I haven't seen a Penguins protection list yet so I'll take a shot:

Forwards:
Crosby
Malkin
Kessel
Rust
Sheary
Hornqvist
Wilson? (I don't think they'll protect Hagelin)

Defensemen:
Letang
Dumoulin
Schultz

Goalie:
Murray

My only fear is that JR will choose to protect Ian Cole.

e: A hilarious way to do Jultz a solid would be to protect him and if Vegas takes him, give him a huge offer sheet which Vegas will match because they have tons of cap space :v:

Sheary is exempt. I could see the Pens doing 8 players instead of 7 & 3. They really like Maatta. In that case it'd be:

Sid
Geno
Hornqvist
Kessel

Letang
Schultz
Dumo
Maatta

if 7 and 3 it would be

Sid
Geno
Hornqvist
Kessel
Rust
Hagelin
Sundqvist (I've heard they have a huge boner for him for some reason)

Letang
Dumo
Schultz

I guess none of this matters though if Vegas is intent on taking Maf. I'd think that Vegas would want to trade for Maf and then take another Pen in the ED though.

Yeah I expect Vegas will end up with both MAF and one of the Pens' forwards. If so they just might go 4/4 instead of 7/3. I could see that.

e: Protecting Hornqvist instead of Rust or Sheary makes no sense though. He's old and only has one year left on his contract. He doesn't have a NMC does he?

As I mentioned, Sheary is exempt. I don't think Hornqvist has a NMC but I still bet they'd protect him before Rust. Hard to say though.

I'd hate to lose him but the best case for the Pens (assuming Vegas gets two players) is probably Maf + Hagelin. That's a good chunk of cap gone. If Vegas is smart they'd take Rust though.

Tbh looking at Hagelin's contract the Penguins should probably be leaving him exposed and hoping Vegas takes him if they don't want Fleury. Like Hagelin's good and all but he gets paid like a top six player when he's a third liner through and through.

I think Hagelin is worth his contract, but since the Penguins were reportedly healthy scratching him in the playoffs I don't know that the Pens agree.

Hagelin's one of those weird players who probably is worth more than his point totals indicate. That also makes him an easy target when you need to reduce your cap total though

Hags owns because you can put him on any line and that line is instantly better at possession. I'd hate to lose him but at 4 million cap I guess I'd rather lose him than Rust.

Dropping Fleury and Hagelin gives us an additional 10 million in cap to play with. It would be thrilling if both went to Vegas with the UFAs available this offseason.

Edit: Jesus typos, that was a catastrophe of a wake up post.

I agree he brings more than points but when you have to lose a good player to the expansion draft because you have lots of good players, I think he'd be one of the "better" players to lose.

Hagelin makes barely more than Olli Maatta and is signed for 2 fewer years. And Hagelin is good whereas Maatta sucks. I'd much much rather tempt Vegas to take Olé's contract off the Penguins' cap.

e: the trouble with Hagelin is that he's rarely healthy. And seems to have a rep for not being tough. His speed alone is game altering though

The jets signed Marko Dano to a 1 year 850k contract today. That brings them to 8 forwards eligible for the expansion draft. If they sign say Thorburn to a 1 year deal that would make it possible for them to go 7-3-1 (need to expose two forwards). It might mean they have a deal in place to either trade one of their d-men, or to expose a dman and have Vegas take someone else.

That would be cool except the Penguins seem to like him enough for some reason that they might protect him and also Vegas will probably do the smart thing and pick a player that is not bad.

He's generally been pretty healthy until this season. Misses some games yeah but not like Beau Bennett level or anything. Not sure why he has a rep for not being tough? He's one of the best conditioned players in the entire league and his board work is fantastic for a smaller guy. He's not going to fight or throw huge checks all the time or something and I have no idea why anyone would expect that of him.

I won't try to defend Matta this post season because his performance was indefensible. That said, he's gone through a lot in the past two years. Not just injuries, but surgery to remove malignant tumors as well. Prior to this year, he has actually been pretty good.

I think with an off season of strength training and conditioning you could see him rebound. Not saying it's certain, but I see more potential upside in Maatta than in Hags at roughly the same price. The more I think about it though, the less I'm sure of my own stance.

Not allowing MAF&Murray votes was dumb. Another John Scott case of the NHL working hard to prevent some positive media coverage and cool stories.

MAF is the best, I'm super happy he is in a place where he feels appreciated as a mentor and got to share a "pass the torch" moment. I'm hoping they expose him to protect Murray, then Vegas chooses younger goalies, and MAF stays on Pitt. I know he won't cause he can def start a few more years, but I love his spirit and style.

Once the expansion draft shakes out I'll be tempted to write him a "you rock, best of luck" letter in French. Last athlete I liked this much was Vlad Guerrero when he was here with the Expos.

I hope this means they trade Ceci.

What it will actually mean is losing Methot, who is far superior to Ceci, for nothing.
