I'd like to talk to some cool and chill goons and televised programming is pretty great so let's talk TV, shall we? I love TV! Particularly comedies and cartoons for the most part, although I've been known to enjoy a variety of other programming from food to documentaries to crime thrillers to science fiction. Although I can be picky, I like to think that I can always respect effort and quality. There's a certain respect that I have for really good television shows- the way I see it, there are lot of restrictions when it comes to putting together a TV show episode compared to writing and producing a movie, and that makes it all the more impressive when it comes together despite the time and budgetary constraints. Every single thing has to happen for a good reason, or else it's just a waste of money, bearing in mind that your average viewer probably isn't going to appreciate the little subtleties because turning on a television and glancing at the screen is a little different than paying to see or sitting down and watching a legitimate film. To me, this makes television like 30 Rock, The Office, Extras, or Arrested Development not just written but crafted. There are some jokes in Arrested Development that viewers won't even get unless they've seen future episodes! That's expecting a lot out of the typical watcher! Not all shows are perfect, but some of them have got some drat good elements in them or at least remain a consistently good quality for extended periods of time. Ever paid attention to the set direction in Workaholics? It's actually really impressive. Cartoons are a personal favorite of mine too, and have been for as long as I can remember. People can cry "man child" all they want, but cartoons are made by adults too, so it blows my mind when the little subversive details are overlooked. Those 90's Warner Bros cartoons are a clusterfuck of old references that no child is going to understand, both subversive and non. I don't think I even need to bring up The Rugrats. But that's enough of my Anyone else appreciate good TV too? What are you watching right now? What's your favorite TV show that you can watch over and over? What show do you think is an ongoing train wreck that should have shuffled off it's mortal coil twenty years ago? (The Simpsons) What show should EVERYONE ABSOLUTELY, MUST watch? (Community) This image will have to do since I couldn't find a loop of Heffer saying "TV". Oh, Anime is acceptable too (although not all might think so, a notion I entirely understand) but let's stick to what's at least aired on regular television outside of Japan in order to avoid a some kind of rabbit hole situation. Recently I remembered that the Cyborg 009 2001 reboot was a thing, so I've been watching that myself lately. 30 Rock is literally on right now. |

Cartoons were meant for adults initially but kids would still watch them. It's a shame because back then a lot of the cartoons were racist, so instead of kids growing up to like poop jokes and rude humor they grew up to make others feel bad for no good reason |

Macnult posted:I started watching Space Ghost Coast to Coast on Adult Swim's website and I can only imagine what it must've been like to watch it on television I wish I was sentient enough at the time to be able to appreciate Space Ghost when it was on. It's so wonderfully dadaist. Also, that's a fascinating take (no really) on the evolution of the cartoon's target audience vs. the actual content. These days, many cartoon creators have found that happy medium between overly subversive and juvenile, I think. Adventure Time has gotten weird, but is still mostly decent and is thankfully ending soon, and Regular Show had a pretty good run. The Amazing World of Gumball is also actually very watchable. It's more related to film, but poo poo like Minions drive me crazy because early Pixar already proved to us over and over that there's animated content that can be appreciated by all ages. Doctor Dogballs posted:I only watch anime's and pornoe's WELL YOU CAN JUST GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE. No, no I don't really mean that. Both of those things are still... technically TV. everyone should have to watch all the episodes of Wonder Showzen at least once, in a fairly short period of time, say a month or so. I'm not saying it's the best show, or that doing that won't make you depressed, but its for your own good

Space Ghost started in 94 and ran for ten years it would seem. There's an era of TV that I certainly miss. The old days of the Toonami Midnight Run and the very earliest instances of Adult Swim. Also, I never saw Dr. Katz but I loved Home Movies. They both do good work, but I think after the two of them split it's easy to tell that Louren Bouchard has a just a little more talent and focus. Metalocalypse is still good though. Tell me more! |

Wonder Showzen was usually funny with the stuff on the streets, like the "Beat Kids" segment wtih the reporter kid going around asking age innaporopriate questions. The scripted puppet segments made me cringe like 85% of the time though. Space Ghost was always wierd, and it unapologetically knew it, but often it would end up being very hilarious. I always wondered how much the guests heard what we heard from space ghost and how much of it was responses to other questions that they just edited together. Sometimes you could just tell there is no way they just heard him ask something like why their new tv show is so bad and they just answered "Yes!" with a smile, it doesn't even make sense! Sealab 2021 was around that time and pretty funny too!

I suppose in my mind I'm not counting those adults because I've lost any hope of them producing anything of value for society! It's a moot point, I suppose. You know what I found out recently? The Sealab guys went on to do Frisky Dingo, and then the one of them is behind Archer (kinda felt like the one where they went to an actual sea lab was full of missed opportunities) now. Frisky Dingo... wasn't great, in my opinion. Tell me more! |

the one and only time i've attended an anime convention (in 2002, at the behest of my then-fiance, not to be confused with my current wife, who also wants me to take her to an anime convention, history repeats) the cast of Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast were there and i got to ask them a question, so i asked if there had ever been a guest who just completely didn't "get it" and walked out/canceled their appearance. i don't remember their answer so this post is pointless. i'm going to delete it instead of pushing the button ---------------- |

Plebian Parasite posted:whens the last time you saw the archer sealab episode or frisky dingo, because the sealab episode was full of references and frisky dingo was mostly pretty cool and good oh no I've been called out! I was honestly thinking later that I bet that there were references that were too subtle/I was too high to catch. I'll need to take a closer look. And I don't know. Honestly, I find Archer to really only be a B+ show in the first place (although admittedly it's only been getting better as it goes on, imo), so maybe some of those basic Archer-esque elements just didn't appeal to me when I would catch it during it's original run. Plus, it was the second or third age or so of Adult Swim originals and they generally put a bad taste in my mouth with poo poo like Squidbillies and 12oz Mouse. That's just me though. To that end, it IS a little hard for me to go back and watch Sealab. Harvey Birdman still rules though. Tell me more! |

there's running gags through all three shows actually. Archer and Frisky Dingo both use the cupcake in a briefcase and car key gags, when cyborg barry is first introduced he uses the same line from the first episode of sealab, some characters cross over from both shows into archer. My favorite one happens in the sealab episode when captain murphy gets crushed to death with the "bebop cola" vending machine.

Holy poo poo! I didn't know any of that! Thank you for making my world a more exciting place to be That has to be the #1 episode for fans. Every time I mention Sealab to someone they have to mention Murphy getting crushed by the cola machine and having to survive off of scorpion poison. Mine might have to be the one where he's looking for the pro shop that doesn't exist. Or the robots. Tell me more! |

I thought early Regular Show was pretty good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNHP5Z7RZcA Plus I hear new Samurai Jack was pretty great, and I still need to catch Craig McCracken's most recent work, Wonder Over Yonder.
