If anyone likes the weirdness and mystery of Twin Peaks but hates how slow and boring it is, along with the creator jerking himself off with weird things that mean nothing just to appear "out there" or whatever, give Legion a try. It's just as weird but has a story and isn't filmed with 50% silence/staring every episode.

This is really helpful to me, a person who watched the episodes, thought "this is too slow paced for me", then went to the Something Awful Twin Peaks Thread and read all 37 pages hoping someone would tell me what to watch. I'm definitely a real person and there are thousands like me. We are all banding together to give you a medal and a lovely big cake.

BCS has a story and a plot. If I had to watch 20 minutes of Saul Goodman making coffee and farting then finally just get up and walk out the door yeah I wouldn't like it either.

I mean this show has a story and plot. It uses a pretty specialized vocabulary that it developed over the first two season. We understand everything that we are meant to at this point. The stuff with the eyeless women is unclear for now (except for the practical mechanics of what happens in the scene).

That stuff may not be totally decipherable yet but it was creepy and intense and moody. I understand how if none of that landed for you the scene would be boring but swaggering into the thread and being like "let me tell you about a little show called Leigion" is pretty goofy.

On a related note I think it's kind of incredible that the show has trained it's audience to an extent that a lot of the Black Lodge stuff IS largely readable despite seeming like nonsense when written out.

I can't even parse half this post. What does "box-watching enthusiasts" and "serial experiments lain" mean?

I don't get the criticism of this as just weird for the sake of being weird, because "weird" is such a broad term. I mean Twin Peaks is weird, The Leftovers is weird, Xavier Renegade Angel is weird, the Transformers movies are weird, that criticism is weird. But they're all very different, under the same general adjective. Lynch creates a certain mood, tone, and symbolic vocabulary that is unique to him. The pacing is a big part of that.

Barreft posted:

Serial Experiments Lain is another tv series, and I guess they mean people who liked the sub-plot of the guy hired to watch the box would like that show too.

We don't know that she was or wasn't anyone special, and whether she's a character we already know (the original series had one asian woman character, Josie Packard, who was last seen trapped in a wooden drawer knob) or someone who will come into play later in the season. Twin Peaks isn't paced like other TV shows.

That's the logic I'm working from.

Each curtain he moved through was a trial and he failed when he had to confront his evil side.

Major Briggs said he was scared Love wouldn't conquer all, and he was right. Coop's "love", for Annie or whatever, wasn't enough when faced with his own capabilities of evil.

Barreft, if this helps, my guess with the place at the start of 3:

Hawk describes the Lodges in the original series as being the concepts that his people had of two parallel incarnations of some spiritual plane. The White Lodge was where the spirits who ruled over humanity and the forces of nature dwelt in peace, while the Black Lodge was the "Shadow self" of the White Lodge, a darker place, full of tests and tribulation and where you would face your own shadow self (see: Dopplegangers), who served as one such test that, if faced with "unperfect courage" would basically result in the destruction of the one who was tested.

Meanwhile, you also have season 2's antagonist, Windom Earl (Cooper's former mentor and partner in the FBI), who learned of the Lodges through his own government work possibly relating to some of the Project Bluebook stuff happening in the first two seasons with Maj. Briggs. His own description seems to match up with Hawk's description, that the White Lodge was a place of beauty and peace, where people did good for no reason beyond doing good, while he seemed to assign the Black Lodge a certain level of power that someone with the right knowledge and determination could harness to effectively change the world; he also described it as basically being full of howling mad spirits ready to tear you apart just as soon as say hello.

So the basic gist is: The Lodges are essentially the Cosmology of the Twin Peaks Universe. You've got the mundane world and then you got the crazy, next-level-up poo poo that consists of the Red Room (said to be the "Waiting Room") and the strange beings who exist there (along with the dead, in some cases). Episode 2, Cooper's basically dropped out of there into the vast Cosmic void until he manages to land on some weird-rear end place with an infinite cosmic sea.

So then, really what is all this? What are all these people? The blunt answer is something, I think, along the lines of "The Cosmic Existence beyond the mundane world of humans, the entities/spirits that live in it and work in it, all perceived as best a human mind can probably perceive this crazy poo poo that's well beyond the comprehension of a human brain to perceive and make sense of."

I think Hawk's explaination pretty much agrees with that viewpoint; from the previous series:

quote:

Deputy Tommy 'Hawk' Hill: My people believe that the White Lodge is a place where the spirits that rule man and nature reside. There is also a legend of a place called the Black Lodge. The shadow self of the White Lodge. Legend says that every spirit must pass through there on the way to perfection. There, you will meet your own shadow self. My people call it The Dweller on the Threshold.

Special Agent Dale Cooper: Dweller on the Threshold.

Deputy Tommy 'Hawk' Hill: But it is said that if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul.

EDIT: One can suppose that Dale hasn't necessarily yet failed in his confrontation with his shadow self, but perhaps his arc this season is essentially having to continue to engage with it, lest he be annihilated.

Like, when the Laura doppelganger confronts him multiple times, it serves as a warning of what he's about to face.
Maybe it was his guilt over Caroline that unraveled his resolve? He seems confused as soon as Caroline and Annie become mixed up. Did he lose focus? Is that why he's nearly braindead now?

I'm reminded of that whole "Flatland" concept, where a two-dimensional being would perceive a three-dimensional being as essentially a chaotic mutation of shapes as it passed through its plane.

Basically the bullshit nonsense of the Lodge and its denizens are our chaotic mutation of familiar shapes.

This indicates a Gnostic layering to the Peaksverse, where the White Lodge is the actual source of existence and the Black Lodge serves as a sort of Demogorgon, warping its power to create the Material World. It would certainly fit with the timelessness of the otherworlds and the statements Jeffries makes in FWWM.
