The First Come First Serve achievement specifically requires Western tech. It's a holdover from before Institutions when tech groups meant more than just your unit types and whether or not you start as tribal.

The Age bonus that gives you +dev for completed colonies works for Siberian Frontiers provinces. I have like 20 colonists going right now. That's hundreds of free dev points potentially by the end of the Age.

Mr. Fowl posted:

Though I'm not sure if it's possible to do both First Come and From Humble Origins at the same time--or does the cost for tech group not count against the cost for the achievement?

It does count against it but it's still possible, you just have to start as a duchy and with a 0 0 0 ruler and so on to get you some points back.

Turns out it's possible to get Ideas Guy at the same time too even without picking the 800 points option (I guess it only checks for the 3 dev province start) so I'm going for that as well. It's definitely a different kind of game. I don't think I'm gonna get the achievement by 1640 or whatever someone else got, but I have all of South and Mesoamerica in the early 1500s which feels completely insane.

Although I don't feel as overpowered as I expected, monarch points have been a struggle especially with the 20 y/o 0 0 0 start and no rivals to get power projection out of. I have more than a thousand development and armies half made of banners but I feel way more fragile than in a normal game since I haven't really stopped to pause and statify things and so on. It's also a pain in the rear end to try to manage an empire spread all over the Americas.

I am sure there's a setting in game but I can't remember where. Maybe in graphics options?

I am doing the siberian conquest of south America and drat it's broken. I am taking it slow, it's 1495 and I am just now beating the aztecs to gain access to North America proper but I already own half of Peru, all of Colombia, a decent chunk of brazil and am colonizing the caribbean.

Castile still has 0 ideas and both france and england have two non-colonizing idea groups. Seems my only opposition in the short term will be Portugal, which has no alliances. Lol

It's not in the main game options, only in the options that you can set when starting a new game. From the country select screen, click the options button and you'll see this list:

Dear EU4 goons, if you enjoy playing eu4, why not play it with goons?

Our PGS thread is here and it includes a link to the discord we use to organize and run our games.

I highly recommend people give it a try. We have a few new people every game and they (mostly) enjoy it.

You could be part of this:

That's the player mapmode, a collation of screenshots, from our current Thursday game that is going to wrap up in the next couple of weeks. After that we'll run a new game. Best of all, you don't need the DLC with paradox games - only the host does.

We play in 3/4 hour sessions, once a week. Right now there are NA friendly games Tuesday and Thursday, and an EU/NA friendly game on Saturday. We also play HOI4 and some other joke games, but I mostly stick to EU4.

Please pop into our PGS thread and into our discord if you have any interest in playing. We are very welcoming and always eager to add new blood. It doesn't matter how good or bad you are, you are welcome to play with us.

Also, you can totally ignore references to a steamgroup in that OP. We don't use it anymore.

Maybe I am really dumb, but how do I create a custom nation with Siberian Conquest ideas? I go into the nation designer and under diplomatic ideas, is it just the "May Establish Siberian Frontiers" idea? I tried that one last night and it gave me a normal colonist who cost me maintenance. I have Third Rome, so it's not that.

Yeah, i think I needed to reboot EU4 and/or Steam. When I tried this time I was able to start a nation and didn't get a free colonist. But it looks like I need at least one normal colonist to make it work? So I'll have to reboot my ideas setup. Not a big to-do.

Thanks!

No, you don't. Here's what it looks like:

You just click on an empty province next to a core with a line to your cap and then click on that dude in the circle in the top right of the colonise popup.

It doesn't need to be next to a core -- just next to a province that 1) you own and 2) has a direct land connection of any length to your capital. So as soon as you conquer a province you can Frontier off it.

The thread title is right: get all of them if you really like the game, just wait for sales if money is tight, you can relatively often find the less recent ones from 33% to 75% off.

Having 600 hours of playtime I think I got more than my money's worth even buying some at full price.

The two latest expansions are more narrow in scope (mandate of heaven is mostly China/east Asia stuff, third rome pretty much Russia only) and don't make much sense if you don't intend to play in the areas affected. Cossacks is cool but skippable. Rights of man is more general and imo a must have. Mare Nostrum kinda sucks and is only worth it at 50%+ off if only for the naval missions to avoid micromanagement of fleets (Paradox can we please have something like that for armies pleeease?).

Check out all details here and see if you think it's worth getting them or not: http://www.eu4wiki.com/Downloadable_content

I have never tried religion switching, how does that work? I am 1650 Byzantium but not getting much benefit from Orthodox and might want to go Catholic or Coptic

Sage Grimm
Feb 18, 2013

Let's go explorin' little dude!
The typical method is to have a province with the religion you want to convert to that is incapable of being converted by missionary. Then send a missionary on his futile mission, and either accede to the zealot's demands or have them spawn. If you do the latter each province they conquer will be force-converted to their religion (along with some manpower/taxation penalties for two years), which saves you time on shifting your entire country over to that religion after acceding/breaking to their demands.

IncredibleIgloo
Feb 17, 2011

The easiest way to religion switch is to:
-Create hordes of Zealot rebels of your preferred religion. Do this by sending a missionary to a province with desired religion. Make sure you turn down missionary maintenance to 0, so they never progress.
-When these rebels are about to pop turn off fort maintenance.
-They will flip the religion of every province they occupy.
-When the majority of your country is of their religion you can accept their demands, and you will lose 50 prestige and switch religions.

If you are at peace the rebels can enforce their demands, which will switch your religion, but you may wish to have them occupy your entire country first. To do this, be at war with someone. While at war they can not enforce demands and will continue to convert all your provinces.

Be warned that helpful vassals or allies during a war may complicate this strategy.

i've only done it for coptic ottomans so i'm not sure how it works with christian heretic religions. but you give the dhimmi coptic provinces, make them mad, and then revoke the land and coptic zealots spawn and break your nation

QuarkJets

What happens if you have a bunch of conversion bonuses? Just restart the missionaries when they get close to done? I set missionary maintenance to zero but they still will take like 12 months for all of my catholic provinces

Half the patch is new unit models for Russian and other steppe countries so if you're not interested in that then probably wait for a sale. The new Russian mechanics are pretty neat and help you grow and manage a big empire and build a big army quick.

IIRC you will have to change to a monarchical government if you want to form Russia and get the free colonisation tradition. Apart from that you're still stuck between Muscovy, Sweden and the Latvian Order and in for a rough start.

these posts aren't even the *play 500 hours, wind up disliking game anyway*, which I think is fine; these are people who already bought the game complaining about a price hike that they won't even have to pay, after the game has undergone multiple price drops. It's kind of odd

Hey so I was at war and the rebels were able to enforce their demands anyway. So maybe that's something that has changed. Either way this was fine in my case because if a majority of the country hadn't flipped yet, so when the rebels eneforced their demands that gave me -10% missionary strength, which will make spawning rebels easier next time (I have max patriarch authority so my missionaries are really good atm)

e: I think my rate of conquest at this point is too high to reasonably convert. Kind of a bummer, Orthodox kind of sucks before the Rome patch
e2: Wait, if I take provinces that are already Catholic then I'm helping to make progress on conversion! I'll do that
