I know you get more villagers daily by interacting with other players, but I can't recall if you get a new one daily.

I'm assuming Greyarc's using one villager to avoid snapping game difficulty in half. Some Norende weapons will carry you for a long time before falling off in usefulness.

It's no problem getting villagers, I just haven't wanted to bother with the online stuff for this playthrough. Otherwise Norende would be getting clogged up with Nemeses, at least if my previous game was anything to go by. The single extra villager I have is from an accidental Streetpass.

Yeah, I'm saving buying the Norende stuff for when it's not too overpowered.

This game is breakable in so many different ways, it'd be great for a challenge run LP. For me, though, I am mainly interested in showing off the story. I'll do what it takes to beat the bosses, but I don't feel any particular desire to break the game over my knee. Though for the last chapter and final final final boss, you're pretty much forced to.

No, because their appearances are basically randomized. There's also no story involved with them, and they and their drops aren't included in D's Journal.

Provided everything's going well later on, though, I'm planning to show off the bonus dungeon. The demo would also be a possibility if people are curious.

I have so much trouble with streetpass because there's noone who lives nearby who randomly carries their DS around or that plays the same games, so even when I go out of my way to keep my DS on and in my pocket nothing happens. If there's one thing I dislike about the game, it's that, while you have the choices of a few optimal playstyles, after a certain point, suboptimal playstyles that might be more fun just become completely unviable. Bravely Default suddenly becomes far less fun if I'm stuck with a party setup where, for example, three of my characters are perpetually keeping my party invulnerable and the fourth one is slowly plinking away at the enemy.

I think that's the reason many of my favorite memories of this game are in the first two chapters, which we've now seen.

It's true. Low level jobs aren't helpful and you need to optimise your characters for some thing. The offensive characters need to be geared towards either magic or physical. You can't be half baked.

But at the same time, the ways to break the game are vast. At the end, you'll just be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options you have.

Rusalka was the first major roadblock for a lot of people playing the game for the first time (myself included) back when it first came out. Seep's damage is completely bonkers, and if you survive it you suddenly have 4x as many attacks coming your way. On Hard it may 1-shot you straight through Default. The other catch is that a lot of attacks in BD that look like they're magical in nature actually do physical damage instead. Deluge is one of them, which comes as a nasty surprise if you've been trying to buff your magic defense instead. It's a good fight to break out any lightning-based attack items you've got lying around. Their fixed damage is the most reliable method of dealing with the clones.

I dunno, I played around with a few different fun setups for most of the game. It was really the final chapter fights that required some fine-tuning for specific loadouts. There were only two archetypes I stumbled into that flat don't work mechanically but we have yet to run into elements of those builds yet.

Red mage is bar none the best class in the game.

People have already mentioned the BP manipulation but it's hard to describe just how absolutely broken it is in practice. With the final tier of Black Mage here's what a red mage specced into red mage does:

Poisons the entire party twice, generating four BP and allowing every party member to Brave to 0 should they desire.

It can then case Poisona using white mage 1 to cure the entire party of poison, and can use esuna to cure the entire party of all status effects should they so desire.

Finally after doing this it still has a spare cast and has mass group cast.

If you have a red mage running time as a spare job then it can use this spare turn to cast reraise on the entire party.

So in a single turn, with a return of neutral BP red mage grants 12 BP to other party members, cures all status ailments and casts reraise on everyone (Or any time mage spell). The value from that is impossibly good and there's a good reason this class got hit by the nerf bat.

The weird thing is that it's a really powerful class until you start finding fourth level black and white magic since it learns level 3 almost as quickly as the other two classes.

Entry 43: The Water, Awakened

Another story ended. Despite the losses, good has prevailed and another land is saved from Eternia's grimly comical evil machinations.

So long, Florem.

One quick no-encounters, poison-filled run through the Miasma Woods later, we're back at Flor-Cheim's main port.

Please.

......

Agnès and Tiz are distracted. Even Edea is unusually quiet.

Airy's in a good mood, at least. We're halfway through the crystals! How hard could the other two be?

For the first time during the game, the water outside the Inner Sea is clear. Time to celebrate! Right guys?

Agnès... Forgive me!

For what?

