Why not spend the money on a guy like Jonathan Bernier or, christ, even Ryan Miller? You'll probably get similar performance, and they might be cheaper to boot. i'd probably prefer bernier here but ryan miller probably costs the same. i think it comes down to the cachet of a veteran goalie. edit: and to put a finer point on that, mike smith was insane in the playoffs that one time also this might not be such a fleecing because domingue/smith for the goalie protection slot is a legitimate debate

I get the idea of the trade from Arizona's perspective, but not Calgary's. I suppose Arizona could be sending an asset along for Calgary to take Smith's contract but even then it would be weird for the Flames.

So with this you get trades like strome and #7 for stepan or deangelo and #7 and #23, or idiots swinging for the fences with OEL and #23. I don't doubt stepan would fit good on the coyotes, but there's no point in trying to win now and any of these trades are just going to help the rangers out.
