if climate change isn't a thing then why "clean coal"?

Coal burning generates sulphur compounds, not sure if power gen coal is the same as coking coal but there are also carcinogens like benzene toluene and xylene, there are radioactive byproducts, mercury and so on which has been collected and concentrated in the coal. You're burning a solid and it doesn't all vanish so there is particulate matter released. Think of the grimy black buildings from the industrial revolution. I don't think "clean coal" changes the coal at all, rather it changes the processes to try and mitigate these pollutants. It's just easier and cheaper to not burn coal at all, though.

Forgot to write about why these pollutants are bad. Sulphur dioxide released into the air, in contact with water becomes sulphuric acid and you end up with acid rain. This was a big pollution scare when I was a kid growing up in the eighties but you don't hear about it so much now since everyone is moving toward using cleaner processes. Mercury released into the environment so increased levels are detected in fish and animals, it doesn't do them any good and then it enters the food chain. Black grime coating plants and trees blocks light and kills plants, etc. None of this stuff is mysterious or debatable so they can't pretend it is controversial like they do for climate change.

And part of what prompted people to move to cleaner processes was the introduction of an Emissions Trading Scheme.

ATO fraud case: Adam Cranston considered sending 'gangsters' to protect cars, police allege

Adam Cranston, the son of former deputy tax commissioner Michael Cranston, talked of sending "gangsters" to protect luxury Porsches and other "toys", police have alleged.

Intercepted telephone calls between Adam Cranston and his associates were detailed in documents tendered to the NSW Supreme Court, where the Australian Federal Police have been seeking details of the 30-year-old's financial affairs.

The AFP alleged he was a "controlling mind" in a syndicate that committed tax fraud worth $144 million.

"I've bought three Porsche cars in the space of like two months," Cranston allegedly told an associate, Christopher Guillan.

"I'm pretty sure I'm going to get access to some f**king new toys now."

In the phone taps, Adam Cranston allegedly considered having a new Porsche Cayenne, worth $324,000, flown to Australia.

"Should I pay them 15 grand to air freight my Cayenne; to get [it] in the next five days?" he allegedly asked Guillan.

"Yes, I'm not even joking," Guillan allegedly replied.

"If you're going to have to wait another four months, yes."

'There be f**kin' some gangsters coming around'

Police alleged Adam Cranston had control of a fleet of luxury vehicles that were registered in the name of G&T Holdings, of which Guillan was the sole director.

The vehicles included three Porsches, a Ford Mustang, a Ducati motorbike, and two Subaru BRZ coupes.

The phone taps revealed Adam Cranston allegedly became concerned his cars could be claimed by Guillan's fiancee if the couple ever broke up.

"I don't trust Fiona as far as I can throw her," Cranston allegedly said.

He allegedly said he would have few legal options if Guillan's partner ever made a claim.

"I can't do anything. Trust me, there be f**kin' some gangsters coming around I can tell you that much, but that's as far as I could go."

"She'd have to leave the country."

There is no suggestion Guillan's fiancee was aware of the alleged criminal activity, that she planned to leave Guillan, or that she ever acted in a manner that was untrustworthy.

"My assets are now at risk," Adam Cranston allegedly said to Guillan, telling the 29-year-old if he got married it could be "open slather".

"If Fiona has 50 per cent access to that company, which are my assets, I would cut sick."

Guillan allegedly replied: "Well, we're not getting married anytime soon mate."

Adam Cranston replied: "Well it doesn't matter. She's still de facto... so you're cooked on those grounds."

The matter returns to court on July 6.

He seems to be saying that by wanting equal education for everyone and wanting students who perform poorly to have enough attention to get them through schooling, is resulting in everyone having a mediocre education. Basically arguing that if there are 100 units of teacher time and each unit relates to a fixed improvement in student achievement, but focusing on bringing underachieving students to the median, high achieving students are becoming...less...brilliant? I guess he's simultaneously arguing that most people are idiots and shouldn't go to school, and that (if I'm interpreting his car analogy) those who can afford education should be able to pick the best education for their child? Maybe he's advocating complete privatization of the education sector.

Police stay silent in trial over eight-year-old Aboriginal boy locked in wagon

Two police officers accused of leaving an eight-year-old Aboriginal boy alone in the back of a police wagon for about an hour have declined to testify at their own trial.

Senior constables Michael Writer and Brian Quinn are charged with neglect of duty and leaving a child in a motor vehicle causing emotional distress.

On Friday, Lismore Local Court heard that the pair picked up two eight-year-old boys at Coraki, New South Wales, in April last year following a complaint of malicious damage.

One boy was dropped at his aunt's house, and the police officers told their colleagues they had left the other boy at the home of a family friend.

When the boy's mother arrived at the police station about an hour later, she told the station sergeant her son was not there.

Sergeant Dean Childs told the court he then found the boy still locked in the back of the police wagon.

Local youth worker Luke Hayward, who had accompanied the boy's mother to the police station, told the court they both became emotional as they saw the boy helped from the police wagon.

"I was quite frustrated and emotional myself," Mr Hayward said.

"I told [Sergeant Childs] this was un-f**king acceptable, that police need to make and effort to build relationships with Aboriginal communities and poo poo like this doesn't help."
Mr Hayward told the court the boy emerged from the wagon with trembling lips and clothes stuck to his body but paramedic Sally Butler, who examined the child, told the court he was suffering no physical ill effects.

"He was quite shy, and a little bit disinterested in us, but otherwise acting like a normal happy child," Ms Butler said.

The family friend the two officers told colleagues they had left the boy with told the court Senior Constable Writer was at her house, but that was to deliver a warning to her own sons.

"He told my boys not to go to town or he'd boot them up the arse," she said.

Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Lindsay told the court the two accused men declined to be interviewed by investigating officers on legal advice.

The case has been adjourned until September 13, when it is likely a verdict will be delivered.

I hope these fuckers get torched when they inevitably get let off.
