The last time a Tory didn't lead the vote was 1837, I don't think there is an analogue.

Yes but at other times it has made it easier for Labour and has been their strongly held principle for a hundred years.

Kinda but to be fair this is like an ironclad ethos of theirs that they've never budged no matter who was on top for ages. It results in situations like this, sure, but it's hardly an active ratfucking of one specific group.

it's a pretty dang cool principle to uphold, but i don't know why anybody votes to have no representation in parliament.

I mean it's not a "leftist" "rightist" issue, Sinn Fein think of themselves as separate from "the state" for reasons to do with the war

It would be a big deal if they played ball, not because they're especially extremist but because of their history of abstentionism and the JEREMY CORBYN: LITERAL MEMBER OF THE IRA stuff all over the papers

Because they believe parliament involves fealty to the queen that they don't agree with.

yea I don't exactly get it, but I also live in a country that hasn't been property of another for centuries so maybe I don't have the perspective to speak on its validity. I respect them for sticking to it no matter what through the years.

Sinn Fein don't love the idea of the oath to the queen, but the principle of abstentionism is based in the idea that organs of the British state have no legitimacy in Ireland. They've already compromised the idea by taking seats in Stormont, their refusal to sit in Westminster is far more strategic than principled.

Among other things, high turn-out's driving everything back. A couple of seats have needed full recounts too because they were so close.
