Dear diary, I got another erection today at work. SO embarrassing, but kinda hot. The CO asked me to fix up his dress uniform. I had stayed late at work to move his badges 1/8" to the left and pointed it out this morning. 1SG spanked me while the CO watched, once they caught it. Tomorrow I get to start all over again...
Maverick got passed over for F-18 transition and became the XO on a small deck amphibious ship, eventually getting courtmartialed for dancing with a female E-2 in a club in Bahrain.

35 years later and MAVERICK is an O-6 having never made the transition to general, and long since removed from any combat position, is manning a procurement office desk in the Pentagon.

Meanwhile ICEMAN (overweight with a ponytail and a Hawaiian shirt. I.e. Val Kilmer) is a Program Manager at Northrop Grumman

Together they join forces to break all the rules and bring the F14 Tomcat back with a stunning new modernization program.

Movie ends with Maverick and Iceman flying off into the sunset to bomb Muslims in their new jet black F14 Stealthcats. In an odd move Goose is Mavericks RIO although no character ever openly acknowledges his presence.

Can the hive mind help me put together an airplane nerd road trip?

Starting at Louisville, KY on 18/Aug and lasting 5-6 days. Must include the eclipse totality band on the 21st and WP Museum in Dayton at some point. Prefer to drop the hire-car off where I pick it up to save money. Max 5 hours driving per day, preferably split into 2 sessions (so I can drive somewhere, spend a day doing stuff, then drive somewhere else to sleep - otherwise it's drive half a day and spend only half a day doing stuff before it closes at 5pm).

Non-airplane stuff that's cool is cool too. The only other airplane thing I can think of is Marshall to see a Saturn V*, and maybe Pensacola, but it's a bit far away.

*Not American so can't see the rest of Redstone Arsenal

Also, that Japanese F-14 looks really impressive - not only did he mount ASM-2s instead of Sparrows, it looks like he cannibalized an F-2's nose and radome from another kit.

Honestly you can easily spend multiple days at the Air Force Museum if you want to be at all thorough and I don't think there's anything remotely comparable you can squeeze into your schedule. Trying to do it all in one day will be a blur of planes and you won't notice the "small stuff" between the dominant exhibits. I went three times in one year and found new stuff each time - for example, it wasn't until the third time that I paid attention to the big cylinder thing hanging out next to the B-36 at the time which is completely insane on its own. Pro-tip though - go on weekdays if at all possible. It's free admission, so locals who don't care about planes will show up on weekends just as something to do (although the distinction probably isn't as big now that school is out).

For touristy stuff in general, I dunno, include Chicago in your loop? The Field Museum is legit and Chicago-Louisville is right at the edge of your time limit.

Yeah, I've been to the AF Museum before the new extension and didn't make it to the old hanger 4 (so no valkyrie), so I have to go back and see the rest. I don't want that day to be more than 1 hr driving before getting there so I can be there at opening time :)

And good idea on making it a weekday. Last time was a weekday and I assumed it was always pretty quiet, but I have no intention to test that theory. That narrows Dayton down to 22nd or 23rd, which gives a bit more structure as to what I can possibly get to

On the subject of museums!

I'm planning to visit the Moscow area in late September and would like to get out to the Central Air Force Museum in Monino.

But I've been getting conflicting reports about whether it's still open. Some sources are saying it was closed early last year. Others are saying it's still open but may close soon.

Knowledgeable goons, is the Monino Musuem still open? And if so, when can it be visited?

I remembered another museum that will be vaguely close - the Indiana Military Museum. I haven't been there myself, but they have a few planes and tanks. The planes look like an overlap with Wright-Patterson (shocker), but they seem to have breathing room between them.

Just hit up Wright Patt and try and make it down to Huntsville to see a Saturn V and a space shuttle (template)

I think Louisville to Huntsville is out of range technically but 5 hours is still hilariously short in the US.

I do hope you already have a room for the eclipse. I think my dad is paying $400/night and booked it a year out.

Chicago is an option, but brutally expensive.

I'd strongly consider Detroit. The Henry Ford and Greenfield Villiage https://www.thehenryford.org/visit/henry-ford-museum/ is the best industrial museum in the world in my opinion. There is a fair amount of aviation, but there is a hell of a lot of everything else. Also only 4 hours up the way from Dayton. The Detroit Institute of Art is also worth the day. Plus, there is enough gentrified/hipsterified areas to have a nice beer in, and enough lovely post-industrial wasteland to get your fallout selfies in.

Stratolaunch mothership rollout. Will be the largest winged aircraft ever to fly, assuming it flies. Though I am completely baffled about the use cases for it. I get that when they started the project SpaceX was still blowing up Falcon 1's, and nobody was talking publicly about reusable rockets. But still. "Able to launch 3 pegasus XL's in one mission" That is great. There have been 6 Pegasus XL's flown in the last decade.
