Seriously: why exactly does Trump want want to pull out of this deal? What does he have to benefit by doing this?

Why does he care about keeping his promise to dumbshit coal country (who already votes Republican)? He doesn't give a poo poo about keeping promises unless it personally benefits him and I'm not sure how pulling out from this agreement benefits him in any financial way.

Is it really as simple as wanting to undo everything Obama did out of spite?

Oh, well, that's all water under the bridge, as I always say. Water under the bridge!

Man, I know it's like a "no poo poo" thing at this point, but every now and then I just find myself shocked at the sheer amount of disillusionment I feel about my country now. I know a lot of the issues that we're seeing presented under Trump are not new issues, but having our gross, flabby underbelly laid so proudly and brazenly bare is deeply depressing.

But also like, his base doesn't know that or care. He's painting an incredibly rosy picture of the US which he attributes to himself. Until his base sees that the speeches are lies (which I don't assume is going to happen anytime soon), for all they know, the U.S is headed in the right path and today marks a symbolic stab against the treehuggers.

It's a non binding agreement so no. It's basically 194 countries agreeing to each find their own way to improve their carbon emissions. There is no enforcement mechanism, it is just every country agreeing that climate change is real and to do something. Leaving it is an announcement that you intend to emit more carbon, because reducing carbon in ANYs way is compliance.

Even if you fail to reduce carbon emissions, you are OK in the agreement because all they ask you to do is explain why and promise to do better later down the road. Its a hilariously weak agreement.

Trump legit believes its a bad deal that harms America because he believes Bannon's lies and because he is incredibly stupid.

Place your bets
I mean building new wind power is already cheaper than building new coal power. As soon as the cost to generate power from wind drops below the cost to generate coal, the coal market is going to drop out within a decade to zero. Who benefits? The companies and countries that adopted first.

Basically the USA is in the process of another economic self own.
