The main design goal of memory cards was to alleviate the low storage capacity of consoles/cartridges of the time by offloading save data to an external device. Once hardware improved to the point that was plenty of internal storage to go around, memory cards became unnecessary.

Using memory cards to swap saves/unlocks/whatever from person to person or console to console was a happy coincidence that was wholly unrelated to their intended purpose, from the manufacturer's point of view. From the consumer's point of view it could be a key feature and selling point. At a time when the technology and industry culture favored the sharing of data and purchased hardware, manufacturer's where happy to let people enjoy this side benefit.

You will almost certainly never see memory cards come back, for two reasons. The first is they are technologically pointless anywhere there is internet service. Save data could or other user-specific information could easily be transferred from console to console over the internet if that anyone wanted to implement it. The second is that today's manufacturer's do not want to implement it. In the 90's sharing was good. Today it is still good to the consumer, but the manufacturer hates it. They don't want you sharing anything like that with other people. This is a console generation that only begrudgingly allows the transfer of games via physical disk because there was a consumer revolt when they planned to take that away. Every single thing that can be tagged to an individual, is tagged to an individual. People might still have a desire to swap or share save files and such, but the industry does not like that.

Ah thanks for the informed answer. I hated memory cards in the day and still kind of do, but it seems like they'd be useful for situations such as either getting a new console or going over to a friend's place who has the same game or console. But yeah at the same time I can see why manufacturers today would hate it.

I was hooked on EQ for a couple of years, maybe a bit more. I think my logged hours were something ridiculous like 2 months playing time. Can still remember the opening song, the thrill of leveling and the agony of losing a level...I even had an online gf I met on there back when it was viewed as shameful to hook up with people online. I was in a pretty big guild on our server and splintered off with some other players and had a weeks-long war (which we lost), fighting on the mainland, Kunark and the moon iirc.

Every now and then I hear some place has old EQ free to play but no.

I think getting bored of Everquest was a good thing because from then on I never wasted time on MMOs again. WoW, DAoC, all the poo poo that came after couldn't promise the experience.

e. Actually, thinking back I probably logged more time on that game than two months. It was very consuming.

games that are janky as poo poo and beat you in the face repeatedly until you figure it out are some of the best. there's more to it than just being hard and obtuse, they have to be hard and obtuse to get you to think in a specific way and that way of thinking has to open up self directed gameplay opportunities. that is completely anathema to contemporary game design

STALKER is widely considered an incredible game and if you look at it through the lens of contemporary AAA games it is really, REALLY bad. it's paced obtusely, the storyline is borderline secondary to the entire experience despite being the only explicit breadcrumb trail through the game, your item progression is feast or famine, and its just missing plenty of things that you just expect a video game of its kind to have. but its really good. its everything far cry wants to be, but will never be fundimentally.

eve online is that way except cranked all the way to 11. its the game everyone wants their open world MMO to be except they mistake the core of its design philosophy for bad game design and miss the mark time and time again. i mean i wont disagree but theres a reason its got a devoted fanbase, its because your fancy autism chariot is easily murderable by someone in a cheap ship who knows what they're doing and multiply that by fleets of 10+ people. there isn't fast travel for a reason. there is no linear progression and cost isn't related to performance. all of those things are why the game is what it is and they basically break the rules of game design everyone goes by

Well it's also because the time sink and intellectual investment required of an adult with even minor responsibilities is way higher than what the average person can deal with. You're not wrong, but remember that MMOs like EvE sustain via communal playing and while STALKER is acclaimed it isn't a hot seller.

Modern "roguelikes" and Dark Souls find success because the former can be played in bursts and iteration is the core internal mechanic, and the latter revolves around mastering a few tough mechanics with an option for creativity via weapons, items, and magic.

It felt like it was designed in a boardroom, you know? Like, they had "blizzards style" and then just threw dissonant poo poo on the wall and the end product made no sense at all.

BUT

Then I played it... and it was actually super fun. Like, Tracers mechanic alone sold me on the game. You get to play a shooter with a character that can blink twice and then rewind time for herself. That poo poo is a million times cooler than the Call of Duty garbage that is getting so stale now

Agreed. It's gotten to point where I seek out games I overlooked when I was younger specifically because I'm looking for something janky and weird that doesn't handle like a contemporary AAA game. poo poo like God Hand had obvious challenges (camera always being behind your back) but offered ways to provide information to the player that forced them to cobble together a method of reacting to what the game throws at you (radar system to catch enemies from the back and sides).

Modern game design "guidelines" are somewhat nice because I guess you avoid some "annoying" things in games but sometimes those annoying aspects are what made the game engaging and unique. I've actually stopped playing OW recently and switched to trying several clones of it just because they offer more options for your characters. Not to mention I'm tired of being teased with Doomfist and I don't have the autism to care about dumb poo poo like events/costumes/dances/whatever. The game actually has very little going for it if you hate lootbox poo poo.