For what happened to Olivia... I am partly to blame.

You may have fought for the duchy, but you've nothing to do with the one who killed Olivia.

But I do...

That monster... The one they call the witch, Victoria. I knew of her.

......

Before, when that man attacked. Alternis. You knew him.

Better than a simple soldier of the Sky Knights ought.

I hadn't intended to hide who I am... But I should have told you sooner.

My father is grand marshal of the Eternian Forces. Leader of the Council of Six.

What!?

If the council is in charge, and he leads the council... Your father's the head of the whole duchy!?

Then the order to assassinate the vestal of water came from your father?

I don't know. I don't know... I can't blame you if you blame me for it, though.

You don't... You...

You intend to stand there and feign heartache and innocence both!? Perhaps it was you who communicated Olivia's hiding place to the duchy!

That's not--I wouldn't!

Perhaps you were a spy this whole time, deceiving us even now.

Agnès, stop.

We fought this far together. That means something. Don't doubt it.

......

Excuse me. I need rest. I ask that you leave me alone awhile.

......

...We're crossing into open water.

To recap, the party found out Edea was the grand marshal's daughter back when they were chasing down Knight Heinkel. Later, after the showdown with Dark Knight Alternis, they found out the leaders of Eternia are the Council of Six. It's been clear to them throughout that Edea's father is high-ranking in Eternia, they just didn't know (until now) he occupied the highest rank.

It's more a psychological difference than anything at this point, but if there's any one person to blame for Eternia's misbehaviours, the buck stops at Edea's father.

We've got the whole ocean open to us now.

The ship can stop at docks, but most areas have beach landings.

Getting random encounters while on a Final Fantasy-style vessel always seems so wrong. Why are animals in JRPG worlds so rabid as to attack a ship?

Unusual for an eagle to be out over open ocean.

Trust me, as soon as these creatures are documented, I'm never fighting them again.

As if sea travel isn't bad enough already. I wonder if Luxendarc's oceans are calmer than Earth's due to the Water Crystal's influence?

It's a fish. A floating, highly aggressive fish.

Did the party pull it up while fishing or something?

Of course they dredged up a zombie. The party is terrible at fishing.

He's still got his little piratey bandana on, ha ha.

Aaaah okay guys, forget the fish, mealy bread and salted meat will have to do.

Yeah, I'd say we're done interacting with the local wildlife. How did all these creatures survive the ocean rotting, anyway?

Let's take a breather on solid ground. Here's yet another mysterious obelisk. This is the continent of Eternia, but there's no way to access the interior at the moment.

We can also get to the northeastern landmass, which has a very odd shape... Nothing much to do here now, either.

Let's take a peek around northern Eisen on our own.

Uh

Waugh! What's happening!?

The same event will occur if you try landing at Eternia's main beach, so no skipping over to corner Edea's dad and ask what his deal is. Considering Victor/Victoria's powers, it probably wouldn't end well for the party, anyway.

Eisen has a western beach, too, but trying to land there, well...

As in the Florem area, Ringabel objects in his own odd manner. At least swimsuits make more sense here than at an inland forest.

There's one last place to visit with our newly freed transport before we continue on.

It's been a while since we were back.

We're all hoping the vestal's efforts will see the world restored to normal.

This lady still has a crush on Ringabel. Afraid the strange mutterings are still a thing.

Wind and water going bad were easy to notice, but there hasn't been any big effect on fire that we've seen so far.

I'm assuming grandma is the one puttering around the inn all the time. What's she have to say?

I'm afraid all the life's drained out of the innkeep since losing Owen.

Oh. :smith:

Can't imagine Caldisla smelled great back at the start of the game. Nothing says fresh new adventure like rotting fish.

They've carved this grave since we were here last. Continuing up the hill...

I went and saw the chasm for myself. I'd heard it was big, but I wasn't prepared for that...

That was your doing? Oh, bless you!

Despite Eternia's earlier attempt to burn down/destroy the government of Caldisla, Caldisla appears not too worried about reinvasion. Luckily, so far Eternia seems wholly uninterested in reconquering countries once they've lost hold of them.

Seems the innkeep is still weighing heavily on His Highness's mind.

