Last week, ahead of WWDC, there was a ripple of news when Axios discovered that Bozoma Saint John — one of the more noticeable execs at the company for being a woman of color, who led an Apple Music demo at the previous year’s WWDC to some acclaim — was leaving Apple. Now TechCrunch has learned where she’s landing: she’s going to Uber.

quote:

A legal group has asked Donald Trump to unblock users who have offended him on Twitter, saying that the blocks violate the First Amendment. In a letter, the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University argued that Trump’s Twitter account was a public forum, and banning users from viewing or engaging with his tweets suppresses free speech. “The President must not be allowed to banish views from public discourse simply because he finds them objectionable,” writes Knight Institute executive director Jameel Jaffer. “Having opened this forum to all comers, the President can’t exclude people from it merely because he dislikes what they’re saying.”

The Knight Institute letter cites the cases of Holly O’Reilly and Joseph M. Papp, two Twitter users who were blocked from Trump’s @RealDonaldTrump account after mocking or criticizing the president. They’re far from the only people who have provoked the same reaction — others can be found in the #BlockedByTrump hashtag. Blocked users can’t see Trump’s tweets or reply to them while logged in, which the letter says “suppresses speech in a number of ways.” They compare the Twitter account to city council meeting or other public forum. “It is easy to understand why you and your advisers might have found our clients’ posts to be disagreeable. Even if the posts were scornful and acerbic, however, they were protected by the First Amendment.”

way back when i was still managing stuff for a rent-a-cop shop a site officer had an "unofficial" policy to terminate any women that looked like they put on weight because he figured he could run an extra employee if we didn't have anyone on preventative maternity leave (~1 employee was on maternity or paternity leave at all time on average for a staff of 45ish)

it was fine (for him) for a while until he tried to literally measure people and he got sacked fairly quick

yes he was dumb enough to roll that out as a health thing but entirely leaving the men out

TELL ME AGAIN HOW GREAT BRITAIN WOULD BE IF IT WAS RULED BY THE MERCILESS JACKBOOT OF PRINCE CHARLES

YES I DO TALK TO PLANTS ACTUALLY
this is more fintech bubble, but it's also really good:

quote:

The existing system of private property interferes with allocative efficiency by giving owners the power to hold out for excessive prices. We propose a remedy in the form of a tax on property, based on the value self-assessed by its owner at intervals, along with a requirement that the owner sell the property to any third party willing to pay a price equal to the self-assessed value.

The tax rate would reflect a tradeoff between gains from allocative efficiency and losses to investment efficiency, and would increase in line with expected developments in information technology.

http://www.law.nyu.edu/sites/default/files/upload_documents/Property%20Monopoly.pdf

short version: you value your stuff yourself, and you a) have to pay tax based on that value and b) have to sell at that value if anyone else asks.

the paper itself talks about using the system for everything, which is dumb as poo poo, but for valuable intangibles like pharma patients it seems like a great idea

This actually seems like a great idea. It would teach beancounters to stop being such cheap dicks imo, and would cause companies that don't learn that to collapse hilariously.
