I'm kind of amazed Julie Kavner is still doing the voice. Her regular speaking voice sounds very much like the other characters she voices, who all smoke. I'm pretty sure she smokes, too.

She was the only major VA who didn't appear when they did "Inside the Actor's Studio" with the Simpsons voice cast because she has a "secret process" for doing Marge's voice, which likely just means she has a killer smoker's voice.

Incidentally that episode of Inside the Actor's Studio was as painful to watch as any modern episode. It was literally James Corben and the audience making requests of the voice cast to re-enact popular scenes and howling like baboons because "Oh my god the good jokes are coming from people and not cartoons what a thrill" for like 2 straight hours. Lord knows how long they filmed in the studio.

That was also because it's written into her contract that she never has to do promotions for the show, and can't be photographed or filmed for it. She's an extremely private person.

The scare over him threatening to leave the show last year to focus on his independent comedy made me track some of it down and woof, novelty songs of him flatly singing about catholic priests molesting deaf choirboys is some dire poo poo.

Or they would pull a Maude Flanders and just kill off every character he voices. Just have some long painfully unfunny sequence of a bunch of beloved characters dying in horrendously unfunny ways. Or just have half of Springfield be a smoking crater and have none of the characters acknowledge it or the missing characters who don't show up anymore.

It turns out that Bart's Comet really did hit Springfield, and every episode since then was Homer in a coma for 23 years.

Then they retconned it to it being that he stabbed his brain with a crayon as a child and once removed he's a genius. Also Dr. Hibbert hadn't seen it because his thumb has been covering it up for decades and seems to be fine with it being loged back into his brain to restupify him.

Thing is, the Simpson gene is a great way to explain the lower and lower quality writing. They just have a horribly brain degenerative disorder that robs them of a fulfilling full life in a predictable and horrific way played for laughs.

it's an interesting point because I agree this is terrible but it's also got nothing to do with all the "pandering to millenials/contemporary culture" poo poo that is truly horrible and takes up most of this thread. like only baby boomers and a few odd gen x'rs would get the joke about Paint Your Wagon, I only know about it because my dad made me watch it once (it's really bad)

Lazy garbage clipshows were a problem with US shows in the 80s/90s in general, not the Simpsons in particular.

The 138th Episode special is probably the only clipshow of any program of that era that was good (if it even counts when most of the content was previously unseen or on the Tracy Ulman show).

Yeah, and that brings up an interesting point which is that old Simpsons used to be pretty good at making references to niche cultural things like that, all these weird scattershot "Dennis Miller ratio" in-jokes like the Paint Your Wagon parody, Rory Calhoun, or Mike Farrell's "My Core Beliefs" ("man, he really hates Wayne Rogers!"). By contrast, these days they're going out of their way to make wall-to-wall nods to contemporary popular trends. It's like they went from being content so snicker amongst themselves over occasional obscure throwbacks to desperately trying to shove in your face the fact that, "No, we're TOTALLY with it! Look, an Uber episode! Apple Computers! WE'RE STILL RELEVANT."

Every one in a while they go out of their way to make a joke about some less-than-mainstream internet or geek culture thing, but doesn't have the same flavor for some reason. I wonder if there actually is a difference or if I'm just old and bitter that my obscure throwback references aren't about the 70's anymore.

The Simpsons writers were self-aware of it. The first clip show where Bart puts the beer in the paint shaker was called "So It's Come to This".

Yeah, the lazy way new Simpsons names obvious parodies (Incredible Mulk, Mapple, Cosmic Wars) instead of just using the actual titles like they used to is something that irrationally irks me. We know what they're talking about, the lame substitutes just detract from any potential humor.

Hilariously enough, Fox execs wanted them to have at least one clip show per season before the showrunners shot them down.

Emphasis on at least, they figured "hey its animation so you can just put new voices over old footage. three or four entire episodes every year. no biggie. cartoons are easy!"

Like the Simpsons this thread will never die. There is always more and it is always worse.

It really says something about Futurama that there's really only one season that is generally bad, the one that came out after the DVD specials. Once that speed bump was crossed the show got good again, but most importantly, it actually ended. Even the original run's cancellation finale was great. The writers gave a poo poo which is more than can be said about the Simpsons.
