So I've been thinking about the law that was just passed in the California senate that requires candidates to release 5 years of tax returns to be on the ballot. Upon first reading about it, I was excited because it should mean that we'll never have another situation like the one we've had with Trump.

But in reality, it doesn't actually matter, and is yet another rule that only Democrats will bother following. A Republican presidential candidate could absolutely decline to release his returns, not bother being on the ballot, lose the national popular vote by 15 million votes, and still end up winning the election.

Hell, I'd posit that they could even brag about not running in California and their base would go loving gaga over it.

Not really. The Danish right wing advocates and implements policies that would be super-popular with the Republican base: generous welfare benefits for the white masses, while immigrant minority groups ("immigrant" being an inheritable trait for several generations in Scandinavia) get basically no help from the state, though they do get the blame for all of society's ills.

And even so, they're getting ready to shoot themselves in the face because the immigrant/minority population is growing from like 7% to 9%, and it's getting harder and harder to keep them off the public benefits that the homegrown white Danes get, especially with that pesky European Union constantly telling them that they're in violation of EU law.

That's being a bit sweeping, you can't really control if the power your using is coming from a coal plant or solar/hydro on the other end unless you take your house off the grid, you can be conscious about recycling more or buying cleaner products but my question is what causes people to be straight up vindictive towards recycling and the environment like this guy as a example.

Not having the presidential candidate on the ballot to motivate their voters would absolutely destroy the California GOP. California still sends 14 GOP representatives to congress.

These people look out the window and say "Welp, the environment seems fine to me, why should I have to change anything I'm doing?"

It's the exact equivalent of racial/sexual privilege. It's a narrative that tells people they're doing everything just right already and don't have to change or sacrifice anything, and anyone who says otherwise is trying to get their greedy little fingers into your pocket (or take away your fun).

This is a fair point.

If it's a reasonable GOP candidate (lol), that would probably be enough to ensure that they run in California.

This is stupid and completely misses the spirit of the question.

There's a difference between ordinary consumption and deliberate over consumption and waste.

One is driving a 2005 Civic that only gets 28 miles to the gallon. The other is rolling coal and dumping motor oil into the street drains.

This is true. It's the standard Republican mindset. I've met people who said they'd by a gas guzzler and run it around in circles just to annoy Al Gore after An Inconvenient Truth came out. They don't care about right or wrong. They just want to piss off liberals. The mindset of a child.

Trump is treating the Presidency like a business just like he said. He sees it as taking over a rival's business. And he's destroying everything his rival did to make the business successful as a power play and just to spite him. He doesn't care if its good or bad he just wants to destroy his business rival utterly. It's been Trump's game plan for years.

If using up some resources is the means to some other end (like say entertainment), the motivation there is obvious and understandable.

There's no clear motivation for someone to have a goal to use up resources purely for the sake of wasting resources, that's deeply irrational.

These aren't the same things at all.

Donald J. Trump is listed as an eco-villan on the Captain Planet wiki page now apparently:

quote:

The Eco-Villains are a small group of antagonists who cause danger to the planet by committing pollution, deforestation, and poaching. They enjoy the destruction they cause to the planet and the harm they bring upon anyone by any means to obtain wealth, land, or power. Due to conflict among them from their varying self-serving interests and backgrounds, they tend to work alone most of the time, although episodes do show the villains enter into temporary alliances when it suits their plans. Only in one two-part episode did the entire ensemble of Eco-Villains work as a team, with Zarm as the leader. Each of these villains represents a specific ecological disaster. These include:

Loving chairs more every day!

My father is a weirdo ultra Republican who (I assume, since I've been estranged from some time) spends his days posting on conservative news groups about the evils of immigrants and non-Christians and Democrats.

Growing up, my first exposure to environmentalism was obviously in school, followed closely by learning that Rachel Carson was a slut whore who wanted to destroy our farming communities with her hateful lies -- all I'd done was share what I'd learned in my third grade science assignment. To be honest, it took me a long time before I realized that Rachel Carson isn't controversial at all.

This was back in the 90s, and I'm pretty sure his opinions had existed within him for some time prior to that. I don't get it. For me, my exposure to the bad opinions of far right conservatives towards environmentalists/conservationists also included a weird amount of misogyny (seriously, any woman associated with it was a slut or whore or lesbian, a feminazi, etc).

I'm glad I didn't end up with his political leanings. Gross gross gross.

Being against immigration has nothing to do with the left/right axis. Those danish you are speaking about who are in favor of generous welfare benifits are socialists. Just like hitler wasnt extreme right he was extreme left. Not that being against immigration is immoral but im illustrating a point.

plus isn't the fact that the Scandinavians aren't basically getting a helluva economic boost because immigration is making up for the lower birth rates they had for decades? (or at least I remember vaguely something from developmental econ studies)
