Baronjutter posted:

Yeah, doing like 120 on a 90 signed highway when there's no one around to crash into is fine. But doing 50 in a 30 zoned neighbourhood street in a city is absolutely deadly. It's way easier to give tickets to people speeding on the highway than neighbourhood streets though, so the cops enforce where the money is rather than where the safety issues are.

The biggest issue I've seen is in the "in-between" zones. Like in Calgary, coming out of Bowness on the Trans-Canada. Bowness is 50, and believe me, it loving needs to be 50. But then after the final traffic lights, it's 50 km/h for a little while before it goes up to 80 km/h. Lots of people hit 80 km/h right away, but it's not safe, because there's unprotected left turns across traffic and whatnot. Likewise, it's 80 km/h all the way out of town, until it goes up to 110 km/h. It would be mostly safe to do 110 km/h the whole way along, after the last set of lights in the city, except for the cases when it's not -- and you can't know if it is or not ahead of time.

What really shocks me is the people who will do well under the speed limit on an expressway, then over the limit on a residential road. Or the people who will go 90 km/h on a 100 km/h highway, and then just keep trucking at 90 km/h when the limit drops to 80 km/h.

I think one of the best choices I made was to simply stop speeding altogether instead of using "my judgement" as to whether it's safe or unsafe to do so in a particular place. It's just not worth the risk, and gently caress it, I fly planes now -- I don't want to get in the habit of casually disobeying rules and regulations, and if I feel the need for speed I can go burn avgas and smash bugs for an hour or two. I got lucky to never have an accident or a ticket, so I'm gonna step away from the table while I'm ahead.

A road built for 50 and one for 100 along the exact same corridor will be very different.

Big expressways and highways in particular, civil engineers usually recommend different speed limits for varying conditions and vehicles and whoever chooses the speed limit (provinces and municipalities) pretty consistently lowball it.

A guy had (has?) a topic about his traffic engineering career on A/T that talked about this a lot.

I've noticed similar things on the sea to sky. Lots of people drive 90 in the 100 zone, 90 in the 90, and maybe 80 in the 60 sections. I don't see why driving the limit is so hard for people.

Also if driving the speed limit on the S2S cuts an hour off your time I think maybe you should slow down. It only takes a little over an hour to get to west van.

So on a another topic, how much money is it going to cost to fix the Toronto islands and the Beaches? I live near Woodbine beach and its at least 80% underwater. While the weather has been poo poo lately, it won't stay that way, and a lot of people rely on summer crowds in both places for a lot of their yearly revenue (seriously, come to the beaches in winter and its a ghosttown). Civil engineers design the road for one speed, then politicians set the speed limit to some stupid lower speed. This creates situations where it feels ridiculous to actually obey the speed limit and hence why people tend to 'speed'. See: a shitload of BC highways.

A lot of people are trying to crunch numbers, but they're all dismissing the idea that spending will actually go up, because, I don't know, they think poors are going to put it all in a mattress? Also they're going "And the government will get more money in taxes!" Uh yea that's a good thing because then they have money to spent on things like infrastructure, healthcare, fire and police (always bring that up because these types are always pro police beating brown people) and education. I want to know what these people think the government does with its money, yes it does things like a big duck, but it also goes into services you use all the time. but then I realize they're thinking that poors who don't have jobs will be living high on the hog because of this new fund.

The economy in Ontario will begin to collapse January 1 2018. We will now have two classes. Lower class and upper class. The middle class with be gone. I feel sorry for the people working our current minimum wage jobs that simply do not understand economics. You will not have more money after the wage increase, you will not have 'breathing room', you will also not be further ahead than you are now.... It's a little thing called inflation. ( which will be hyperinflation in this case), which actually further weakens the dollar and costs us even more money.

For many people making 16-20 an hour, most will not see a wage increase. They will just become closer to lower class. Your $1.90 large double double will now cost $2.75-$3.00. Your big Mac combo that costs you $ 10 bucks now will be closer to $15. Your weekly groceries that cost you $150 will cost you $225.

Anything that is less costly right now, will cost the most after January 1st. The government likes to claim they are bringing everyone up to middle class but that's not true.... Actually it's simply impossible. Our economy was never structured for everyone to be able to live freely and debt free..

For people like myself whom have busted their asses to do well and earn more in life this is nothing more than a kick in the face. For those who spent 60k+ and dedicated years of thier life sitting in a classroom, all will the hopes of doing better in this life this is even a bigger kick in the face.

Here we have the liberal government hard at work. Rewarding people for nothing, removing the middle class, increasing the debt load and again.... Crashing the economy. Moving to the US has never looked this

Or maybe it's just that the middle class was an accidental creation of the economy's performance before and directly after World War II, the capitalist system was always only supposed to have two classes, and we've been spending 50 years trying to have our cake and eat it too rather than fix the system?
