I still sometimes call the Rogers Centre the SkyDome to this day. Partly out of spite, partly because it sounds cooler, and partly because I hate change.

Seems to me like there's a disconnect between what Trotz and the players think of what happened. Trotz seemed to be more publicly optimistic and even made light of the struggles whereas some of the players were like gently caress this poo poo we need to get over the hump somehow and make changes.

Trotz not getting an extension and being basically a lame duck is pretty rare in the NHL too so he must really be on thin ice.

At some point maybe Caps management should consider the possibility that maybe the coach isn't the problem

I think it's fair to question Trotz's abilities as a coach especially in the playoffs. He's been terrible at adapting to the opposition's strategies and is often slow to make changes. He tried to play run and gun with the Leafs for 4 games, failed to recognize Orlov and Niskanen were his best pairing until the middle of the postseason, stubbornly left Ovechkin and Backstrom together for almost the entire season despite them not having chemistry any more, played 7D despite 2 of them (Orpik and Alzner) being garbage, healthy-scratched Nate Schmidt despite him being probably their third or fourth best D all season, failing to adapt to the Penguins' counter-attacking strategy until it was too late, etc.

Some local podcasts put it best when they said Trotz didn't seem like he even gameplanned for the Leafs or Penguins, but rather reacted to what they were doing after a few games had been played (going into 2-1 and 3-1 series deficits, respectively). He seems slow to adapt and unwilling to experiment and that's really bad when things don't go according to plan in the postseason. Sullivan, on the other hand, seemed prepared for the Capitals in the first 2 games and made great adjustments going into Game 7 and Trotz wasn't able to do anything in response.

His regular season record has been great but he's also had a fantastic roster, great injury luck, and opponents who can't specifically gameplan against the Capitals like they can in the playoffs.

Is there a better option out there? Maybe not, but I think Trotz's time should be up in DC.

That may well be fair. I'm taking a broader view and noting the Caps have changed coaches, what, 6 or 7 times in the Ovechkin era? And nothing has changed for a decade. So it doesn't seem likely to me that they just keep picking coaches that suck in the playoffs.

A lot of people believe the problem is that Ovechkin/their core can't get it done in the playoffs (and they subdivide into the "Ovechkin is too Russian to win" camp and the "a team that relies so heavily on its power play is bound to struggle in the playoffs" camp, though the Caps had the fewest goals allowed this year so I don't even know). I'm more inclined toward the camp that thinks it's just dumb lovely luck that maybe has gone on so long it's become a death spiral as the team's stars have come to expect everything to fall apart every May (and especially against the Penguins) and then lo and behold, it does.

Maybe Trotz should go, but it's hard to see who you can replace him with that's likely to do better

Fancystats breakdown on Couturier

quote:

So the only way for Couturier to meet the expectations of his doubters would be to play him extensively in situations where he has not thrived, and hope that something finally clicks for him. This creates a feedback loop, as fans watch him struggle in these minutes and stay convinced that Couturier can’t score, period. It boils down to a simple either/or: either learn to score on the power play, or continue to face criticism for underachieving offensively.

I’d recommend a third route. Remove Couturier from the power play entirely, and station him back atop the PK depth chart. Let him continue to thrive at 5v5, as he has done the past two years, and free him from the expectations that come along with power play minutes. Rather than lock him into a nominal 3C role, the Flyers would be best served giving him a few more minutes at even strength, befitting their most effective forward in the situation.

short version: Coots is spectacular on the PK and does great at 5v5. He really needs to be yanked from the PP because that's just not working. He's not a top line guy but that sure as hell doesn't mean he isn't useful.

Michel Therrien is available.

e: also Dan Bylsma, who may or may not have been born to coach the Washington Capitals

I don't know that there is a clearly better coaching candidate available for the Caps if they fired Trotz and I question whether any team in the Caps position should be firing a coach unless that's the case, whatever their frustrations.

He is and always has been a Jordan Staal-lite. That's a fine thing for a player to be but you certainly have to tamp your expectations of that sort of player accordingly.
If nothing else his contract is appropriate and he's likely got a long-rear end career in front of him because players of this ilk tend not to break apart/degrade as quickly.

The Caps were the better team in the 2nd round, I don't know that their history of losing should have people calling for yet another coach's head in this instance. It was a bad beat, but the odds of firing Trotz turning into another Adam-Oates-esque disaster seem higher than the odds of it being a cup-clinching move.

Goalies imploding when they play the Penguins is the just and due payback for the like 3 years across the late Bylsma and Johnston eras when the best goalie in the NHL was whoever happened to be playing the Penguins that particular night
