Seems a lot more likely than a mine in the middle of the atlantic.

Just a guess but maybe a submarine laid it

A submarine laid floating mines out in the middle of the atlantic? Was that a real thing ? That seems incredibly inefficient.

quote:

At 0510 on 13 June, a large sheet of flame and dense smoke were seen rising from the Escanaba, though no explosion was heard by the other ships in the convoy. She sank at 0513, going down so quickly that she did not have time to send any distress signals. Storis and Raritan were ordered to investigate and rescue survivors while the rest of the convoy began zigzagging and steering evasive courses to avoid enemy submarines. Although Storis and Raritan were able to arrive on the scene within ten minutes, only two survivors and one body could be found. At 0715 the two vessels returned to the main body of the convoy, having rescued Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Melvin A. Baldwin and Seaman 1st Class Raymond F. O'Malley, Jr., and having found the body of LT Prause. The entire crew of 13 officers and 92 men was lost to the explosion or to rapid hypothermia in the 39 °F (4 °C) water with the exception of Baldwin and O'Malley, whose survival was attributed to their soaked clothing having frozen their unconscious bodies to floating debris, which prevented them from following their shipmates to the bottom.

The exact cause of the explosion could not be determined at the time, but was commonly attributed to a torpedo fired by one of several U-Boats which were in the area at the time. However, no U-Boats claimed the kill, and, according to Browning, it is now considered more probable that the cutter was sunk by a drifting mine.

I've decided to start censoring my combat reports for security. That or we have a weird graphical bug today.

The Liberators continue to pound Luganville airfield.

The first wave of Chinese reinforcements has reached Noumea.

At least my plane losses have dropped off recently.

We reoccupy a base in the mountains.

Taking a base is always nice.

The Kido Butai is now undergoing refit.

It's honestly kind of amazing that the few remnants of the Chinese forces are still blocking the road at the Burmese border. It's like the game doesn't want you to have a continuous route from Korea to Burma.

Any plans to soften up Noumea with naval bombardments before sending your pixelmen over the top? After the glory of sinking all those carriers a while back, your battleships seem a bit quiet. And while they're in the neighborhood, sending them at Fiji few times might quiet down those Liberators long enough to allow you to rebuild Luganville.

Is it usual to have all of those CVs in refit at the same time? Seems like this should be the happy hunting time before the tsunami of American naval air comes crashing down.

Where the hell did the AI even put them aboard ships, let alone why are they being used off the mainland?

He means Japanese troops freed up from being used in China, which he then spent a boatload of political points to reassign them to this area.

Oh, right. Yeah, that'd make sense.

I'm just so used to the insane stuff the AI has been invading with I just assumed they'd run out of Kiwi desk troops to send to their deaths and had moved onto something else.

The Hyuga continues to net some kills.

The Allies get to the beaches though.

I need some patrol boats out here.

Liberators claim another kill.

We send another Chinese force into full retreat.

The little force based at Luganville is doing a great job.

With the carriers in refit, we're not seeing massive kills like the previous few months.

Nah, they were barely in service by 41 and pretty much stayed that way while the channel war was a serious thing. Four 20mm cannons gently caress up light boats p good.

A large group of snipers get another hit.

Then another – they never hit anything when I was using them.

Balls of steel.

I've sallied the Kiddo Butai, and its their fighters that help us bring down a bomber.

We see a fighter scrap.

I hate B-17s. Thankfully we're well up on the kills today, and they took a lot of operational losses.

Phew!

Flak does it's work.

We make an attack, and pay a heavy cost for a level of forts – time to rebuild and await further reinforcements.

Marine raiders take an undefended island.

One of our ships sinks at the very sight of a B-17.

Another fighter lost.

A costly day, but I needed to see what I was up against.

Two ships? That's terrible! We must send out the carriers and redress this!
