Return of Mido

One of the level authors contacted me and told me that the music used was actually a custom track composed by one of SMWCentral's members. It's called "Dark Days", by imamelia.

They also agreed that the secret exit was a little poorly designed after seeing other people's reactions to the level as a whole. I reiterated that I don't think the level is bad as presented but the secret exit had the unfortunate effect of dragging down the whole experience.

Something I found kind of baffling was having two paths that both go to the same goal, with neither being an explicit shortcut or bonus area. As far as I can recall, that only happens in one level in the original game, and that's the Chocolate Island one where having multiple paths is the entire gimmick.

The Eris LP will be back in...a bit. I'm a bit distracted by trying to upgrade my computer's GPU to something that's less than 8 years old. Unfortunately my first purchase was only able to communicate with the DVI port without crashing.

I may end up transferring the master encode and my scripts to my laptop so I can continue working on it while my desktop is Frankensteined on.

IIRC in the randomizer source code, if a enemy's stats are randomized such that it has 65535 HP (Like Doom Gaze here), than it may or may not start with the Life 3 effect to increase its health.

Most of the endgame Kefka's Tower bosses in the seed I've beaten have the Life 3 status.

I was doing a big write up, then I realised I was basically writing a 1k+ word essay on new romhacking methods. Bleh.

Quick summary of that - We have new tools and new processes that mean we don't have to wrestle with lovely old tools like FEditor. Instead, we can now basically compile the rom from cmd, by giving the make hack.cmd a copy of a vanilla GBAFE rom and a giant list of changes.

New buildfile method is real nice, we can easily revert to old copies by removing changes from the giant list and running the script again. It means we don't have invisible patches or poor tools messing with things they really shouldn't be.

If you're curious about the new buildfile method, check this out.

Because of this new method, it's very easy to integrate new ASM into your project. And the big thing I wanted to talk about is one of those hacks.

:siren:FE8 Skill System:siren:

Here's where you can get it.

Now then, I'll copy some stuff over from that link.

quote:

6 skills are supported, 1 personal, 1 class, and up to 4 learned.
The class skill is only for while you are in that class, so a Thief promoting to Assassin will lose Steal.
Learned skills are gained through level up while in a certain class, e.g.
CavalierSkillList:
BYTE 10 SaviorID //learn savior at lv10
BYTE 20 CantoPlusID //learn canto+ at lv20
BYTE 00 00 //end list
Only units up to character 0x4F can save their learned skills, anyone else (generics) is automatically given any level up skills they should have learned in their current class as well as the personal and class skills.

Basically, this is a Awakening/Fates style skill system implemented in FE8. For a game that only had class skills, this is an enormous change.

You can give each character a personal skill, you give each class a class skill and you allow characters to learn up to 4 skills from their classes.

There's a lot of stuff in the skill system so far including:
  • Faires
  • Breakers
  • Rallies
  • Heroes-style Spurs
  • Seals
  • Some Fates personals

There's a lot more, I suggest taking a look at the list. There's more coming, I see some people working on Heroes-style procs with the countdown.

This skill system is completely open and with the new methods, it's very easy to include this in a new FE8 project.

Here's another gif, but this one's too big for lpix.

Second half of the second level feels rushed. Lack of general level cohesion has been a flaw in quite a few of the levels in Spooky World so far. Too many ideas, not enough development. (Just noticed that apparently the 2nd level got 34th...huh.)

That third level though.... nice.

Come to think, Mario games in general don't have much in the way of sewer levels, do they? There was one in SMRPG, I guess, and of course there's pipes all over the place, but not much that you could look at and say "yep, that's a sewer level."

I guess Nintendo is smarter than your average game developer. :v:

Yoshi's Island had a handful, with a lot of claustrophobic tunnels and running water, but Yoshi's Island also isn't really a typical Mario game. Also, they weren't common in the game if I remember right.

Hey, remember this thing? I sure don't! It turns out that having access to the other 80% of your games library that only runs on Windows (when you normally run OSX) is super-distracting. Also, nuDOOM is a great game. But it's not Super Metroid: Eris, which is why we're here!

Part 4: Quantum Thermodynamics

The bots guarding the powerbombs respawn if you kill them, and have ludicrous amounts of health, which is why I skippedface-tanked through them. As for Evasion, in the 2007 version of the hack, you got it quite early -- before Spore Spawn and Botwoon, in fact. You then had to use it skillfully in those fights, because the safe spot in Spore Spawn didn't exist, and there were one or two more platforms to get in the way in the Botwoon fight. I'm not sure if the later Evasion + less malignant boss arenas of the remake hack are actually better or not, but figuring that out would require replaying the original hack, and I don't really feel like doing that just to make one comparison.

Ninja Pirates have always been easy if you know the trick.

Evasion might just be a gimped Screw Attack but back in 2009 it was freaking awesome to have a hack release with a "new" item in it. Hell, even today new upgrades are few and far between. Yeah, as a player Evasion is great and fits in well with the other mobility improvements in the hack (being able to respin mid-jump, and retaining runspeed when you land). And let's face it, OG Screw Attack was overpowered.

What Samus says is not always what I personally feel about the hack. :v:

Beach is definitely the best so far. Swiss Hotel and Hostel 3 were both hilarious for very different reasons, and levels like Nightswimming were cute. The Casino one looked pretty spectacular if nothing else.

Abstract had some cool levels but also some absolute nightmares. The weird vaporwave world map was cool, as was the ghost one.
