Yep. They use infrared sensors and edge sensors to detect the opposing robot and push it out while not falling out itself. As you can see, they don't necessarily work perfectly (which is part of the fun).

Friction points can be a pain in the rear end in some cars even if you know how to drive stick.

You probably couldn't. Using the clutch and the accelerator in the right amounts in basically trial and error to start with. Given the situation as well.

I could see how it could be a problem if you had no concept of it whatsoever, but it's very easy if you don't care about the clutch or looking smooth. Just give it a ton of gas and slowly and steadily release the clutch. Done, you just took off with your new stolen ride.

Here in the states, we have FIRST Robotics. They do different competitions every year, but with considerably larger robots.
