it is easy for people to explain away problems by claiming every person that is talking about them is racist and a loser. this is a pretty common tactic with all kinds of things, it is much easier to do this than it is for people to fundamentally re-adjust their belief systems, especially if it has to do with identity, and especially if they don't have any actual experience with the thing.

i'm one of the most positive people i know about living and working in china and i can't even talk about china on places like Facebook or twitter or news articles because if i say one, just one, negative thing i am quickly a racist who just hates all chinese people

LOL. If some dude was trying to tell me IRL how he's never been to China but that there's so much "false information" about China and it has a "deep and mostly kind culture," I would slowly look him up and down until he was nervous, and then let out of the most core-shaking teethsuck and TSK he will ever have the misfortune of being a victim of.

Of all things to bring about this sagely advice, you chose a dumbass freshmen's reddit comment?

The opposite phenom to what you're describing is pretty insidious too, where people go out and deliberately look for lovely arguments to massage their own opinions. Who do you think is commenting on the average news article besides your brain-dead cousin and methhead larry? smh

i was just making a comment in general, i don't know anything about this reddit user and didn't really assume anything at all, other than the fact that they don't seem to know much about mainland china. this type of thing happens when it comes to politics, it happens when it comes to religion, it happens across the board with everything. "all trump supporters are racist hicks!" "all clinton supporters are liberal uppity hateful people", etc etc. there's no nuance involved. none. people would rather attack the messenger than look into real life experiences from people who have a different view than they do. are some trump supporters racist morons? absolutely. are some clinton supporters liberal uppity hateful people? probably.

you're correct that people go looking for lovely arguments to massage their own opinions. i don't disagree with you. i know that happens. i'm just saying that reverting to ad hominem attacks the second someone says something that goes against a belief you have isn't very helpful.

There's a Gong Cha I walk by that makes me smile every time. For those that are not in China, Gong Cha is an international franchise/chain of tea shops that are ubiquitous in Shenzhen, and probably also in many popular areas of Chinese megacities. They sell bubble teas and other frappe-esque sweet tea drinks that tend to cost higher than Chinese-based chain brands (which are often better tasting and with much more variety, IMO).
Anyway, there are 5 of them within about 500m of my apartment, but the one I walk by on the way to the metro station on the next street plays music on an outdoor speaker from open to close. Since there are no rules about doing this in China, and is one of my most loathed features of where I live, I usually avoid shops that do it out of spite since I am subjected to looped advertisements in my apartment until about 11pm every night.

This one is special, though. Since it opened right after Spring Festival, it plays nothing but top US Country music hits. If I opened a list of Country Music Television's most-played songs, I would probably find a majority of these songs being blasted publicly from this tea shop. I heard Toby Keith's "Trailerhood" playing the last time I passed by, and every time I walk by the place I get a smile at the silliness of Chinese people in the shop, street, and apartment above being forced to listen to "cousin fucker" music all day, singing about loving America and Ford trucks and getting drunk after break ups. I was walking with Chaoshan Girl one evening and Florida-Georgia Line's "Round Here" was blaring (one of my most hated songs when I first heard it) and she was asking why I was talking "in that accent" for the next few minutes after passing by the Gong Cha.

Tks but no tks. I got 2 months left here until I fly out to Armpitistan, and will probably visit HK one more time for the airport and flight out. There may be zero visits in the future, no matter the money offered. My boss wanted to give me a new company and one of her houses and let me be my own sorta manager-boss-man with my own personally-hired employees, and I told her I would rather live like a king for $400 a month in an Indian Tier-2 city than do that, so I am.

http://www.hormones.gr/8449/article/cigarette-smoking-has-a-positive-and%E2%80%A6.html

Cigarette smoking has a positive and independent effect on testosterone levels

quote:

In conclusion, our study reports that smoking is a positive and independent predictor of TT and FT levels. However, TT and FT levels appear negatively correlated with the dose of tobacco exposure among smokers. Smoking can lead to an acute increase in testosterone levels, but this can decrease with chronic exposure to tobacco by long-term smoking. Therefore, the effects of smoking on testosterone levels depend on personal smoking history.

Basically, the paper says smorking increases your testosterone levels and makes you more manly, but only if you smoke sometimes.
