Okay, now I'm glad the Flames didn't get him, that is WAY too much for him. I know he's mostly been pretty good over his career, but last year was rough on him and he turns 31 this year. That said, he's probably still a huge upgrade over Dallas' current bunch.

Probably Calgary's, too, I just feel like somewhere between 3.5 and 4 would have been more reasonable. I guess Calgary has to either pluck somebody out of Europe, or sign somebody like Miller, Condon or Bernier and hope for the best.

Don't forget the nmc! Gotta keep all that goalie talent in Dallas locked down.

Though legit if they have bishop two seasons ago they're a cup threat. Oh well, Nill stands by his decision re: lol, who even needs defenders?

I don't follow the Flyers, but I love reading BSH. Their analysis and discussion of the Flyers' PP last playoffs really helped me understand the general dynamics and attempted strategies of special teams in general, and I wish the Penguins had something equivalent in quality.

Did you guys discuss the best thing the NYT has published in years yet?

"On the day of the skate, as the N.H.L. players arrived at the rink, Ferrara slipped into the facility through a door on the opposite side of the arena. “Snuck in like Batman,” he later joked. Calder had secured all the official gear he could — Blackhawks pants, gloves, a practice jersey, any equipment he could find, Calder recalled, that would help Ferrara appear to be a bona fide member of the team.

Ferrara dressed on his own in a separate locker room. There, he said, he waited. Finally, he donned a Blackhawks helmet with a visor that obscured much of his face, and when the N.H.L. players took the ice and began to glide in circles, Ferrara opened a door to the rink. He hopped onto the ice, lowered his gaze, and hoped no one would notice.

As the cool ice passed beneath him, it was time to prove that he belonged.

The first drill began, and Ferrara gathered a puck while skating toward Blackhawks goalie Jocelyn Thibault, an All-Star who had missed time in previous seasons with concussion-related symptoms. Just two minutes into the practice, Ferrara teed up his first shot to put on net. He watched in horror as the puck rocketed away from its intended place, crashing into the forehead of Thibault’s mask."

"For his first crack at the minors, Ferrara deployed a favored con he would use time and again. In 2003, he called up the Bakersfield Condors, a team in the East Coast Hockey League, and pretended to be his own agent, claiming he had this tough, gritty kid named Nello Ferrara the Condors ought to see. He caught the ear of the team’s general manager, who instructed the man on the phone to tell Ferrara to report for training camp."

"Another time, a team named the South Carolina Stingrays brought Ferrara in and was somewhat confused when he arrived. He had told management that he was 27, but when the team payroll department ran his tax information, it showed he was 33. Ferrara insisted the computer was lying. The Stingrays shrugged it off, Ferrara said, and kept him on their roster, anyway."

"He has not played a professional hockey game since 2014, though he remains obsessive about his physique and conditioning. Ferrara still scours transaction logs of minor league teams, tracking injuries and call-ups in case one of them might need a player like him. He is either in the gym or on the ice, often both, six days a week, prepared just in case a team happens to call."

and so on

Yeah Charlie O'Connor has done a phenomenal job for them. He makes fancy-stats pretty digestible for idiots like me and their coverage on the whole beats the poo poo out the standard beat guys for the Flyers (not that that's a very high bar to clear, mind you)

Yeah it's hard to find legitimate tactical breakdowns for hockey. Reading Justin Bourne's "Unique Team Traits" series on The Score from a few years back helped me a ton when it came to understanding more subtle aspects of hockey plays. I wish more bloggers in general would do stuff like those BSH articles.

Cool, I'll have to check that out if I can. Like, poo poo, I moved to Pittsburgh ten years ago and didn't start watching hockey casually until six years ago and actually trying to watch tactical play or understand the game just got started maybe four years ago. I didn't grow up with it and I definitely can't play it (I'm 29 and can move around an ice rink without falling over or crashing into someone. Probably.) But I love watching it and the more I understand about it, the more I like watching it, so anything that helps I'll take a look at. Hell, its why I lurk around here. For all the curmudgeonly fans, there's a lot to learn too.

I might move to Nashville in the next year depending on how some applications work out, so these playoffs have been great.

It would suck so much if central Floridans that luckily got rich just decided to move to Pittsburgh. That's essentially what happened to Tampa. No wonder you are so bitter.

it's a little different than just a dude backing down from statements

quote:

Scott went on the air to clarify a few things about his comments. First, he said the interview from ESPN was “like a year and a half ago, maybe two years ago,” and that he didn’t expect it would be aired during this segment on Subban.

"It’s nothing personal against P.K. I hadn’t met him at that time, and now that I met him, I actually like the guy. He’s a good guy off the ice. But on the ice, I don’t like him. That’s just all there is to it. I’m not going to back down from that. I didn’t like playing against him."

Brian MacLellan just held a press conference and basically said nothing would change.

I guess this is fine because they crushed the regular season and were an average goaltending performance away from winning in round 2, but man if ever I were to put stock in intangibles it would be with the Capitals. Something isn't right there and I feel like if any team needs a shakeup it's them.

Yeah it would be dumb to blow up the best team in the NHL... and yet I said before the playoffs started that if the Caps don't win the Cup this year they're never going to, everything was aligned for them, and I think that will be proven correct.

Counterpoint though is that if Ovechkin hadn't gotten his knee blown up in round 1, that alone would probably have pushed them past the Pens and they would probably now be about to win the Cup
