Kinda. Like Dwayne Johnson is decent in it, and it was notable for his first "dramatic role". It's not all that dramatic, but he did a little bit more than his usual fair at that point. that's really it though. rest is kind of trash.

The most terrible thing about Be Cool is Steven Tyler playing Steven Tyler. Sadly I can't find the scene on YouTube where John Travolta's character explains what the actual meaning is of a song STEVEN WROTE THE LYRICS TO.

Tenzarin posted:John Travolta was in Hairspray and Battlefield Earth. The Hairspray remake is so bizarre to me. The original is a loving tribute to freaks, rebels, and societal outcasts made by a wonderful creep eschewing his grimy aesthetic to make something subversive that the squares could watch. The remake is this strange sanitized thing about institutionalized, packaged weirdness made by a major studio for high school theater kids.

I'm not very well read on this stuff, but I think I agree with Chomsky that a lot of marxist-theory and stuff like "dialectics" is a buncha intellectual fraud. Žižek isn't very hard to read, but Derrida and Lacan are harder to penetrate than quantum physics, and I don't really understand why it needs to be that way if there's really anything going on there. Idk, I'm about to read some Hegel and start Das Kapital so maybe after that I'll be able to understand it. It's validating tho that Chomsky doesn't understand dialectics. It's more that the modern interpretation of dialectics is often a bunch of hooey. Go back to some of the ancient Greek writings, particularly (especially, even) Plato, and you'll see that it's essentially an idea of finding truth by being contrarian to established thought, which is a perfectly acceptable form of argument, to the point that many of the great Roman orators used it frequently. Marxist dialectic is 31 flavors of bullshit. Hegel is impenetrable to me, so I can't really comment on his stuff.

Admittedly I haven't read Das Kapital in probably four or five years, but my issue with Marx isn't really his conclusions (considering pretty much my entire family has branded me the socialist black sheep) but more the circuitous -- at best -- reasoning he uses to get to them.

Zizek is a charlatan and honestly in terms of the depth and significance of his analysis he is one step removed from "Kamala Harris is Danaerys Targaryen" hot takes. If people are going to read Marxian theory in 2017 I would suggest cutting out the psychoanalysis (the real fraud in all this) and look at some Hardt and Negri at least
