Rehabilitating the car. I installed a front splitter to mostly replace the underbody tray that I've been missing for a while. Lowered the temps by a bit. I might cut out the center section of the stock lip and place generic grille mesh in its place. The bumper is split there anyway.

Also picked up a hood from a donor CTS last week.

Your grill misalignment is triggering me. Car still looks mean though.

While not my car, helped a buddy change the power steering pump and did a quick padslap on his roommate's 2010 patriot. I dunno how the pump failed after 7 years and only 40k miles, but gently caress it, works a treat now apparently. Pad slap was due to us noticing her pads were 1/8th of an inch of pad materials remaining and the extra unused parts + core price for the power steering pump more than paid for a new set of pads. All in all it took about 4 1/2 hours of easy lacidasical work, mostly just enjoying the gorgeous weather outside and bullshitting with each other. Only really hard part was getting everything sealed properly so I stopped getting bukkaked laying under the car to put the belt back on.

That might be the aftermarket airbox pushing up on the insulation under the hood. It did become harder to close now that I think about it. I'll take a closer look at it in the morning, thanks for pointing that out.

DARKEST SKETCH
Finally got around to putting the finishing touches on my cooling system swap, and took care of a few other things as well:

- An OEM LS2 overflow bottle is now installed and the original LS1 bottle has been officially retired. I took the coolant sensor out of it and found the simplest way to bypass/eliminate it was to solder in a jumper wire and plug it back in. Once I made sure it worked, I wrapped it up in electrical tape and tucked it back away. No more warning light. No more piss ugly bottle.

- I replaced the sagged and sloppy engine and transmission mounts with a set of Hinson urethane mounts. It's astounding how much better the whole car feels now that the powertrain is more firmly planted to the chassis. The engine sits up about 1/2" higher than it used to, which really helped out when I installed the new OTR air intake kit:

Since the new configuration required opening up the factory wire loom and re-routing the connectors for the MAF and the air temp sensor, I rearranged the rest of the wiring in that area as well, and then re-covered them with new loom and copious amounts of tape.

The entire finished product, and a before pic for comparison:

It has a much "throatier" sound on acceleration and throttle response is a bit better too. I'm very happy with how this latest project turned out.

Probably San antonio. I was stationed at Fort Hood 2010-'12 and drove between there, Austin, and San antonio often. But over the last couple years I was always in San antonio.

I'm helping out at an LS shop when there's extra work for the summer. I replaced my differential bushing after work and also installed a skip-shift eliminator. Driveline is tightened up even more after the motor mounts I did a few weeks back.

Did my annual oil change today at ~12500 since the last. I'm impressed with the Mazda/Ford design teams that developed the Zetec engine - in that many miles over a year it only burned a quart, and its at a hair under 154,000 miles. I wind it out to 5k daily, its always been driven hard and I've historically run 10k+ change intervals.

Also got the deal of the century on a 2.5 gallon jug of Rotella T6 at O'Reilly - misplaced sale sign for the same quantity of T4 but without any specification and a missing price tag for the T6, clerk said gently caress it and price modified it to the sale price. Paid under $40 with sales tax, it was regularly $72 and change.

Yep, a running De Lorean and I'm not sure the year but the one on the right is an IROC. Under the car cover is a [edit: '70] Camaro with the taller grille. That I want.

Late LS motors and T56 or TR6060s in everything. I get to see a lot of on and off road C5 and C6 Vettes. The Impala has an LSA supercharger.

Had a rear tire replaced for a screw near the sidewall. Renewed the road hazard warranty for $26. The rest of the set is less than a year old but there was enough of a difference in tread depth that the car pulled toward the new tire side under acceleration, even on the freeway. The LSD thought we were turning I guess? I went back for a rotation. Not sure what to do about the mismatched fronts now, maybe I'll get another screw before I have to do something about it.

Its what they get for pencil whipping their paperwork. :colbert:

Also, jealous as gently caress. The 3.0 in the 6 burns/leaks about a quart every 3k. Granted I just chuck another quart in and change it at 6k which is 9-10 months of driving for me, but still annoying.

Grr

Over the last 2 days I have made my car look pretty:

I've got a lot of rubbing down and polishing to do on the roof in a few weeks (big roofs are hard to spray) but the rest of it shouldn't need much other than a light going over (partly to remove any bugs)

Annoyingly I seem to have had a slight paint reaction at the front of one wing which will not quite be hidden by the light fitting so I'm going to have to rub that down and redo it later. Really bizarre how it's just that one bit and the rest of the body is fine.

