The government of Qatar is one of the few actual diplomatic back channels that we have to the Taliban and Sunni extremists operating in the Gulf. On a more personal note, a lot of the volunteer work that I do is in trying to get vaccinations to kids who live in war-torn areas and the Qataris have been instrumental in getting polio vaccines to kids in Taliban and warlord-held areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
