In my Ford it involves rapidly turning the car on and off several times while plugging and unplugging the seat belt.

Yeah it's usually like some wierd automotive Konami code.

My Toyota has 'day headlights' which are small strips of lights that are always on when the car is running and the main headlights are off.

There's a way to turn them off by switching the headlights on and off rapidly. Weird stuff.

I am in favour of these since it increases the chances of drink drivers not wearing belts and being more likely to die in their first accident.

I'm only against them because the idiots without seat belts can be flung through the windshield and become projectiles that maim or even kill others that they hit.

If the risk was solely to themselves, sure, let them do what they want. But as soon as the risk extends to others, that's where you gotta draw the line, I think.

Has that ever actually happened where a person ejected from a vehicle caused meaningful injuries or death outside of the vehicle? I know there are plenty of cases of unsecured people/pets inside a vehicle injuring other passengers inside, but I'm not sure the risk from these idiots really extends to others outside of their vehicle in a practical sense.

Of course I assume if one of those guys that got launched 50 feet in the air in those Saudi drift rollover videos lands on someone it's not going to be good, but that's a pretty extreme case.

Yup. My old roommate rolled her truck due to bad driving, and was also not wearing a seat beat. She flew out into the back of someone else's car and nearly killed two passengers.

I think you're right in that it's much more likely to impact other people inside the car rather than outside (let alone in another car). So that's a fair point. Though stories like this certainly aren't totally outlandish: https://www.ksl.com/?sid=26954581

Your seat belt also serves to keep you in front of the wheel in the case of unexpected high G maneuvers.

This was especially worse back when there were bench seats.

Its quite an experience sliding all the way over to the passenger side taking a hard left.

Cops never wear their seatbelts, or at least city cops where I am don't. 100% the belt is buckled in behind the driver so the chime doesn't go off all day long and they just drive around sitting on the belt driving like maniacs. Pretty crazy and I expect it's a big factor in how many are killed or injured in crashes.

It's kindof the whole point. All of the parts crushing and falling apart means that force wasn't directed into the driver. Car did its job well.

Well, the more energy the exterior absorbs (thus the flying apart) the less energy reaches the interior (IE the driver)

Imagine youre strapped into a machine where your head's left exposed, and it gets dropped 10 feet down onto a corner of a wall, not flat ground. Also, you're upside down and grinding sideways at like 80mph at that point.

When you break it down, a crash like this sounds like it has no business being survivable.. it's incredible and a testament to the R&D going into keeping these drivers safe.

That's all happening way too fast for a human to react to it in any meaningful way. Not much choice for him except to sit there and watch it happen.

If you're referring to the slits it's to avoid stalling the wing so it'll continue to produce downforce as the angle of attack increases.