I'm really happy with how the colour has turned out. The shade was slightly off before and the car always looked slightly too brown.

Yeah! Bend Pak, that's the brand. The "unofficial" brand in the pictures has some differences and I'd bet the thickness of the steel is different too. And the welds. I recommend brand name Bend Pak. Nevermind your car, you're under it too.

Had to fix a bunch of hairline scratches that I just noticed today (plus a scuff on the front driver's corner where I clipped a sign at work near our swipe-in pole because some shithead decided to go out the hospital's entranceway, making the turn tighter than normal. Thought I could make it ... and no. Gonna have to redo part of the latter, the touch-up paint didn't stick great to the plastic and the rubbing compound took it right off. Everything looks a hell of a lot better, though. Not sure about those other scratches -- the dealer did a quick wash yesterday, and I wonder if maybe someone's watch or ring did it.

What can be done in the situation? Should it be blended somehow, or should I demand they try and paint the whole thing again? It is an insurance job, but insurance companies here are notoriously stingy so it'll only be fixed if I do a lot of complaining.

Just got the car back from try #2 and I'm much happier with the results. The paint guy didn't want to blend it (and from what BlackMK4 said that would have been a bad idea anyway) so resprayed the whole bumper.

New brakes time!

I just *had* to get the fancy rotors.

(They were about the same price as stock rotors, and I like the look, even if there is no real performance benefit.)

And, because I can't just, you know, slap pads and rotors on, washing all the dirt and brake dust off the calipers and abutments, so I can paint them.

Before:

Rear pads were about half done. Front pads were toast:

One was just touching the metal at the leading edge of the pad (top pad in the rear pair). That would have been the driver's side.

After a vigourous scrubbing and lots of purple cleaner:

I was surprised at how well they cleaned up. Almost all of the "rust" was brake dust. The front calipers still had most of their cad plating, and the front abutments cleaned up to shiny with a little zip of the wire wheel. The rear calipers did not appear to be coated, bu the brackets back there had most of their black paint. I just touched that up with black appliance epoxy paint.

During:

Yep, white. The KBS Motor Coater is decent stuff. It's thick, and flows out brush marks really well. Two coats got the color solid. It was still a little sticky after drying overnight, and so require careful handling to avoid dirty fingerprints, but I think that may be due to the stupid high humidity here in TX the past weekend. Breaking in the pads with a few hard stops baked it on, I bet.
I also wire brushed the rust out of the hubs and hit them with "cast iron" engine paint. the front abutments got the same.

Ended up deciding the rotors were not zinc washed or otherwise coated, and painted them with the cast iron, too:

End results:

(started getting dark. I "enhanced" the sideview pic with Imgur's tools, but there's only so much that can be done.)

I'm liking it so much better than the dirty rusty poo poo showing through my fancy wheels.
The Centric ceramic pads seem to work well. They bedded in easy, and bite well. Definitely more brake than tire, at least. They'll actually slide the tires a bit before the ABS starts kicking. They behaved well on the drive into work this morning, in traffic, in the rain. We'll see about how they dust later, I guess, but my experience with ceramic pads has been favorable on other cars.

Luckily the place I bought it from was understanding and let me return it, and the dealership actually had a new OEM one in stock.

My truck has been stumbling at WOT over 2500RPM almost like it's running out of fuel, and today it blew the o-ring out of the filter housing and sprayed diesel all over the engine bay washed the top of the engine with a solvent.

The filter looks clean but i replaced it anyways and put a new o-ring in and it still stumbles. It's obviously not a failing fuel pump, I'm almost wondering if something got through the filter and gooped up the fuel pressure regulator.

I've been trying different OBD2 software but all of it shuts the truck down when it connects, which is what most regular code readers do. I tried scanXL for PC, it doesn't shut the truck off but all it gets from the engine is RPM.

I guess next step is hitting things with a hammer and see what it do unless somebody else has a better idea.

e: found a pretty powerful program for fords called forscan, could run the injector buzz test, cylinder contribution. Everything seems to be running. cleared codes and beat on it again and the only thing that came up is the trans range sensor and the IAT sensor. I guess it's possible the range sensor is sending the trans into limp home mode and cutting power?

also, if you have a ford, get forscan, holy poo poo it works. the pc version is free.
