The new guy is the automation guy, and i'm sure he knows where the future is going. Less ownership, more automated sharing.

It's not going to be the people with the interesting cars jumping on automation, it's going to be the people with appliance cars. Competition for sales in the remaining market is going to be for the olds and the enthusiasts. Everyone else will be drawn towards automated electric car sharing.

I drove a 98 Taurus SHO with the whacky 3.4L DOHC V8 for a couple years. It was an incredibly smooth and wonderful sounding engine (and had a penchant for self-grenading). The engine in mine was reliable, but the rest of the car fell to bits after enduring 14 horrible Michigan years.

If you ever come across This Book, do give it a read. It's very interesting, even if you don't give a poo poo about Ford or bubble-Taurus'.

The problem is that Ford (and everyone else really) does not have their eye on the upcoming model years at all, they are in full on existential crisis mode between self driving and electric.

quote:

Big automobile companies' "complacency about electric vehicle (EV) technology is worse than perceived," analyst Alexander Haissl wrote in a note to clients Monday. "With no clear pathway to high-volume EV production for these OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] before the mid-2020s, Tesla will be given a near-monopolistic opportunity to gain market share and outcompete the incumbent automotive industry."

"Tesla's disruptive potential encompasses the vehicle, the entire production process and the product-to-market strategy. Once the business reaches scale, the cash generation potential is significantly superior to existing premium OEMs," he wrote.

That's from a research report from the perspective of someone who is just as hot on Tesla as could be, so take it with a huge grain of salt. Obviously they are taking this poo poo seriously with the CEO firing, but exactly how quickly they pivot and start neglecting old fashioned ICE vehicles remains to be seen.

Ford says they have a full electric 300 mile electric CUV coming in 2020. I think, as i'm sure they do, they have enough market presence to hold out until the electric vehicle is profitable at a price point similar to their current models, and losing money on an electric CUV will only take sales from their profitable ICE CUVs

Until the infrastructure is cheap and widely available, an electric car is still very much a luxury item. Until a percentage of businesses, condos, apartments, workplaces support it, electric cars can't appeal at a practical level to the average person.

The Tesla is still a luxury item sold at luxury item prices and still not profitable. It shouldn't be surprising that volume mid market manufacturers owned by shareholders that just sacked the CEO for only making $10b profit last year aren't jumping at this.

Tesla will always have that apple shine, but i don't think fans of it can stretch to buy that BMW on a Kia budget the say way they can with an iphone or a macbook.

Yeah, limited range and slow recharging are going to hold back electrics for quite a while. It's going to take several technological breakthroughs yet. Things are better than they were by quite a bit, but it still has a ways to go.

I hate that they did that, because I like almost all the Ford cars right now. What's this new guy do? Axe the Focus RS :argh: I mean really, Ford has 3-4 attainable enthusiast minded cars right now(focus st, rs, fiesta st, fusion sport?). Toyota can't even be bothered to make one. They have Subaru kinda do it. And the lexus ones are all fat GT cars. Like other posters said, I hope they don't gently caress it up. But I think the old gutting the company to make quarterly gains set is gonna give us another windstar.

With the number of subscriptions we have these days I can see the allure of deciding what you can afford based on what you can afford per month, and then taking whatever terms will let you get the most car at that rate.

The reason people get underwater and roll their debt is because nobody wants to be paying new car prices for a 7 year old car.

It does take a bit of willpower to not just go out and get the car that you could totally "afford" right now and instead opt for some level of sensibility.

It is important to avoid confusion. This is the one that's okay to lick.

I had a co-worker who asked me, incredulously, how I could afford to put as much as I did in my 401(k).

While, granted, I do not have a wife and daughter to support like he did, he also made twenty-eight thousand more earth dollars than I did at the time, and lived in a paid-off house that is taxed on its value from 1980.

On the other hand, he'd paid off his Dodge Ram after 5 years (he needed a pickup truck for his racing motorcycle), and two months later bought a Focus RS (full price), then after about two months again traded that in for an Expedition because he needed the cargo space for his RC airplane hobby. This was okay, because "The payment's only about $30 more a month." He generally has a new smartphone every 8 months or so.

I've had the same car since 1999. I want a new, shiny car. But I'm not getting one until I'm comfortable cutting a check for it.

The RS has always traditionally been produced during the final two years of the current Focus version. The current version that is available is the MK 3 RS. The 2018 Focus is going to an all new platform and many people, myself included, did not think Ford was going to make a 2018 RS, but they apparently decided to do a limited run for the 2018 MY and call it the special edition. It's mainly cosmetic changes, with the addition of a Quaife LSD.

If Ford decides to bring the MK 4 RS to the States again, it will happen towards the end of the upcoming platform's life, likely 4-5 years from now.

It's not a remote start, it's just a primitive push button start. You still have a key slot that you have to put the key in and turn it just like you would on any other car. You then push the start button. Turning it off is just like any other car that uses keys. You get a really awesome noise when you hit the start button again because you're used to hitting it to shut the car off in your daily driver.

I worked at a Honda dealer in 2004-2005 - and much time was spent trying to make people understand how to work this. You still have a key, and you turn it to on - but you start it with the button because RACECAR. The ignition switch in my Scirocco broke around that time so naturally I replaced it with a button. (ugh)

I also spent a lot of time teaching other sales people how to drive manuals. They WANTED to learn in the S2000. Would you like to stall it over and over? That would have been the worst car EVER to learn in, though I hear the AP1s were even harder. The ep3 Civic SI was bad enough with the dong shifter coming out of the dash. So what did we use? A strange beige 4WD CRV EX 5 speed we had that nobody would ever buy.

The ep3 had a cool hidden compartment under the cupholders in the center console. The RSX has a cover over its cup holder that opens two ways - one as a tray and one as a cupholder. Those interiors had to designed by the same guy for sure, and that dude wanted a hiding place.

and it being on the left side is the old Porsche "jump in and start it while throwing it in gear and peel out" strategy.

my 2013 5 series manual with pushbutton start (on the right side though) doesn't let you start it unless the clutch is depressed so I could peel out if I also didn't have to de-engage the electric parking brake as well. :saddowns:

My wife's Opel GT had a pushbutton start for the same reason. The combination of GM wiring designs and Bosch electronics was almost as bad as Lucas.

Never seen a factory one but there was one of the "writers" I use the term loosely in Max Power back in the early 2000s that had remote start fitted to a MK 4 Ford Escort RS and left it in gear only to watch it lurch strait into a wall.

Modern ones require you to leave the engine running when you get out so the auto-start computer knows FOR SURE it's in neutral or it won't work (It will turn the engine off automatically when you close the door and walk away).

I was thinking about getting one actually.
