There have also been a couple of spiritual successors, at least one of which I believe was also run by the guy who's the inspiration for Bash. WOW and Wrestlicious being probably the most notable ones. (I may remember WOW more than most because it got a decent amount of play in the Apter mags)

In a year where Lana is still a thing and Jinder Mahal is WWE Champion, this show is a sobering (hilarious?) reminder that the whole racial stereotypes in wrestling thing hasn't significantly changed in decades.

I loved the idea that they were "Deconstructing" Racial stereotypes when they weren't doing that all. The most they did was giving Welfare Queen 3-4 yelled lines of justification at the very end of the episode. It's a dramedy that doesn't make The Subject untouchably holy like "I'm Dying Up Here" does with standup. Wrestling is transcendent, but they also show it as racist and stupid.

This show is the best. I've seen up to Ep.7 and now I have the crazy conspiracy theory that Netflix is going into my brain, because a wrestling comedy show with hot ladies in 80's leotards is exactly what I was missing in my life. Also, Marc Maron is totally playing Sam as "What if Stan Lee got into women's wrestling/trashy horror films instead of comic-books?". He would be perfect for a Stan Lee biopic or comedy mini-series.

The finale is one of those things that, as a wrestling fan, is both maddening and totally authentic feeling. The episode title had me grinning, especially when Maron says it, because of course it's true. Outside of WWE at times, all US wrestling is about the babyface chasing the heel champ. And as dumb and frustrating as it is, I absolutely buy that Ruth and Debbie would for some reason decide that working the girls would make sense for their big show-stopping angle. It fits both their egos and is classic pro-wrestling hubris. I'm also a sucker for a good sports movie/let's save the theatre story which is what the show turns into EDIT: gently caress! I just got one of the in-jokes and feel like an idiot. The real GLOW had a tag team called Hollywood & Vine. And the Netflix show has Melroe... doy.... My favorite side bit was in Episode 9, when Sam was describing the plot of Mothers and Lovers to the musicians at the benefit, and I thought it was going to end up with him somehow writing the script that turned into Back to the Future, but that instead he'd gotten scooped by BTTF coming out that very week, was a great roller coaster ride of emotions.

After not liking the first few episodes the show has grown on me. On one hand I like the shorter length episodes. Not a lot of filler and makes it easier to binge. On the other hand, I'd love more background on the characters lives. This would be a perfect show for the OitNB/Lost style flashbacks. So many stories that can be told. Was this show done on a tight budget? Most of the scenes are filled in the gym or hotel. Only 10 episodes and they are shorter.

It was fun, seemed to really find the right amount of love for the source material while still being clear about how silly wrestling gimmicks can be, and since the episodes were 30 minutes it never really overstayed its welcome. Plus I love 80s music so the soundtrack bits were great. I did think it was an interesting choice to have a full opening credits sequence in only the first episode, and to replace it with a shortened title sequence in all the rest. Have any other shows done that?

I swear there's a more recent example that I just can't think of that should be really drat obvious. edit: Friends apparently had one, as did Grey's Anatomy; can't confirm as I never watched those. Ok, reading more apparently a lot of show that went into syndication received shortened intros for more ad time. edit 2: Psych was the more recent show that I was trying to think of that had a short and a long intro, but it occurs to me that it's been off the air for years now. PostNouveau posted:I so prefer the shorter episodes and season though. I just blew through this show, whereas I'm just limping through OitNB because it's such a drat slog in the middle. It felt like maybe they weren't given the usual 13, 1 hour, episode format and instead just kind of told "Here's your budget, come back with a show." and then they realized after editing that they could get everything in 10 episodes. With a show like OitNB I definitely forget the middle but that's mostly because of binge watching, however they could probably stand to cut 3-4 episodes, which translates to 3-4 hours of viewing time. This show could have easily snuck in two episodes that each focused on the girls living and training together and told the backstory of a lot of the other girls, and 2 episodes would have only added an hour onto the show and it wouldn't have dragged and I think would have helped some of the weaker characters. I recently watched Good Behavior which is also only 10 episodes. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind that is compared to shows that get the usual 13 or the full 22-24. It would certainly be nice to think that showrunners have enough control of their shows in cases like these to just say "I'm making a show and however many episodes I need to tell my story; that's what you get!" They've also mentioned that the role of Ruth was meant for someone who wasn't "conventionally attractive." That's meant they basically had to ugly up Brie to try and hide her beauty a la She's All That.

One little detail I only just realised: ep10Debbie had complained during the first show (which was what, the actual pilot before they shot the actual for-air version in the finale?) that Ruth couldn't wear red because her outfit was red. But in the final show, Zoya's gear is almost completely red (also, love the hair which is designed to be part of her evil ushanka) and Liberty Belle's outfit is mostly white with blue stars, showing their relationship has healed at least to the point where they can cooperate and compromise professionally, even if their personal relationship still isn't there yet. Also, of course Ruth booked herself to be the first GLOW champion. That's why you don't let talent book the matches!

I just finished the series. Great fun all around, and the drama parts never felt out of place. The last match being Russia-China tag team turning into a betrayal was so classic wrestling poo poo. I got a bit dissapointed that Grandma girls didn't find a new gimmick after the KKK thing. I think a couple extra episodes would been nice, just to have more time to see what stuff the other girls had to deal with. Part of my favorite stuff from the birthday party in Ep. 8 was learning more about Jenny and Sheila. They could've done more with Arthie and Reggie. Superrodan posted:I got a bit of an Aubrey Plaza vibe from Britt Baron's Justine. Nah, Aubrey would've been so much better. Maybe they can add her in the second season to be Ruth's new antagonist. Having her and Allison Brie figthing in the ring... I'd watch a whole season of just that. Even better if they try to outdo each other's gimmick. Now that I finished the season, I feel like Justine's story didn't really mesh with the rest of the show. Her turning out to be Sam's daughter from a woman he can't remember was too out of the left field, and even the writers admit it a bit with Sam saying that what else was he supposed to think when taking into account how she behaved during the whole season. I don't think her story was properly set-up, that's all. Like, what was the purpose behind her stealing Sam's camera and then putting it in the locker of the british chick? That's not the action of a daughter wanting attention from her dad, it's a "I'm jealous of this woman dating you and want her to go away" kind of action. withak posted:It's not that hard; 80s clothes and hair alone get you 90% of the way there.
