KoRMaK posted:oh gently caress, is that how they figured it out? like how eve online spies got busted?? It was worse than that. The Intercept went out of their way to blow the source. The Intercept was kind enough to give the "U.S. Government Agency" scans or pictures of the original documents and of a high enough quality that they could determine the report was printed. Reality Winner had dreadful tradecraft, but she probably would be free if the Intercept had not been so diligent about contacting the US Government and so helpful too!

So, was the Intercept just grossly incompetent and careless beyond measure or did Deus Ex yet again predict the future?

This is a great, extremely interesting and pretty depressing resource: Researchers of the Free University in Berlin have put together detailed biographies of all fatalities connected in any way with the Inner German border (i.e. the FRG-GDR border areas outside of Berlin). It's only available in German, though. Nadine Klinkerfuß (1951-1979). Tried to cross the CSSR-Austrian border in 1978 while pregnant along with her husband and her three children under the assumption that it wasn't as heavily guarded as the inner German border. The family was apprehended by Czechoslovakian border troops; Nadine's husband was then jailed in the GDR, while his wife was allowed to remain free. After giving birth to her fourth child and the Stasi then threatening to take her children away, she gave in to despair and committed suicide. Manfred Alte (1940-1963). Alte was an NCO within the East German border troops stationed in Eisfeld, Thuringia. During the early hours of April 17th, 1963, he got the order to repair parts of the border wire damaged during a storm the day ago. Together with Privates Helmut Fittkau (born 1941) and Siegfried Tilscher (born 1943) he set on to do the repairs. Alte was rumoured by his comrades to be a secret Stasi informant (which later turned out to be true) - was this the reason why he was able to bring a crate of beer along that day? Somewhere around midday - 22 bottles had already been emptied by the three - Alte took his his gun, killed Fittkau and Tilscher and then himself. The reasons for this murder-suicide remain unknown to this day. Benito Corghi (1938-1976). A native of Rubiera in northern Italy, Corghi worked as a truck driver and was also a member of the Italian Communist Party. During the night from August 4th-5th, 1976, Corghi was driving his empty truck back from Berlin towards Italy and passed the inner German border at Hirschfeld, Thuringia. After having concluded the customs formalities, Corghi realised that he had forgotten part of his papers with the GDR border office and went back on foot to retrieve them. Due to the darkness and the thick mist, the border troops didn't recognise him and ordered him to get his hands up; when Corghi instead turned around and fled (it's unclear if he really did this or if the bad visibility did simply trick the soldiers), they opened fire. Corghi succumbed shortly afterwards to his injuries. His death was the only one out of hundreds where the GDR issued a formal apology. Harry Krause (1940-1951). Harry was the youngest of four children; his family had fled from their native West Prussia to Mecklenburg during the late stages of World War 2. The Krauses' new home, the village of Groß-Thurow, had been transferred from the British to the Soviet zone in 1945 and was located in immediate vicinity to the inner German border. Next to the village and right on the border was the Goldensee lake, on which the children from the nearby villages both east and west of the border often went ice-skating during winter. On January 31st, 1951, Harry went skating on the Goldensee. At around 3 pm, 18 years old border trooper Otto R. saw him near the western shore of the lake and mistook him for a young adult trying to cross over. R. then fired off what he thought to be a mere warning shot and then marched on, believing that Harry stumbling and falling down was simply due to him being startled by the shot. Instead the bullet had hit the ten years old boy in the heart. West German civilians tried to save him, but it was already too late. After refusing hush-money by the state, Harry's family was forced to move out of Groß Thurow. Otto R. went to trial after reunification in 1995 but was found innocent, as the court couldn't find any evidence of premeditation. Barbara Schütz (1955-1973). Barbara was working as an apprentice in a precision optics plant, but was unhappy with her job. Two months before her death, in October, her boyfriend Eckbert W. had managed to swim across the Elbe river into West Germany. Schütz tried to follow him the same way. In the night of December 8th, 1973, she managed to avoid all border troops and tried to swim across the river, but drowned instead for unknown reasons. Four days later, her body was found by West German river police.
