And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

What's weird is that they already have this power.

Then there's the whole bullshit of "designated areas" .

So, if the cops just call music festivals "designated areas" then they don't even need suspicion that a person has anything on them, they now have the legal power to just search anyone at any time.

How much more power do they need?

Seeing as in "designated areas" they don't need to have a reasonable suspicion that you are carrying weapons, yet the wording of the law as you quoted doesn't mention drugs in any way, I'd imagine someone has pointed out that particular loophole and wanted it closed.

Apparently the mosque stopped being hardline back in 2005 too. So not only have they got the wrong mosque but the mosque they're saying is a problem hasn't been that way for over a decade. I'm not NSW Greens, but the guy is a serial offender. He's been an OB and staffer, and exploited the branch autonomy rule to avoid being booted out. I've personally heard from easily a dozen young women (most of whom have left the Greens because of him and people like him) and there's a string of complaints going back nearly 10 years. I have no idea why NSW has been so bad at responding to this - I have a suspicion that it might be in part because of their factional infighting and the threat of bad press.

And he is definitely not the only one. I know of a number of Young Greens (who are almost all like you describe) who have been serial abusers and sexually harrass many young members, and usually go unpunished. Thankfully, in Queensland at least, those are shamed out of the Party (and in a couple of cases, forced to resign from OB or staffer roles), but there still isn't an institutional response or mandatory reporting/suspension system that it needs.

Bottom line: it's going to be an uphill battle against branch autonomy and anti-centralisation advocates, but National Conference needs to develop and enforce a National Standard for Dispute Resolution and a National Anti-Bullying & Anti-Abuse Code. Chances are though, that they won't because it makes us look bad to admit that a small minority of our members and supporters are misogynists and abusers.

quote:

NICK GRIMM: Ten years ago this week, one of the defining moments in Australian national life began unfolding in remote communities in the outback.

The Northern Territory intervention was launched by the then Howard government in response to reports of social dysfunction and allegations of endemic abuse of women and children in remote communities.

Since then, the policy has continued under governments of both persuasions.

But 10 years on critics of the Intervention say it's fixed nothing.

Pat Turner is currently CEO of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.

She was previously a CEO of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, ATSIC, and had a long career as a senior Commonwealth public servant.

I spoke to Pat Turner a little earlier.

Pat Turner, can I start by asking you this: Ten years on, what's the best thing you have to say about the Northern Territory Intervention?

PAT TURNER: (Laughs) Nothing, really, I'm afraid.

It was a complete violation of the human rights of Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory.

It came out of the blue, following the Commonwealth Government's reading and response to The Little Children Are Sacred report.

NICK GRIMM: So how would you describe the legacy of the process that began 10 years ago?

PAT TURNER: Well, I think it's still a shambles.

You know, both sides of politics were responsible.

While it was introduced by the Liberal government, the Coalition under John Howard and Mal Brough, it was carried on also by Jenny Macklin and Kevin Rudd and Gillard and so on.

So the legacy is that Aboriginal people were completely disempowered.

They had the Army going into communities in their uniforms. They had no idea why the Army was there.

You know, to send the Army in at a time like that was just totally confusing. People were terrified that they'd come to take the kids away. There would be no explanation as to why they were going in.

And it wasn't their fault; it was the way the Government handled it.

The government also, at the time, insisted that every child under 16 have a full medical check. Now, actually what they were looking for, I think, was whether a child had been sexually abused.

And we said, at the time, those of us who were opposed to the way the Government was handling this, "You cannot do that without parental permission. You must have parental permission. You would not do a medical check on any other child in Australia and you should not do that with our children without their parents' say-so".

And what's more, fine, go ahead, do a full medical check, but what are you going to do when you find the otitis media, when you find the trachoma, when you find the upper respiratory diseases, when you find rheumatic heart disease? Where…
Bold it all (etc.) Oh and there's more that's just an excerpt. Didn't want to get anyone too upset.

Oddly, in my experience, it's not authority that drives that, but a large segment of members and supporters who are willing to overlook internal issues for electoral gain. I've seen a couple of major staffing crises where, if this was any other organisation, it would have been dealt with swiftly and relatively competently by OBs, but any efforts to support victims, resolve disputes or punish perpetrators of abuse were torpedoed by members who didn't want public backlash.

Have a look at the Socialist Workers Party in the UK if you want an idea as to how it will go down. Hopefully it won't because the Greens are a bigger organisation with more to lose if they ignore it, but the organisational structure will make reform very difficult.

“It’s not financial. Nobody’s quitting,” Senator Hinch told 3AW radio.

Lawyer and academic Rosalind Croucher has been named as Australia’s new Human Rights Commission president, replacing the outgoing Gillian Triggs.

Attorney-general George Brandis announced Croucher’s appointment on Tuesday, and said she would begin her seven-year term on 30 July.

Croucher is the Australian Law Reform commission president, and has previously advocated reform of the 18C provisions in the Racial Discrimination Act, which she said were too broad.

Croucher has also pushed for changes to the commission’s complaints-handling procedures.

Brandis praised Croucher on Tuesday for her “pragmatic, constructive and analytical approach to law reform”.

“Professor Croucher has had an illustrious career as a lawyer and member of the academy,” Brandis said.

“Her strong leadership of the ALRC, and expertise in complex areas of the law, has enhanced its respected public image,” he said.

Triggs departs the commission after coming under sustained attack from elements of the Coalition and News Corp.
