Google's the only one who will even tell you their support window (October 2018 for OS updates, October 2019 for security updates) and the reason they do is because that's as good as it gets for an Android. Samsung will give you security updates consistently for a while and for everyone else maybe you'll get something, maybe you won't. That's what passes for support these days. It's as good an iPhone which is to say that the included apps feel like they were put there with the user in mind, the service is top notch, the hardware feels premium, and (the thing that separates it from every Android that came before it:) the software has been optimized for the platform. It's a miracle but Google wasn't lying, it really is possible for Androids to consistently run well, it's just that Samsung can't do it. So yeah, the Pixel's great but it's $650-$800. Only you can really decide if you'll get enough utility out of it to justify the price.

Right now the options are: S7: $250 downpayment and $15/mo (or $370 and $10/mo) Pixel: $444 and $15/mo Koodo's Tab system doesn't stack interest or anything on the monthly payments. I was just under the impression they'd be stupid expensive and have a chance to be bootlegged or otherwise shady or whatever. I've been burned by getting electronics from Amazon before because I'm naive about supplier quality. Jesus this one is the 64GB model and it's cheaper than the G4+ my provider offers  I mean, it's big, but at that price I might be willing to deal with it.

Yeah, that's probably your best option. I've heard nothing but good things about the Amazon unlocked phones. I guess they are sold directly by Amazon so they are less likely to have some of the scams and malware that are often sold through Amazon by third party sellers. Edit: Ergh, the one you linked is used from a third party seller.. and those Canadian prices on new ones are very high. Is it possible to order the US version in USD from Amazon.com and pay any currency conversion and international shipping fees? You may still come out ahead on a new phone. No. Amazon.ca doesn't carry a lot of the things that Amazon.com does. It's around $475 CAD after Amazon's import duties/fees and currency conversion for an unlocked, ad-free 64 GB Moto G5 Plus shipped to Canada (cheapest shipping option) if that's what you're looking at. When I bought (and then returned) mine, I spent about $30 more than that to get it shipped faster.

Hello cellphone thread, I need help shopping for a senior friendly cellphone. My grandma isn't a fan of the last two models that we bought (random cheap prepaid dumbphone of the month) and I'm wondering if there's something better out there. The main issue seems to be with the difference with a land line desk phone, aka "pick up, dial tone, dial, connect, hang up" versus "dial, green button, connect, red button". She's otherwise aware and functional, but she spent ninety some years without a cellphone so heh, I'd rather find a thing that works like she's used to instead of making her feel bad about not being tech savvy. Feature wishlist: - Flip phone (or something similarly mechanical) that will emulates the way a POTS phone works, so either -- a literal dial tone on flip open (emulated of course) -- a phone that will dial out whatever 10 digits you punch in automatically (without hitting send, with hopefully detection of short strings like 911). - A zero confusion, non polarized charging port (or something like qi charging). - Big rear end T9 keypad, big rear end display who's only task is to show what you're dialing. Basically I'm looking for the simplest, most senior phone out there. No set budget (I'm legit considering having it fab'ed if it doesn't exist), don't care about the carrier, am fine with a 20 year old refurb as long as it works. Thanks in advance!

I tried getting my mom into smartphones (with a cheap Windows phone to dip her toes in) and she hated tapping on a screen, especially since she always needed to find her glasses to read anything (even with text size and contrast maxed out). Speed dial is 90% of the reason she went back to a flip phone (size the other 10%). Anyway, see if she would adapt to speed dial, ie, "hold '2' to call 'X', hold '3' to call 'Y'." (Now my mom complains about the lovely camera and makes me text people on a T9 pad. )

I got my first smart phone at 44, and I also find the button pushes required to dial to be infuriating. However, just last week I pressed the little microphone button and said 'call mom' and it did! That was delightful. Maybe try teaching your mom the voice commands, so she can pretend she is in 1960s scifi.

Verizon's website has "unlimited" for $85 with 10GB of tethering. On the numbers, it makes sense to switch, but what would I be giving up by switching? VZW forums imply I'd lose data priority over >22GB used in a month, but I don't exceed that unless I have to travel frequently, which isn't the case now. For one like on the new Verizon Unlimited it's: $65 for call, text and data $20 for line access (assuming you are not in contract) $85 total. So wouldn't be a bad option if you don't go over 22GB often and you aren't tethering often. I had a customer the other day hit the 10GB of data, it does slow down to 3G, but it's at least usable on web browsing. Also, data plan gets a discount if you were ever in the military.

I'm in India so phones are more expensive than they are in the US. My Z3 compact has started to die (headphone jack is dead and the lower 1/6th of the screen has stopped working) so I'm looking for a new phone. Since I bought the phone from outside India the official Sony repair centers won't touch it and 3rd party repair shops are quoting 200ish Usd for repairs. For 50 USD more I can get a Moto G5+ which seems to be the current recommendation for thay price range but I have a few questions. Going by benchmarks the S801 in my z3 compact is still better than the S625 in the G5+, especially wrt gpu performance. Should I be looking at an iphone SE or 6 instead? I'm also not averse to buying a huawei/xiaomi/zte since they generally offer better performance at this price range and I could probably flash some sort of rom to erase any Chinese backdoors (I'm happy to be corrected if this isn't the case). I'd like a screen that's around 5", give or take a few inches with the SE being the exception. I've done some research but would appreciate any input on the matter, thanks. I know I can't afford a pixel or the newest Galaxy or whatever cool poo poo is out there now. I need to stay around $200. I know I want more RAM than the 1g I'm working with now. S8 is 64GB instead of 32, has a technically faster processor , and the camera did get really good ratings from Ars Technica. And obviously bigger screen. That being said, I don't know if I would go for it. It's a fragile phone. Wild card: the Pixel got Better performance ratings than the S8 even though the S8 has a newer processor. So if you can, go Pixel.

I have been smart phone free for about 14 months and am considering rejoining the smartphone world. I am looking for minimalist recommendations. While it's been liberating, I really want better access to a few messenger apps. There are about 200 people I would benefit from having closer connections with, but I don't need all the other distractions; like social media, which I don't have much of a presence on anyway. I suppose maps, google translate, and a decent English<>Chinese app would help, but they are not essential. The last smart phone I had was an iPhone 5, which I bought in 2012, and had replaced under warranty. It currently has shattered screen and a 10 minute battery life. I am not a complete technophobe and I'm not broke - I usually carry my iPad Air 2 and 4g dongle with me. I also use a cheap 8Gb MP3 player for music and am thinking about getting an ebook reader. I did try having a card phone to get APP SMS authentication messages, but the $20 thing broke and no one really called me. Overall though, I feel it's a bit bulky to carry this stuff with me everywhere and I have computers at the most end points (work and home), it's the subway commute in between and after hours which suffers a little. Ideally, I wish I just had a dumb touch based terminal phone with a minimalist client which connected to a computer in the cloud running all the messenger apps and scraping out the text to be sent to my phone. Apps like kakao, line, WeChat, and Facebook keep growing. Anyone want to put up 10 million dollars to make that happen?
