This is precisely what Chris Roberts believes in.

He builds systems, and from these systems, gameplay magically emerges.

He believes these systems can be modular as well, and built by different groups, and plug in together to work.

I'm pretty sure this is what a number of devs who tout 'emergent gameplay' as a feature they're building towards believe. It's pretty easy to skip over the necessary 'fun-checking' steps if you just throw your faith in a weird-rear end deus ex machina branch of a branch of game design.

goddamn these people are shilling so hard

like nothing is going to save 3.0 from being bad so now the narrative is "yeah nothing is getting fixed, but this is the first small step in getting functionality online, don't expect much"

I really enjoyed the 5 straight minutes of pure "Do you think we'll see X" speculation where one guy would ask a question and the other two would go "OH YEAH DEFINITELY"

I've been home sick recently, and playing a shitload of Grand Theft Auto V, and one thing I noticed is how well Rockstar made the AI seem like it works. Once you start looking closely you notice spawn configurations and duplicates and paths and all that, but if you're just cruising around it really does look and feel like you're in a city. I was thinking yesterday that they managed to make something look good without being overly complex and eating up a shitload of resources, and I can't for the life of me imagine CIG being able to get fifteen NPCs to share a cafeteria together without it going completely wrong, subsumption and all.

The crowd system in the Assassin's Creed games is similar, in that it's obvious if you pay attention how the spawning, etc. works, but when you're just barrelling through the city on a mission it actually makes it feel really lived in. I'm hoping FDev go a similar route when they get around to ambulation stuff in Elite: Dangerous (the crowds in Planet Coaster work pretty well too).

daylight ssssaving time
I decided to have my own go at an estimate of the CIG cash flow. I've tried to take an optimistic view of CIG and so I think this paints a best case scenario for them. This mainly includes the assumption that running offices in LA, Austin, and Frankfurt is significantly more efficient than a single large office in Manchester. I've based this on a number of factors and tried to ignore the "Restoration Hardware factor". In my opinion, even if you remove the estimated motion capture expenses from Foundry 42 there is still a lot of room for possible pork in their budget. If you make the assumption that Foundry 42 / Manchester is an efficiently run company then you sort of have to add another $15m+ to the USA budget for the five years.
