Mass effect 2 is also really good. Good characters and it manages to heavily tone down the stupid fiddly poo poo many rpgs get saddled with.

note: planescape: torment is actually a bad game, but the writing totally makes up for that. New Vegas is also in the same boat to some extent (the gameplay isn't quite as bad tho).

There is a version of dungeons and dragons that doesn't suffer from poorly designed magic classes, rampant class/party imbalances, tons of fiddly weird corner case rules, or incredibly vague/bad technical writing.