Inside the castle, the soldiers who stepped up to fill in the shoes of those who died during Eternia's massacre are getting used to their work.

You all are something else. I can't even imagine going on a journey to save the world.

So, we have you to thank for the oceans, too? You lot are amazing!

For the party, it's less a matter of choice than of survival.

Captain Owen's poor father hasn't been himself lately. I worry for the man...

We were able to help everyone else in Caldisla. If only we could do something for the innkeep.

Through Norende Ravine, the Great Chasm is unchanged. I'm assuming Tiz's new Norende is off around the corner prospering and cutting new deals in grimy backalleyways.

A rare, mythical item hundreds of years old which is destroyed after a single use? That's a good new dealer Norende's brought in. Tiz leaves satisfied.

We've delayed long enough. West from the mouth of the Flor-Cheim Inner Sea, and off the party goes to see what they can see.

It is kind of amazing that they're willing to trust Edea, and it's probably directly tied to Edea being more thirsty for the blood of Eternians than anyone. Literally from the moment she signed up, she's been slaughtering her former comrades, including childhood friend Einheria, with very little protest or remorse. The only reason we didn't kill her father's close friends Victor or Victoria is because they retreated (or, rather, they were on the verge of victory when Victoria got ill).

Entry 44: The Grand Old Ship

Sailing, sailing over the--

Looks like no one's up for singing at the moment.

-one! Feast your eyes upon this!

......

Agnès turns to look.

In the middle of the ocean blue, days west of Florem, the party finds their next, unexpected destination.

Here's a fun game: Chapter 1 was about capitalism, and Chapter 2 covered women's issues. How long will it take to guess Chapter 3's hot topic, and what corrupted personifications will the party punch to death as a ham-handed analogy for justice this time?

A ship, perhaps? But it's too big...

And it's not moving.

I'll wager the women there frolic around in bathing suits all day long.

In your dreams, Ringabel...

Ringabel is a man committed to one joke, and damned if he's going to abandon it three chapters in.

Unacceptable. We've no time for distractions. We must awaken the Fire Crystal.

I am the one at the helm here, no? I'll make the call. Thank you very much.

......

Harsh.

Being so openly mutinous is out of character for Ringabel. Given everyone's state of mind, stuck on a boat together for days at least, Ringabel's true intention is likely to force Agnès to take a breather -- and give the rest of them a break as well.

Flirting with women is just icing on the not-mealy-biscuits cake.

The vessel appears to be friendly, and Ringabel gets permission to dock.

Is it a ship? An island?

Have we chanced upon the forbidden sanctuary of the bikini tribe!?

Here's hoping they're cannibals with a taste for philanderer.

From its look, it has to be a ship. Some luxury cruise liner, maybe?

A luxury what? Crew who? What are you talking about, Edea?

It's like a super-duper huge boat with every extravagance imaginable!

Every cabin's a king's bedchamber, every meal a five-star feast, you name it, they have it aboard!

Whoa, such a thing really exists!? And here I've never seen anything bigger than a crabbing ship!

Tiz, please. You're getting bumpkin all over my feral bikini woman fantasy.

As if depression wasn't bad enough, the party's come down with a bad case of cabin fever.

With the Eschalot secured, they stumble over each other to get out and explore the new place.

Reassuring verb.

I can feel us rocking. It's floating, alright.

......

Edea, Agnès, and Tiz walk on.

Ringabel takes a moment to realize they're gone.

Luckily Tiz's red outfit stands out in a crowd. And it looks like someone else has spotted the team.

Then the seas must have cleared up everywhere, and not just here. Excellent news. Say, have any of you seen a lad by the name of Zatz?

He's hurt, and supposed to be staying off his feet, but he wandered off. If you see him, can you bring him back to the tavern?

He's a scrawny, fidgety little fellow, so you can't miss him. Thanks in advance.

A few seconds onboard, and we've already met a friendly face gotten a fetch quest dumped on us by a complete stranger.

Let's get on the good side of the resident barkeep and hunt this fellow down.

Like Florem, the ship's divided across two outdoor areas. Every town so far has had three screens total (not counting special areas like the Grand Mill or DeRosa's lab).

Maybe we arrived at a bad time.

