But spaceflight and procedurally generated planets were causing some problems. “They were creating planets and they were able to drive around it, and the mechanics of it were there,” said a person who worked on the game. “I think what they were struggling with was that it was never fun. They were never able to do it in a way that’s compelling, where like, ‘OK, now imagine doing this a hundred more times or a thousand more times.’” procedurallygenerated.txt

*Is a Bioware guy* Hmm... a space game you say? Great! I got some real ideas about space. Get this, there are BABES in space. And they love the player a lot, always, no matter what the player has done. Just great babes we're talking about here, the best. We'll throw in some daddy issues for flavor. Now let me tell you about the gruff warrior man who respect you grudgingly ear... What's that? You want some ideas about space exploration??? Why would anyone want to explore space!? There's nothing to see but procgen rocks! *Throws up hands in frustration*

In the world of AAA game reviews scores in the 80-85 range aren't glowing they're middling. They probably did get negative mock reviews back, but they were looking at the average as a predictor for the metacritic rating. The 70 they ended up was considered an abysmal failure lol
|
# ? Jun 7, 2017 18:31 |
|
Game review scores are so inflated that metacritic shifts its criteria to "mixed" when a game falls below 75 in the aggregate. A big-budget AAA release posting below an 80 is disastrous.

I dunno why but I'm reminded of how Nintendo kept getting feedback that codename steam being so slow was frustrating, that they should speed up the enemy turns, and despite being told this multiple times they still didn't do anything about it until after release when the main reviews came in saying the same thing that people had been telling them before hand. Man I wish codename steam was actually a good game instead of just a middling "eh" game. I love the concept and idea behind it but that whole game just seems like a series of missed opportunities.

That whole thing was so weird. They showed it behind closed doors at E3 and let people tweet about it like it was some kind of deep secret and it turned out that the secret was "This isn't very good."

The art direction in Battleborn is terrible. There's no visual consistency among the characters and the UI looks like three HUDs vomited onto the screen at once.

They say in the article all the ones they got for Andromeda were glowing which is odd there wasn't a single detractor, unless they all made their reviews under the perception that any glaring problems/bugs/flaws would be fixed in the final version still in development. It can depend on whether the reviews are done internally or commissioned with an independent company, such as EEDAR. Internal reviews are at risk of looking at the game within a bubble and may not be able get a good idea of the media reception of the game. Or they might feel pressure to force the game out if the project has already gone behind schedule and the developer is at risk. It's good to have an internal team look at your game but most big publishers hire external companies. They're often staffed by ex-games media reviewers and are better at finding out the game's place in the market.
