Beet Wagon posted:I've been home sick recently, and playing a shitload of Grand Theft Auto V, and one thing I noticed is how well Rockstar made the AI seem like it works. Once you start looking closely you notice spawn configurations and duplicates and paths and all that, but if you're just cruising around it really does look and feel like you're in a city. I was thinking yesterday that they managed to make something look good without being overly complex and eating up a shitload of resources, and I can't for the life of me imagine CIG being able to get fifteen NPCs to share a cafeteria together without it going completely wrong, subsumption and all. Have you seen people playing GTA V RP on Twitch? It's amazing how alive the city feels, when you throw a bunch of real people role-playing in.

Not huge amounts of fun, but pitched at a price *YOU* can afford. http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/ - Orbiter 2016 - Also priced to move. *SIM*-heavy for the man who likes to read and not *SHOWER*. http://store.steampowered.com/app/401980/The_Universim_Demo/ - Demo for the kickstarter Universim, which *I* backed. God I hope it's not *poo poo*. http://www.swimbots.com/ - evolutionary simulator. *STRANGELY* Arousing. https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/en/ - The Daddy. You have not *LIVED* until you've had to eva *A KERBAL* in a high parabola that stepped off the *LADDER*. Fly *EAST* young man. http://universesandbox.com/ - Neat little physics simulator that they keep adding content to. Such as the possible distant planets in the solar system and a bunch of the exo-systems. Also pictured in the pitch for NDT's latest embarrassment, that *PLUTO HATING HACK*. edit: Honorable mention for SAM Simulator - https://sites.google.com/site/samsimulator1972/home - "Includes accurate representations of history's most famous SAM kills... ...U-2C Spy plane over Sverdlovsk and Cuba ... ...B-52D/G Heavy bombers over Hanoi ... ... F-4E Phantoms over the Sinai ... ...F-16 and the F-117A Stealth bomber over Belgrade." - Claims accuracy to the switch for modern SAM systems, so you too can cause an international incident from the comfort of your rickety chair. How is the way CIG have done things in any way, shape, or form, better than how publishers do things? Pretty much identical approaches, monetizing the poo poo out of everything, promising lofty goals, CIG just charge 10x the normal rate for everything because "visionary leader". The only thing CIG have done that is different is they got their money from hapless rubes rather than savy company investors.

Each of these is a checkmate on it's own, but I will deign to respond as if you are being serious: 1. Open Development. No publisher has ever allowed open development of this unprecedented depth and scale. 2. Pushed forward game tech by at least a few decades. All other publishers are Too Scared to do this. 3. Allowed unprecedented freedom, where Design Is Law. 4. Derek Smart has never made a game. 5. Pledges is not money, it is hopes and dreams made manifest. They are not greedy, they are a vessel that WE are Deciding to Fill using Disposable Income. How much do your hobbies cost anyway? What are you, poor?

Sum Mors posted:I found your cake stuff interesting, but it is mostly lies based on a grain of truth. i stand corrected. But the rest of the idea is still sound. You have to give a little immersion to your players regarding mission briefing/quests. Too much is bad (like in COH early days where you had to walk back to the quest giver at the other end of the city to turn in completed missions) but too little is worse, making the world feel empty and unlived in. This can be used if your aiming for the "Are you sure your more than just a machine ?" cyberpunk ambiance where you get missions in real time via reticular implants, locked in your own little bubble of corporate hell but i dont think this is what SC "bespoke space bar/ camping fire beside landed ship" aim for.