Datz? Any relation to this Zatz guy we're looking for?

Am I the only one to think there are fewer people about? Has the shaking driven them off?

How did this ship survive while the water crystal was out of order? It'd be no surprise some people set out for dry land as soon as the water cleared up. This place is lucky they didn't turn to dehydration/starvation and rioting.

The lady who gave the fetch quest is the proprietress of this tavern. Maybe she can give more info on the missing person.

Not much business at this hour.

Why are you treating us like your best friends? How do you make money?

At least with Karl the Innkeep it made sense to care for a newly homeless orphan and the people who tried to save his son.

"And best of all, everything's free!"

Let's take the proprietress up on her offer and help ourselves to the stock.

Also known as Dionysus. In short, he's a patron god of drink, free love, and unimpeded id.

Don't mind us we're just paying for our tab by cleaning up the pub.

Who dropped this? A worshiper from Eisenberg, maybe?

We're done in the tavern. Heading back out...

Considering the whole rotted water thing, it's lucky this place's still floating at all.

The party continues their search onto another section of the ship. Ahead, they spot a rat-like man talking excitedly.

We need your help! Anything will do: resources, manpower... Please aid us. I've traveled far to make this plea.

The old guys stare apathetically into space.

......

Yeah, he's not getting anywhere. The bearded elder twins eventually walk away.

"Little"? You're about eight inches in height, Airy. Anyway, he's still milling around nearby, so it's worth a shot.

But first, market.

"And all the food and drink's free!"

Grandship's so-called "Sleeping Council" is infamous for never getting anything done.

All considered, the ship is holding up remarkably well at the moment. You know, despite the mass exodus and sinking into the ocean thing.

There are all kinds of shops here.

The ship must get lots of traders on their way between the continents. Let's take a look.

Probably leftover from a pirate crew that tried to attack Grandship.

Osafune was an area in Japan once famous for making swords. No doubt mythril steel isn't as great as the original method, but this version will make do.

"Comes with a souvenir bloodstain from the original owner"

The adventurer has a real poetic side.

Now to see the guy from earlier.

You wouldn't happen to be Zatz, would you?

Yeah, who's asking?

The tavern proprietress wanted us to find you. Let's go.

...Alright then. I'm coming. What a mess...

Back to the tavern.

What were you thinking, roaming around in that state!?

Like I said, it's not that bad. Just a little bruise on the ribs, that's all...

Aid. We need their support. I'm from the city of Eisenberg, far to the west of here.

Eisenberg... That's where the Fire Crystal is.

That's right. There was an uprising, and now we're in the middle of a civil war.

So these Shieldbearers are the faction you're aligned with?

That's right. The Shieldbearers have served as the protectors of Eisenberg for centuries.

But a few years ago, a group called the Swordbearers rebelled. We've been at war ever since. They are but few in number, truth be told...

What? Why are the Shieldbearers losing to a smaller force?

The Swordbearers we can handle, but they have powerful foreign mercenaries on their side.

They wouldn't happen to call themselves the Black Blades, would they?

Yeah, that's them. Wait...are you with those mercenaries as well!?

Edea, are these Black Blade mercenaries linked to the Eternian Forces?

Yes... The Black Blades is the moniker of the first division of the Eternian Forces...my master's unit...

...... Zatz, can you tell us what happened to the fire vestal? We heard she had perished...

Yeah, the Swordbearers got hold of her around three years ago.

Assassinated. When the bloody conflict reached an impasse, the Swordbearers raided the Temple of Fire.

Sacrilege! What of the vestaling, the fire vestal's successor?

There was one, but she met the same fate...

How awful...

It falls to me, then... We must hurry to the temple.

You're going to the Temple of Fire? You won't get anywhere near it now, I'm afraid.

A few weeks ago Mount Karka erupted, and the whole temple is a sea of lava now.

Nevertheless, we must find a way... Let us hurry to Eisenberg.

I don't suppose you could take me with you? My friends are waiting for my return.

Have you given up on finding support here?

The war will be over before too long. I can't afford to wait any longer.

Are you okay with us taking him aboard, Agnès?

Very well.

This sure did work out nicely. Sounds like the Shieldbearers are about to get their own four-man personal army.
