Interestingly, the Tokiwa is one of the oldest if not the oldest active ship in the fleet, first commissioned as an armored cruiser in 1897 and then converted to a minelayer after the Washington Naval Treaty.

A very boring day today. But the carriers are out and I have a load more ships beginning to move fuel.

Does the US have a comparable fleet roaming around somewhere, and if so where would it be?

wedgekree
Feb 20, 2013
The US theoretically has the Hornet, several CVE/CVL's, and a number of Battleships left. We've seen the American Battleships do shore bombardment raids a few times. I think Hornet still exists, it should be in theatre and hasn't been on any kill lists yet (or maybe even seen in any engagements). the USN/RN is likely operating a number of small independent groups that probably are a CVE and some escorts, an dpossibly a separate Battleship grou or two. Theoretically? This is from someone with no clue of the game.

By this point, the US should have the Essex, Intrepid, Yorktown, and Lexington in commission as well.

Misread a chart, hold on

Edit: Make that the Essex, Yorktown, Lexington, and Bunker Hill.

These long range raids are annoying.

The carriers arrive to kill.

Those AP's are good kills.

More raiders take Ocean Island.

Time to ready the kill list. We should have some new entries this week.

Finally caught up after reading through the entire Allied game, and now I have to wait day by day for the slow heroic rearward advance of the Empire's mighty military. A question about the A Bombs in this game: when Grey dropped them, he would have had to wait 2 weeks for the second one to be ready. Can you stockpile them so you could drop 2 or more simultaneously? Also, are the subject to the wildly erratic effectiveness other strategic bombing seemed to have, or is it just "everything in Tokyo is gone now" trigger?

Yes, you don't have to use them immediately, and you can stock up on them if you want. It's just that there's no victory penalty to using up to two, so there's no reason to "wait" if you can already fire off one, and maybe that'll score enough points to end the game immediately anyway.

Technically there's still some randomness/simulationism built into the thing, but the "stats" on its destructive power are so high that it's pretty much guaranteed to still wipe out the industry in whatever hex you drop it in.

That's a nice number of damaged planes.

Time to start the party!

This is the next couple of months of trickle kills.

Do you have to ship the bomb(s) from the States a la the Indianapolis, or is it kind of magically re-baseable? This is a grog game, so I assume the former. If that's the case, could Grey stave off nuclear annihalation by getting lucky and sinking the transport vessel?

I saw another task force one hex from Rabaul.

The Carriers find the big girl again.

Another fighter is gunned down.

Chinese troops are forced to fall back.

They then throw away another five thousand. This force is doing its job at killing Chinese.

The Manoora was Australia's first (and as far as I can tell only) Landing Ship, Infantry. She was designed to carry landing craft and disgorge a shitload of troops really quickly when she got in range of an invasion beach. She could carry up to 1250 troops at a time, so we probably didn't get her when she was fully loaded, but it's still a good get.

Perhaps, but I suspect that the Shimakaze we're looking at now is the converted Minekaze-class destroyer from 1920, and not the advanced DD launched in 1943. In real life, the older ship would have been renamed by the time the war started.

Would anybody else be able to clarify?

It's been a while, but AFAIK:

* you don't have to ship the bombs there
* but the bombs can only be dropped by the specific B-29 squadron that historically dropped them

In this context I think it should be theoretically possible to prevent the bombs from being dropped if the Allied player decides to ship the B-29s from the West Coast across the Pacific and then the Japanese player manages to sink the transports carrying them. But then I think B-29s can do air-ferry transfers from the West Coast to Pearl Harbor to Guam, etc. anyway.

Also any squadron completely destroyed can be respawned some 60 days later at the cost of a few button presses and a minor amount of political points.

Mind you i haven't always managed to get the squadron to accept new planes after it was respawned, but still technically possible.

Looks like it is the older ship, which is listed as having a destroyer transport modification like some of its sister ships.

Guess you'll have to keep waiting.

This sub pops up and fires off a single shell.

We sweep through their fighters at Tarawa.

We still take losses going in though.

We're in range of air cover it seems.

They can't be everywhere.

We get out there causing some damage.

A patrol boat buys it, but we take out a few avengers.

The afternoon attacks begin.

A destroyer is mauled.

Owch! That was an effective bombing run.

I think they have switched to the airfield.

Yep!

That was a brutal day! There is nothing I can do about those bombers hitting my airfield.

Historically I think it was like a flight of three B-29s.

In the game you probably should have them escorted, since the drop can still fail if the bombers get intercepted.

And again.

The carrier sweep does poorly.

We then set a light cruiser on fire.

We then do the same to a loaded troop ship!

Things get a bit hairy for a minute, but it ends well.
