https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRsfOGJ5lZg This is goofy as hell but also demonstrates an alarming level of intelligence. Birds are scary smart, and if it wasn't for us I'd say they have a better chance of evolving into sapience than any other type of animal. Cockatiels are goofy, as well. http://i.imgur.com/PpZaeEK.mp4

The Great Blue Heron is my poo poo, I live in the Sac-San Joaquin Delta area and if you know where they like to hang out at, they're everywhere. (Not my pics) They're great huge bastards, and they'll eat just about anything - I once saw a GBH trying to eat a large red squirrel while standing by the side of a busy freeway in Chino Hills, California, of all places. The tail was hanging out of the side of his bill and I assume he was trying to turn it around in order to swallow it whole. Normally their diet is made up of fish, invertebrates, amphibians, whatever lives in shallow water. They're very solitary, don't make a whole lot of noise, are always impeccably clean while standing in muddy swamps, bogs, ditches and so forth. They've made a huge comeback from their early Seventies DDT-depleted numbers and I'm glad of it.

I moved from England to the US twelve years ago and I miss European robins so much. They're adorable little borbs and super curious about humans. They're especially fond of people gardening and like to hang about to grab any earthworms that get turned up when you're digging. They'll even let you hand feed them! Totally wild robins will just hop on over and take seed straight from your hand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKfBW334zFM I miss these friendly little fluffballs.

As a kid in the country I had "pet" ducks along with chickens and geese. They were co-op mallards that very quickly grew up and flew away. They wanted nothing to do with me, but it was super cool that the next 2 years they came back and one had a wild girlfriend who would let me come within 5 feet to throw them grain. After that I never saw them again, but it was cool af as a kid to see "my" ducks come back every year to this random rear end farm to try and nest. Hopefully they found a better place instead of being eaten by a coyote.

When I was a kid we had a random pigeon move into our garage. He lived there for about a year, my mom is a real softie for animals so she would leave the garage door open a little at the bottom so he could go in and out. One very cold night she was sitting in the living room and heard some commotion at the front door. It was the pigeon, she'd accidentally closed the garage all the way so the little guy got locked out. She told me once she opened the door he very casually strolled in, walked over to where the garage entrance was, and patiently waited for her to let him in. Now she keeps chickens and I swear she loves those chickens more than she ever did us. Every time I call her it's "the chickens are doing this" and "the chickens are doing that". It's actually pretty endearing.

Okay, more real birds this time. These were from my trip to New Zealand. Kea, the sly alpine parrot. Silvereye Hybrid offspring of mallard and gray ducks. Tiny blue penguins! They were rescues being cared for a the International Antarctic Center in Christchurch. Fantails are hard to photograph, they never stop moving!

If we're taking about vaguely naked birds, there's Jersey the Cockatoo. She had a bad owner for a long while, and she plucked herself bare, but her current owner is a ton better. I'd judge the fact that she's still pretty bare long after she was rehomed with the current owner, but I have zero knowledge of bird-owning to know if they even grew back.

They do grow back but once plucking starts it can be hard to stop, even if the bird is rehomed. Poor neurotic babies.

They are actually quite smart and can have a massive vocabulary. They're one of the smallest true parrots and I love them. Here is one of the babies I'm adopting. She's not quite weaned, so I just visit for now. She's a Rosy Bourke, a type of parakeet. I also have a sun conure, a blue parakeet, and a green cheek conure. I'll post those later along with some wild birds.

Hummingbirds are probably my favorite thing in the world. My parents live in the Sierra Nevada foothills and must live on a flyway or something because they get squadrons of Anna's Hummingbirds throughout the year, and Rufous and Calliope hummingbirds during the migration season. Anna's hummingbirds are aeronauts that put Top Gun instructors to shame and they're one of the few species to have expanded their habitat along with human population growth since they have no fear of humans and will happily pig out in suburban gardens or crowded public parks.

Man, I love hummingbirds. Most of the hummingbirds we get here are rufous hummingbirds, which are noted for being the most northern-ranging hummingbirds. You'll find them all the way up the coast into Alaska. Little red-brown birds with green wings and backs. Very, very occasionally you get a calliope hummingbird (we're just at the very northern edge of their breeding range) who I adore because they look like they're trying to turn themselves into asterisks.
