I haven't been paying much attention to this election but it appears that Corbyn wants to renationalise utilities and natural monopolies like power and rail and give government support to worker co-operatives. Dunno about the state planning stuff because that more or less died on the left with the Soviet Union.

Sadly no; he wants to get rid of some of our anti-trade union laws and have a state investment bank lending billions for infrastructure.

Oh true he does want to nationalise a few things and potentially encourage co-op ownership, I guess that's sort of socialisty in a very social democracy way.

As far as what he's actually committed to in the manifesto, he wants to nationalise certain industries (namely mail, energy and rail) and empower labour by e.g. repealing the trade union act.

He's to the left of European mainstream social democrats in the sense that nationalisation isn't really on the agenda for parties on the continent these days, but then few countries have gone through such extensive privatisation as the UK to begin with.

As far as personal beliefs go, there's little reason to doubt that he and McDonnell are genuine socialists.

Much less, the UK has huge economic power in terms of size and freedom of the mint compared to Syriza.

also most of his being hosed over comes from his own party claiming he can't win an election and they'll be hosed if he actually does because the election after will see lots of deselections for MPs who didn't get behind him

They did, and most likely large sections of the left that I don't know about still do, but the thing is if you do lovely things you should stop saying "well that's worse!" Because it isn't an argument, its an excuse.

What is the difference between things like the Contras and their funding and "real monsters"? Because if there is one it is hard to envision. Or blowing up weddings, even if it is "by accident". The fact is that even if you are doing it for good reasons then the people are still just as dead and would probably prefer not to be.

Okay I needed to change some stuff around, because I was rabbiting too much. But what does "finance" do? What is its purpose, how does it make the UK richer of safer?

Bad things happen in war. It's sad but there's not a lot anyone can do about it. The munitions we use for UAV airstrikes are just about as precise as munitions can be, the only alternatives are less precise and more destructive, with more potential loss of noncombatant life.

We aren't going to let our terrorist enemies plot and prepare to attack us an our allies in peace, it's not going to happen and it shouldn't happen.

The purpose of finance is to make money, one of the ways it makes money is by capitalizing businesses which can be good in a lot of ways.

A strong financial sector makes a lot of money, some of which is paid to the state as taxes, some of which is spent by financiers themselves at other businesses.

Having important banks operate from your country gives you soft power like sanctions and financial control over other countries. One of the ways we've been able to punish russia for its misbehavior in Ukraine is financial.

Corbyn wouldn't have anything like the external threat that Tsipras did, but it's a pretty safe bet that a good chunk of his party, the civil service, and the intelligence services would set out to frustrate his agenda.

I posed that question in the hope that he wasn't a true socialist and NBC was redscaring a little. And I still don't believe nationalizing natural monopolies that would have been already if not for insane privatization makes you a proponent of a "state-planned economy."

The manifesto contains policies that are agreed upon by the leadership and various organs of the party, and have a somewhat viable chance of being implemented over the course of a government. It's not Corbyn's blueprint for an ideal society, and there are a lot of things he's a proponent of that didn't make the cut.
