The course has been set and Trump isn't going to convince the world otherwise so we can rage about Obama or we can look to the future but either way the coal industry is rapidly shrinking and we'll have to deal with that sooner or later.

Coal isn't dead, we just have to give the largest coal mining operations in the world massive handouts so they stay profitable!quote:St. Louis-based Peabody Energy, was able to pick up 721 million tons of coal for about $1.10 a ton today under a scandalous lease program operated by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM), at cost of $1.2 billion in lost taxpayer revenue (see below). This is supposedly ‘fair market value,’ according to the BLM. However, these taxpayer-owned assets now sell on the open market in the United States for between $8-$14 a ton, and between $80-$122 a ton overseas.

Well yeah, the overall coal industry is in a decline, but it's not a freefall, either. Also, while steel is cheap, American steel is fairly expensive, because it's of a much higher quality. If there's one industry Americans have on lockdown it's steel production. If we can make our high quality steel less expensive the demand will be super high for it.

Then I think we should laser focus on metallurgical coal production as part of a general infrastructure and domestic manufacturing strategy but again this accounts for some really small % of overall coal production so if we're just talking absolute job numbers the miners are still boned no? If that spawns jobs elsewhere then great my point is simply we need a strategy to handle worker displacement and job losses in large numbers because even if you increase metallurgical coal production 100x, poo poo tons of miners are out of a job and they have few skills applicable in other fields.

Saving the environment is great and all but I don't see why we can't help the people whose jobs are directly affected by that a bit more (or at all). Too often the answer to "sure save the environment but what about people's livelihoods?" is just "oooh you hate the planet!"

If Trump is going to make his mark on politics, it's going to come through bringing back American manufacturing to some extent, and while we've been either quietly or openly laughing at all the other stuff he does, that's the poo poo he knows probably better than any President in recent history. I bet he knows the ups and downs of stuff like steel price averages and the like better than anyone in this thread, even if he is a buffoon otherwise. That's the kind of poo poo his opponents should be concerned about, IMO

And some people laughed it off like big deal that's not a lot of votes. But if he makes enough of these small targeted protections of industries he's going to start to collect a significant portion of fiercely loyal supporters no matter what he does anywhere else. It could be enough to make an impact on what will probably be another close election.
