The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

It's so disorienting switching to an AA hero after playing a caster. I keep forgetting to stop moving.

In alpha/beta and maybe even after launch, a lot of heroes used icons from their other games. So Warcraft tended to use ancient Warcraft 3 and WoW icons, Starcraft had some old SC icons, and Diablo 3 pretty much had their kit icons ported over.

Yeah, but they grabbed all of 'em. Every single class's ability icons - even the ones that weren't converted into abilities or talents. They just said "gently caress it" and tossed 'em all in there.

TIL you don't have to hunt down new skins/mounts/etc in your collection to inspect them after getting them in a box. Of course you could always right click the category and "mark items as seen", but Halo showed me that this little star next to the filters:

Not the objective I'm going for, but ok.

Also just threw a TL game in a really funny way. We were stomping, it was lvl 18 to 15, and we went to poke their core. Doorbell rang, pinged "retreat", went and got it. I was gone a sum total of 20 seconds, since the Jehova's Witness just wanted to hand me an invitation to a thing.

Team wipes, then we start staggering deaths and losing objectives and end up throwing it. Gee, I wonder if our coordination would be easier if the we had merged our two Discord groups instead of them being too lazy to join ours or invite us to theirs? :thunk:

Is it common consensus that Rag is weak because I feel like I see him in an enormous number of my games and he usually has a sizeable impact on the outcome especially if the player is in any way competent at taking over bases at the right times. I've never at any point thought of him as weak or ineffective.

His kit doesn't lend itself to any comp and he's got quite a few popular counters. People are still adjusting, but his Q nerf was pretty relevant.

That's a fair point. I feel like he's a good generalist though that covers a lot of bases even if he doesn't have strong synergy with other picks. I feel like Rag on my team or against me is usually managing lanes well, and can really turn a fight over hardcore if your team tries to base siege him and he takes the base and flips the fight. I don't personally like playing him, but I usually like having one on my team and often do.

Ya, but the problem is that if you want a melee assassin, which you don't necessarily want at this stage of the game, Genji, Illidan, Thrall, Kerrigan, and probably Malthael are gonna do more work in general. That why I said Rag is mediocre. He's not bottom of barrel, like Cassia or Butcher, but there's almost always a couple better choices.

He seems like he fills a melee specialist role to me, I don't really see him as an assassin at all and I'm not really sure why he's ever had that designation given the way they have classified other heroes. Like I don't think of him as analogous to the other heroes you mentioned and agree with your comments on fit.

I think I must be doing something wrong with Johanna, because she seems so straightforward but she's consistently my worst Tank. Any recommended builds ( https://www.heroesfire.com/hots/talent-calculator/johanna#hCCV still relevant?)?

Or, can someone identify the kind of comp you would pick her for if I weren't just dicking around in QM? Like, I gather she's supposed to be more of a late-pick, response-to-something-else hero, but I'm not sure what that thing would be.

Johanna is the wave clear tank, you pick her to make your four man/three man have really good waveclear. She has decent peel, is good versus auto-attack comps. You also need someone else in the comp to have initiation.

Try this instead: https://www.heroesfire.com/hots/talent-calculator/johanna#h9Wd

Use Falling Sword for re-engagement and peel, not initiation (you don't want to be in midair when the fight starts or a teammate could get chunked or even killed before you land).

Battle Momentum is important if you want to keep hitting buttons in a fight, although taking Eternal Retaliation + Conviction instead is also viable.

She's the second-hardest-to-kill hero in the game after Chen, you draft her when you need to be able to walk into range of the enemy occasionally and have it be no big deal. Also it's worth co-signing that she has good waveclear, which most tanks don't.

rag chat

The secret to Rag is that they should have categorized him as a specialist. He can hold down a solo lane, wave clear, and use his trait to force the enemy to stop a siege, which "melee assassins" generally don't. A better comparison would be Nazeebo, Xul or Azmodan. His meteor talents are seriously underrated; if the enemy team comp won't let you play aggressively, you can hang back and poke, and after 16 it's good for killing retreaters too. There are even some times you still want Lava Wave despite the nerfs; it provides a global split push threat similar to what Falstad or a late-game Azmodan can do.

Lava wave is pretty sweet for clearing a lane when the enemy manages to grab multiple camps, or on spiders to push yours up. But man the range on sulfurus is great for sniping fleeing teams

Ragnaros is an Assassin with a Specialist gimmick. He's a reasonably powerful generalist like Thrall is, but lacks a specific focus that makes him effective at a single job (compare him to Greymane or Kael, for instance). He fits into nearly any team composition because he has a good mix of poke, burst, and sustain. Ragnaros's problem is that he relies very, very heavily on talents and gimmicks because his stats are kinda lovely.

Fully kitted out, a halfway competent Q build Ragnaros can handle a 1v2 without much difficulty (and in certain cases, 1v3s). However, that requires a fully farmed up Level 1 talent (that requires last-hitting in a game that's designed to not have last-hitting), at least a Level 7 talent, and ideally a Level 13 talent. A W build Ragnaros (aka The Saucy Meatball) is almost entirely poke-oriented. Granted, there's much to be said for builds that allow you to poke enemies down and then swoop in for the kill, but other characters do that much more effectively (Greymane and Cassia come to mind, although I'm sure there are others). An E build Ragnaros is basically a weird Q build that needs 16 to be worth a gently caress.

Ragnaros's Heroics, meanwhile, have their own problems. Sulfuras Smash (aka the Good And Correct Ult For Tryhards) requires a lot of precision and coordination from your team for maximum efficiency, something that isn't always available. It has the highest potential to do work, but you'll be threading the needle to make it happen. Meanwhile Lava Wave is, in a word, okayish. There's a lot to be said for the ability to wipe a lane clean, and if you somehow catch even a single enemy Hero in it the damage output is pretty good. However, it's extremely telegraphed, pretty easy to dodge, and its primary use case (a countermeasure against Braxis Holdout Zerg Waves) was harshly undercut shortly after Ragnaros was released.

Molten Core has the potential to do things like counteract heavy Objective pushes or effects. However, I've never actually seen it happen because dumbass Ragnaroses (Ragnarii?) blow it on stupid poo poo before the push actually occurs (like using it to try to snag skulls from Infernal Shrine minions instead of using it to defend against the Punisher).
