quote:

Nayana, a web hosting provider based in South Korea, announced it is in the process of paying a three-tier ransom demand of nearly $1 million worth of Bitcoin, following a ransomware infection that encrypted data on customer' servers.

The ransomware infection appears has taken place on June 10, but Nayana admitted to the incident two days later, in a statement on its website.

Attackers asked for an initial ransom payment of 550 Bitcoin, which was worth nearly $1.62 million at the time of the request.

After two days of negotiations, Nayana staff said they managed to reduce the ransom demand to 397.6 Bitcoin, or nearly $1 million.

You might be. I have pfSense running on a J3355. The 4 port Intel NIC I bought for it was nearly as expensive as the motherboard and CPU. We're talking like $110 for everything before case and power supply. Why not do something more interesting with the r410 like load ESXi and virtualize some stuff. Hell, even virtualize pfSense, but don't run pfSense bare metal on a Xeon.

Yeah, this big time. The J3355 consumes around 13 watts. It would be much lower if I didn't have it hooked up to a 400 watt 80% bronze power supply. Probably in the 6-8 watt range.

Xeons of the vintage in the R410 pull like 5x that. In the long run it might matter.

Barely - some security fixes might get there but not many... although if you're just running XP in a VM, whatever.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/end-support-windows-xp-and-vista

Last update March 28, 2017 unless there are newer ones missing release notes.

XP is on the extended support release since March, so it gets much less frequently updated. they'll get security updates through September, then they're as hosed as they should have been years ago

vista is the same
