NBC news is saying Corbyn wants a state-planned economy and labor-controlled industry (i.e. he's a genuine socialist). Is that true?

Jeb! Repetition posted:NBC news is saying Corbyn wants a state-planned economy and labor-controlled industry (i.e. he's a genuine socialist). Is that true? Sadly no; he wants to get rid of some of our anti-trade union laws and have a state investment bank lending billions for infrastructure. Oh true he does want to nationalise a few things and potentially encourage co-op ownership, I guess that's sort of socialisty in a very social democracy way.

Jeb! Repetition posted:NBC news is saying Corbyn wants a state-planned economy and labor-controlled industry (i.e. he's a genuine socialist). Is that true? As far as what he's actually committed to in the manifesto, he wants to nationalise certain industries (namely mail, energy and rail) and empower labour by e.g. repealing the trade union act. He's to the left of European mainstream social democrats in the sense that nationalisation isn't really on the agenda for parties on the continent these days, but then few countries have gone through such extensive privatisation as the UK to begin with. As far as personal beliefs go, there's little reason to doubt that he and McDonnell are genuine socialists.

nationalisation isn't on the agenda because the EU doesn't like it

also most of his being hosed over comes from his own party claiming he can't win an election and they'll be hosed if he actually does because the election after will see lots of deselections for MPs who didn't get behind him

The munitions we use for UAV airstrikes are just about as precise as munitions can be, the only alternatives are less precise and more destructive, with more potential loss of noncombatant life. We aren't going to let our terrorist enemies plot and prepare to attack us an our allies in peace, it's not going to happen and it shouldn't happen. The purpose of finance is to make money, one of the ways it makes money is by capitalizing businesses which can be good in a lot of ways. A strong financial sector makes a lot of money, some of which is paid to the state as taxes, some of which is spent by financiers themselves at other businesses. Having important banks operate from your country gives you soft power like sanctions and financial control over other countries. One of the ways we've been able to punish russia for its misbehavior in Ukraine is financial.

The manifesto contains policies that are agreed upon by the leadership and various organs of the party, and have a somewhat viable chance of being implemented over the course of a government. It's not Corbyn's blueprint for an ideal society, and there are a lot of things he's a proponent of that didn't make the cut.
