Mostly the former. You don't get a lot of payday loan places in wealthy areas, and it's not because they are all budgeting fiends. You just have more wiggle room on a good salary. If a big, unexpected expense means "Cancel Disneyland this year" rather than "I guess we live in the car now" then life is a lot easier.

That's a Biden success story.

Fulchrum posted:

Well there's the answer for what the result is - anything the Dems give to them is treated as an insult and not good enough no matter what.

The thing is that unless the elected Democrats actually work to enact the policies in the platform it really is just a joke. Oh and it's not like the Centrist "let" the left write the platform. that's the result of people getting active in the organization and doing exactly what the Centrists keep telling them to do which is engage and work within the system.

The frustration comes from the fact even when they do that the Centrists continue to dismiss, deride and insult them. One of Obama's first moves was to pick Rahm Emanuel as his Chief of staff. A betrayal of the organized left that played a significant part in handing him victory (that the Centrist continue to dismiss despite continuing and mounting losses after that particular betrayal.). From here we got the Chief of Staff of the President we supported calling the collective netroots and leftist activists "loving Retards" and throwing us under the proverbial bus to try and gain support of the party who swore to do everything in their power to thwart the President's agenda.

What of substance did the left get out of the Democratic Leadership in the form of legislative victories? Or hell even respect? The ACA was a half-assed measure and the left was screaming about the flaws the entire time. Where did the Blue Dog's and Centrists bend to compromise with the left?

Now I don't blame Obama for the failures. He was working within the confines of the existing political power structure that is deeply entrenched with deep pockets. And as the first non white male President he had many more challenges to overcome than any President before him.

The funny thing is that the left is used to losing, they could accept losing the battle, what demoralized them is that after all the effort, all the doing what the centrists told them to do the people that they helped elect didn't even put up a fight for progressive causes. They can't even blame the Republicans they had full control of the house and Senate and what legislation they did pass had zero Republican support and was achieved despite their obstruction.

The political price the Centrist paid for loving over their leftist allies was loss of power because they alienated their most strident and active supporters. Say what you like about the "loony left" they are the ones with the passion. I mean really where is the passion behind with the Centrists?

Yeah the left should have voted against Trump and the GOP regardless because the lesser of two evils is preferable. But why is it that the Centrists don't think that they should change at all? They want the leftists to support them but are unwilling to compromise and work with them.

In the end it comes down to this, There is no soft right left, The Republican support comes from hard line nativists who are not reachable. The reason the left of the party is doing everything in their power to get the centrists to move to the left is that they know that and want to reach out to voters who have checked out of the process, not because they don't care but because they are unheard, because they don't believe that the Democrats will actually do things to help them. And the evidence strongly supports that belief.

Human beings are not rational creatures, we're cave people with cell phones trying to navigate a modern reality with cognitive tools evolved to survive in a hunter gatherer civilization. So expecting rationality from us is well irrational, part of why the GOP have the solid base of support they have is what ever you can say about them (admittedly most of it bad) they are passionate.

As for me, I'm trying to figure out ways to rabble rouse because I'm thinking that's what is needed. It would be really nice if my political "allies" would have my back rather than try stabbing me in it.

If I have an emergency I have a number of family members or friends that could help me out too. Regardless of where my savings are at I could probably get $1000 in an hour or two if I really needed it. Poor people tend to mostly know other poor people, so that's not happening.

And at other end, not having much wiggle room means saving up is required to, say, be able to buy their kids a birthday present or simply decent clothes. If you are a parent, would you do the "responsible" thing of having some extra money for unexpected circumstances, and have your kid suffer immediate effects of poverty that much sharper?

Partially both, although in my anecdotal experience a lot of people go "I fund my 401k, those are saving!", neglecting the fact that those are *long term* savings and won't help you if you break your leg tomorrow.

E. This assuming they are middle class and have money they could theoretically save rather than sustinence working

Also, people who are dead broke are more likely to spend their money immediately before it is gone because that is what they are used to. If you live paycheck to paycheck and get a sudden small windfall you aren't going to be throwing it in the bank because saving isn't what you do. That's why dead broke people sometimes have wide screen TVs. It's not a failing on their part as much as a lack of financial education and flexibility.

speaking from personal experience, poor people try to save as much as they can, but at the same time it's mentally excruciating to try to subsist on 0 leisure funds. A lot of the time "I'l never get sick" really means "I can't afford to be sick, and I don't want to face that reality".

You can't really be good with money if the only way you can be good with money relies on your children having no toys, never going out, never having any luxury items to leisure time, etc.
