Oh my god I'm dying laughing over here. I'm listening to the speech in a background tab and you can tell exactly when he's reading off the paper and then his commentary on his own speech during said speech. He'll start out deliberately, somewhat presidentia, with an even tonel quote:Thus, our withdrawal from the agreement represents a reassertion of america's sovereignty. our constitution is unique among those in the world, and is my obligation and my highest honor to protect it and then suddenly, his voice goes up a little, and you can almost hear the little smug smile complete with head waggle quote:And I will. He just can't resist throwing a little flavor in there.

Trump is well past Bush in destroying Americas influence. You're an idiot though and evil weasel had said all that needs to be said. Trump withdrew from NATO? Or did he not say the magic words? Trump is a giant tone-deaf moron who didn't realize that the world is anxious about the USA's commitment to NATO and that he really should give an explicit commitment to article 5. But on the other hand, the US military is still extremely active in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean and recently deployed another division to Poland. This is probably Mattis at work. There are also still Americans in the Baltics both training locals and functioning as a tripwire for the Russians. Any attempt by Russians to invade will require them to kill Americans, Article 5 or no Article 5, and this is intentional. Actions over words.

I want to jump back to The home defense/gun talk. I have a best friend who owns guns because of self defense and fun. Fun I understand, but the self defense makes me sad. I'm a former bouncer and have been doing martial arts for 20 years. In a home invasion scenario, I'm far more likely to beat them off with a baseball bat, than he is with his AR. If it was somebody with my level of training vs my buddy who likes to go the range, I would take the somebody with the training and no weapon over my buddy any day of the week. That's not a tough guy statement, it's a training statement. People who go to the range think it makes them a badass. It doesn't. And unless you've actually been in a life or death situation, you don't know how well you'll do. As for the fantasy about opposing the government if they become (more of) a police state.... that's laughable. They have drones and the psychopath warriors (special forces) working for them.

While this is 90% spite, I think about 10% is because Trump is a dumbfuck who still thinks he's actually a real business genius and can get an AMAZING DEAL as if he even knew what the gently caress he was bargaining for. Also Paul Ryan is scum and I hope that he's somehow involved in this Russian thing enough that he ends up in a jail cell.

DoctorGonzo posted:Not anymore. This isn't going to do a loving thing for it. Coal is still prohibitively expensive as an energy source, and reducing the costs of "regulations" isn't going to make it cheap enough to outpace other options. It's like trying to eliminate OSHA requirements to save the Horse and Carriage industry.

I didn't want to derail with house chat, but I think the original article was pretty relevant. The point of the Time article is that the Kushner family made their money in suburban real estate, single family homes, more utilitarian stuff, and that they weren't slapping their name all over casinos and office towers. That Jared Kushner was moving to a different world when he married into the Trump family and started buying Manhattan real estate, and that his upbringing, while he was wealthy, was much less ostentatious than the Trump world. (Just about everything is.) And that this kind of tied into people's expectations, since defeated, that Kushner would be the moderating or "realistic" force in the Trump administration. Of course, from the article, we can't tell that. Describing a 2 million dollar, 7 bedroom home as middle class is a bit of a stretch, but its hard to say. Both of these houses have seven bedrooms: The first one is a McMansion that wouldn't look out of place in a suburban neighborhood. The second is in a gated community in LA and has its own swimming pool and tennis court. I am guessing the point of the article is that Jared Kushner was raised in something that looks more like the first than the second.

Perhaps the silver lining here is that Trump negotiates a new deal that's actually way worse for America, in concert with his previous efforts.
