Sooo did you guys play Sonic Time Twisted? It1s pretty much Sonic Mania before Sonic Mania.

There's a time travel mechanic that actually MAKES SENSE, as in there are only two time periods, they are radically different, and you travel instantly through the signs.
There's 14 emeralds to get, the special stages are probably the best ever, and you can retry them as long as you have lives left, which is HUGE.

And the level design is more like 2/3&K than CD, so it's actually good! Plenty to explore.
Best of all, the physics are pretty faithful! Not perfect, but only a die-hard Sonic fan would notice any differences.

It's funny you mention that, because I've been to playing Time Twisted and getting kinda pissed at some of the design. Like the ice level with random teleporters. Those have no business in a Sonic game.

The art design and music is spectacular but the bosses are awful and the level design isn't much better. So maybe it IS the true sequel to Sonic CD lol

That said, I don't feel like the level design in Sonic CD is really that bad aside from Wacky Workbench and Metallic Madness act 2. Those levels can go straight to hell. The rest are fine though.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is hands down the best Sonic game and even that one has a couple levels that are duds. I really do not enjoy the Marble Garden and Sandopolis act 2. At all.

Sandopolis gets better as you get better at it and it's one of the best Tails levels but it is definitely past the point of too many gimmicks.

I don't get the complaints about Marble Garden. They're common, I'm in the minority I think. It's not a great level and a big step down from Hydrocity, which I think remains my favorite level in all of Sonicness. But it's not filled with stupid death traps nor especially difficult, there's some decent speed sections and platforming mix up, other than the Tails version of the boss they're mostly decent.

it goes on for way too long and its really just not very interesting to play or look at. it has some stupid gimmicks like the top that aren't fun to play with. its just a drag, only really noteworthy thing about it is that its has like a billion rings in it which is kind of cool i guess? its still not terrible or anything but its a definite weak point in a great game

edit: it's also really easy to get lost in, especially as knuckles

I rag on Marble Garden for a simple reason - it's long and loving boring. It drags on and on and is just a chore to get through.

Sandopolis Act 2 is probably the single largest level in the entire game and it's pretty much the only level in a Sonic game ever where you actually run the risk of reaching the 10 minute time limit. Hell, as a kid, I didn't even realize it was possible to get "Time Over" until Sonic & Knuckles, and there were four whole Sonic games for the Genesis before that.

But let's talk good levels:
Sonic 1 - Green Hill and Starlight. Everyone can probably agree on that.
Sonic 2 - Mystic Cave is my favorite. I also like Hill Top and Oil Ocean a lot.
Sonic CD - Stardust Speedway. Quartz Quadrant is also cool.
Sonic 3 - Yes, Hydrocity is very fun. Like I said, it's the best water level ever. Partly because of the music, and partly because it's barely a water level and has you running on top of the water like a lizard. I really like Ice Cap, but everyone does. My favorite level in Sonic 3 is probably Launch Base. Launch Base is just cool as hell.
Sonic & Knuckles - Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Sky Sanctuary and the Death Egg are great.
Chaotix - Okay, so the level layouts in this one are a little boring, but Botanical Base looks very cool and has cool music. I like Marina Madness too.

I completely agree with you on Marble Garden. I remember reaching it for the first time and going "wow this place looks nice", and then proceed by degrees to get annoyed by that blue spinning-top thing and its intense verticality. It is also too long and boring, it overstays its welcome.

Sandopolis is also one of those damned monotonous desert levels that have a "too yellow" palette, and I'm really glad that Mirage Saloon looks way more colorful and vivid. And also that first act boss, Jesus Christ, I rolled my eyes so hard every time I had to fight that dumb thing.

But ok let's talk good levels. My personal selection:

Sonic 1: Green Hill and Starlight AND Spring Yard. I just love how original and different Spring Yard looks. To be fair, there's not a single level in Sonic 1 that I don't like. I also really like Labyrinth and Scrap Brain so (great music on those two)... I guess Sonic 1 is a big favorite for me. God, such a good game.
Sonic 2: I have to say Emerald Hill because I played it so freaking much, I had the whole level memorized like no other level in the franchise. I also had a blast with it in multiplayer. So I can't be blasé about it, it would be unfair. Mystic Cave is my other favorite.
Sonic CD: Ok. I don't think Sonic CD is all that remarkable in terms of level design. My personal opinion. But I really love all of them aesthetically. Past, present and future versions included. I don't know how to score this one. Stardust Speedway gets my vote because of the boss fight.
Sonic 3: Hydrocity and Ice Cap, hands down.
Sonic and Knuckles: Lava Reef and Sky Sanctuary. I always thought Lava Reef was so freaking cool aesthetically, and I always loved the level design. It's just a really fun, challenging level. I love it. Sky Sanctuary is really cool too.
Chaotix: Never played it so I really can't tell.

I think Sandopolis act 1 is fine - I especially like that swinging thing. It's act 2 that just becomes monotonous. It goes on forever.

And you know, I think you're on to something about Sonic CD. I have a friend or two who just HATE the game and won't stop bringing up how much they hate it. I think their complaints are exaggerated and overblown but I'll be the first to admit that the game is not perfect.

Yes, the level design is in fact nothing special, and the time travel mechanic is poorly thought out. But I just love the aesthetics and visual design of the levels in Sonic CD, as well as the music. The same thing really applies to Knuckles' Chaotix - the levels are mostly just big vertical climbs with barely any enemies or challenge, but the graphics are just so cool looking and the music is great.

I really love artwork of abstract sci-fi scenery, so the look of Sonic CD and Chaotix are like catnip to me. Some tell me it's garish and ugly. Well, the 90s were overly colorful and garish. The aesthetic is pure unashamed 90s, and Sonic is 90s as gently caress. Sonic is as in your face 90s as pogs, McHammer pants and Power Rangers. If you see these images and want to puke, you don't "get" Sonic.

I think what I really like about the remixed stages in Mania is that they aren't just porting old stages. They're adding new gimmicks and graphics and level design that invokes the old design, but isn't at all a 1-to-1 recreation, full stop. That said, I hope they have some more new levels and not *just* revisiting old stages for the most part.

Agreed. You know what, maybe you gotta have a certain aesthetic inclination to fully enjoy the Sonic CD visuals. You've got to at least tolerate a certain amount of abstraction, asymmetry and randomness to be comfortable playing it.

I used to really love 90s aesthetics, Oingo Boingo and stuff like that. The transition phase from 80s to 90s was excellent. And I love abstract sci-fi stuff too so *fistbump*, it's good to find someone who agrees with me on this!

I really hope they go with Hydrocity as the sonic 3 level. They'll probably do ice cap because thats the popular one.

It's kinda funny that half of the levels are taken from previous Sonic games, but they somehow still feel more fresh, new and interesting than Sonic 4. gently caress Sonic 4. So hard.

My same friend who hates Sonic CD with a passion also says Sonic 4 is not bad and is a better game. I think he must say that to piss me off.
