and the new guy from A Will Eternal could end up being the Immortal?

Irisize
Sep 30, 2014

I would be fine with the whole revenge thing if it was more involved than "Meng Hao waves his hand"

Like, the buildup for this has been what feels like hundreds of chapters long and then all the tension is just... gone.

loving lol at the part of Shield Hero where the protagonist's slave girl is freed and it's treated as this terrible event, and the slave girl herself is even upset about it and decides she wants to be re-enslaved by the protagonist. When you consider that this is the author's way of basically saying "a good woman is one who both literally wants to be your slave and literally has the mind of a child", it's so hosed up that it sort of crosses over into being funny. I also liked how the protagonist defended buying the slave by saying "well, do you think other people aren't also buying slaves?" I was looking at the manga adaptation and almost all the comments are talking about how badass the misanthropic protagonist is and how much they want the woman who tricked him at the beginning to be brutally raped and murdered. For some reason I find it genuinely interesting that people so dumb and terrible that they would find this MC and his actions to be good/reasonable exist.

I wonder if WNs like this are actually all secretly written by Chinese spies with the intent of rendering Japanese males undateable and decreasing Japan's population.

edit: Hahahahahha look at this comment. Mind you, this comment is about the slave girl, not the girl who tricked the protagonist. Jesus Christ what is wrong with people.

fuckin nerds man posted:

And here we are again... This girl is just a slut.
When that spear hero tried to grab her "before" the last wave (at the church), she totally let him touch her all over the place; and would have just let herself be taken away.
Then yet again with the Guard Commander at the village, saying "he's on his side"; as to reconcile them. Naofumi needs to kill these 'human filth', and there she is considering them to be human.
She always wants Naofumi to let his guard down near the shop owner.

And now, she is letting the 'magic' controlling pimp to do whatever he wants all over her breasts. What if the guy actually makes her "HIS" slave, instead of Naofumi's, by making the tattoo belong to him? Then Naofumi can't fight to save her; and she can't fight, cause she would be under the "curse"...

Really she pisses me off, so much. It seems to me, that the "Shield Hero" isn't all that useless as it is perceived to be. And if he wasn't lazy and worked day/ night, fighting monsters from low to high ranks ON HIS OWN! he could actually become a great hero.
But instead he lets his heart open, for another possible stab; and let's his emotions get in the way. What if EVERYTHING was planned by the King? Like even the circus magician + this girl. It is possible, since she was about the only decent slave he could afford at the time.
I know she's just an idiot, but he's even dumber, for letting her take his guard down, beside her.

Real hero's don't need "someone who believes in them"; but ONLY THEMSELVES. Cause if that was the case, we would NEVER have ANY heroes. People just aren't trustworthy. Only the ones who believes IN THEMSELVES, can reach higher realms.

vvv It is a joke.

It felt a bit rough at the beginning but after Ryoka's big fuckup I think it found what it wanted to be and improved a lot. Speaking of Ryoka, my biggest complaint with the series is that Ryoka reads like someone's min-maxed special snowflake D&D character with charisma as their dump stat, while everyone else at the metaphorical table is really getting into their roles.

Yes, I didn't want to get too specific but it's like someone being told that they're invited to a roleplay heavy D&D campaign set in an explicitly video game world with a level system just for fun, and then spending the next week min-maxing their character for that.

I don't particularly like reading about the perfect little snowflake who can do everything on her own (except make friends, how tragic) working through her anger issues in another world. Especially when it feels like she took them, along with "dislikes shoes," as character flaws so she could max out her base stats and general knowledge. Sure, the DM is punishing her for it, but I'd rather just have more Rags or Toren chapters.

She can't do everything on her own, half the time she tries to do anything she ends up nearly dying and having to be saved by other people.

She knows kung-fu? That's great for fighting people or goblins, less useful against giant wolves or rock monsters.

She's faster than anyone else when she's running barefoot? Not on sharp rocks or snow she isn't.

She rejects the skill system, and the power it offers? Good luck keeping up with people who can break the laws of physics.

She's far from the most likeable character in the story, but it's refreshing to see a web novel featuring an edgy anti-social loner who isn't some infallible demigod.

The story does great job of making her insufferable to the reader and everyone around her and then humbling her until she realizes what a lovely person she is.

Does it? Because where I stopped reading it, she can use her kung fu just fine against giant wolves, she can run just fine on sharp rocks, she can run faster than people who are using the skill system specifically to run faster, she can make friends faster than anyone being nice....

She got her poo poo absolutely wrecked by the wolves, and the sheep that scared them off, and the gargoyles that ate the sheep. As far as we have actually seen, she's been effective against overconfident adventurers and low level bandits. She (as a well trained modern runner) can run faster and longer than the low level street and city runners that she works with. When she finally meets a Courier, again, she gets her poo poo absolutely wrecked in literally every way. She has no actual friends, just a single group of adventurers who feel like they owe her, and one noble who wants to use her for their own purposes. She pisses off -literally everybody else she meets-, and proceeds to burn her bridges even with the people inclined to like her, because she is a complete rear end in a top hat. The only person who actually likes her is Erin, and Erin likes everybody by default.
