It's pretty cool to see enemy infighting in Doom when they shoot at each other too much. Two imps ganged up on the cacodemon behind them after they were sick of its poo poo.

Just beaten American Wasteland! I liked that the final missions were easy, but climactic, as the missions to get the pros in the video were particularly difficult (40 shoeboxes comes to mind), so having the final casino challenges being just tearing apart an old building to get stuff was a nice way to wind down for the ending in a denouement after the climax that was recruiting the Pros for the video. Also one of the missions I wound up thinking outside the box - the one where you need to get air out of the partially flooded pool and trick on the pool lights in the casino - I couldn't get air normally, so I went to the upper floor, spined down into the pool from above and easily had the air. Then the hard part was just doing the right tricks. I appreciate that the game allowed me to do that instead of going "OUT OF BOUNDS! Try again!" as soon as I got upstairs.

I've several streamers as Jason just say "sell somebody else out and I will let you live" (since players can see everybody else if they have a map). Even if they keep up their end of the bargain it's beneficial since cornered players usually end up using their items and exhaust their stamina, while others might be fixing vehicles at that very moment.

I'm not sure if that works if you aren't playing with friends or followers tho. Who knows, people might be even more generous with such intel if you're playing with complete strangers!

I've tried a couple times as Jason to have an honourable duel, no grabs no mid-battle health sprays, if they can knock me to the ground I let everyone live. All three times they jumped out a window and ran into the woods without so much as a response :smith:

On the subject of F13 stories, I've been playing as Buggzy lately, a basketball player with top tier strength, speed, and stamina skills, but poo poo all for stealth and repairing, mostly due to my poo poo luck spawning me near Jason near constantly.

Went into a match and surprise, Jason was on me within ten seconds or so. Fortunately I was near an area with three cabins in close proximity, so I went into one, barricaded it, waited for Jason to hit the door, and left through a window. Rinse and repeat for a couple minutes until he caught on to my garbage and started smashing doors the whole way instead of disengaging and chasing after me. Eventually I run out of doors to hide behind, so I crank Jason in the face with a monkey wrench (the only god drat item in any of the cabins) and tear rear end into the woods.

A yellow icon shows up on my map, so I figure it's another place I can hide from Jason. It turns out to be a completely open graveyard, fully stocked with a second god drat monkey wrench and nothing else. Jason's slow rear end finally catches up and gets a solid hit on me with his pickaxe, so I bean him with Wrench 2: The Quickening and knock him down flat. Back into the woods I go.

After a short jog I come across a larger cabin, but I'm out of stamina and at max fear, meaning my hud's gone and my vision's black and white. Jason's on me because I'm slow as gently caress now, so I hurl myself through a closed window and hurt myself, but finally something good! The door's already barricaded!

The door's barricaded because the cabin's already been clean out of stuff like first aid spray. I take a quick glance around anyway and find a map. It turns out that while Jason's been spending all eight minutes or so of the match so far trying to kick my rear end, the rest of the survivors had free reign of the camp, and drove off in the 4-seater car and the boat without me. Jason manages to bust through the door again, so I hop out a window just in time to see Tommy Jarvis drive straight past me and off the map

Then Jason hugged me so hard I died

Something I'd like to see in a F13 movie is a character who was also bullied when he was Jason's age, although obviously not to death like he was, trying to empathise with him. Not in a "trying to control him" way, but trying to break through the supernatural bullshit fueling his rage to the scared ten-year-old who's lashing out. Even if it was unlikely to work in any meaningful way it could be an interesting type of character regardless.

The only way that discussion goes is Jason looking confused and curious for two seconds before interrupting that character mid-sentence with a machete through the skull.

Thanks for the better shot, though I think have the fun is the janky physics.

I'm really enjoying the fact that so far, most players don't take the game seriously and actually get into a role playing mind set when in game. So like what has been said already, you get some people who bargain with Jason, others will just yell and plead for their life and then you have some who (as futile as it is) attempt to sacrifice themselves for their friends.

It's kind of amazing watching random players team up like this.

Of course there's still the players that will shotgun you in the face when Jason has you by the neck and run off yelling "gently caress YOU GOT MINE"

I'm trying to play Doom as close to its original style as I can: no jumping, no vertical aiming (did mouse rotation exist back then?). I've got it displaying on a widescreen ratio and I don't know what the original frame rate was but I've got it locked at 60.

It's crazy how the tempo is so good. The weapons have good feedback and it's all told through sound and animation. You naturally develop a rhythm of juking fireballs and getting meatshots at marines and imps. One map starts with you elevated above a room full of demons and explosive barrels and it's basically saying, "You know what you wanna do."

I like how the hud tells me which weapon slots are occupied so I don't have to remember if I picked up a chaingun this run.

If that's what you want, there is an option to make your weapons stick out from the center of the screen instead of the lower right.

Also, I highly reccomend spending some time playing with no HUD. It's very tense.

EDIT: Oh wait you're not talking about Doom 4.

If you're playing GZDoom or another modern port, the original game was locked to I think 35fps and ran at 320x200.

Personally I think 320x200 looks fantastic with a modern up-port of Doom, though I'm not sure how you'd re-cap the framerate.

The underlying game does still use the same clock rate though, so it's 35fps gameplay smoothed up to 60.

These posts are so weird to me because I've been playing Doom my whole life and it's bizarre to see someone experiencing the game for the first time(?) in 2017

Mouse rotation existed, just obviously not vertically; back in the day I only used keyboard though and that's totally doable.

If you keep having fun with it, there's also 24 years of mods and custom levels for you to dip into to see all the weird sorts of poo poo people have made and how far they've pushed the engine.

GZDoom is pretty much your go-to standard, though Chocolate Doom is pretty fun because it tries to be as close to the original as possible while being modern system compatible. It even has glorious PC speaker sound capabilities!

Well, it doesn't state that you play as a different character, for one. Like, I can see how someone reading that would think "oh, so I guess things would change if I had killed the peaceful robots? Whatever, I don't care enough to go through all that again just to find out."

I mean, I personally would be interested in gameplay changes and once you make the effort to start a second playthrough it's immediately different, but if you don't care enough to bother there's not much the developer can do outside of forcing the second quest to start immediately.

They really should have done the thing they do when you finish Ending B, where they play a little trailer showing you what was coming up in the next playthrough.

Episode 2 in Doom has some really good setups. One of the maps has a Baron on one end of a hallway full of imps and cacodemons while the opposite end has an easier gauntlet but with the added prize of invulnerability and i think a berserk, so you're pretty much encouraged to punch a Baron to death.

Episode 3 has a brief difficulty spike because it feels more survival horror-y in the first couple of maps when you start with a pistol and regain your arsenal gradually, but by map 3 or 4 you've got most of your kit back.

18 years on and I'm still discovering stuff in Suikoden 2. The two fencer characters have a rune that deals double damage but with an accuracy decrease; their rune actually has an alternative attack with a different animation that deals triple damage. In the years that I've been playing Suikoden 2 that has never occured for me until today.

edit: Something that I really do appreciate is that there are only a handful of characters in Suikoden 2 that are unusable. Considering there are about 60-70 characters that you use in the regular battles, it's nice that using characters other than the top tier ones isn't artificially handicapping yourself.

One of the maps in Doom is pretty much shaped like a hand, with four narrow corridors as fingers.

And I can't believe this game has a mimic room. I thought I got turned around when I noticed one map had two exit rooms. I activated one of them and the walls pulled down and vomited a small army of demons.
