I wonder what the upkeep per year is on a traincar. Like, do you need to rent some track like a boat rents a dock slip while you're not using it? I assume so. e: Jesus Christ it's like 30k a year just to park the drat thing

Just live on an ever changing number of cruise ships. Some people do that as a form of assisted living. Bounce from cruise to cruise and food is covered along with housekeeping. Such is the lovely state of American healthcare that 4 weeks on a cruise ship isn't that much more expensive than a shared bedroom at an nursing home.

A cruise ship doesn't have people on call 24/7 to help you go to the bathroom or give you a sponge bath so yeah, obviously that's gonna be cheaper. If you can take care of yourself on a cruise ship you don't need to be in a nursing home.

It obviously doesn't work if you are infirm, but say you're 80 and get around okay but can't drive anymore and life's boring and who cares about your kids' inheritance. The party's over if you fall from a conga line and break and hip, but for moderate frailties it'd work. Nursing homes were a bad example. I was thinking more about assisted living apartments where housework and food are taken care of, but you have to wipe your own butt. Living 24/7 on a boat would be even cheaper than that with enough left over to spring for a drink package and a port window.

Living on cruise ships sounds like hell. You have a tiny room, no real privacy outside your tiny room (which is windowless unless you pay more for a cabin on the outside), people everywhere, get shuffled around to tourist stops, endless group activities and fake cheer.

Cruise ships are filled with BWM gamblers to the brim anyway addicted to terrible slot house edges, tolerate lovely Internet and can also stomach eating same old food over and over.

If you're on a vacation of any kind and the quality of internet is a concern you're doing it wrong. Stay home where there's good internet and save money.

Half the reason cruises are cool is because you go to sleep in one place and wake up in another that you have most of the day to wander around in, no real time is lost due to travel as there are always things to do on the boat. Unfortunately being elderly and frail and unable to walk very far puts a damper on that. Though breakfast in bed every morning is probably sweet.

# ? Jun 28, 2017 13:25 |
"being frail and weak" as if that's just a thing you "be" when you get old. Ever notice how there are two types of old people around you, the miserable perpetually sick fucks and the people who ran their whole life? The ultimate bad with money: diabetes and heart disease.

Imagine the cost of paid parking if every parking space had to be built out of reenforced steel beams and instead of going in and out you had to operate a complex series of levers and interchanges to route your space to the exit.

I have a couple of elderly relatives who are slightly frail and still enjoy as many cruises as they can afford. It's not a nursing home, but it's a great way to spend your twilight years, especially if you are healthy longer than your friends and your social circle is narrowing to "zero" due to the Grim Reaper. Everything is taken care of, so you can spend your limited energies walking slowly around quaint little port towns rather than dealing with airports and rental cars etc.

I imagine the reason it's only $135 for overnight parking is a combination of 1) they know that you're going to pay them to haul the car to and from the destination anyways and 2) there's probably a lot of leftover track out there from when trains were a bigger deal and there were more of them around, so just shoving your car onto a leftover side track isn't a huge deal.

27k for this vintage train car with a kitchen, servants' quarters, dining room, observation lounge, and 5 bedrooms. And it won't sink. Krispy Kareem posted:Am I having a stroke or does this not make any sense? The financial advisor's secret to getting wealthy is to never pay off your mortgage. He says that the reason people pay off their mortgage is to end their monthly payments for housing. But a-ha! Even if you pay off your mortgage, then you still have to pay for insurance and property tax! Therefore, you still have a "monthly payment" to make even after your mortgage is paid off. Having a monthly payment helps you budget and you will be richer if you budget because you never pay off your mortgage. Also, you have to GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to pay your insurance and taxes as separate payments now! It's really worth it to just keep paying interest on your mortgage forever to have it all in one payment. Reminder: This is in an article by a financial advisor giving tips on how to get wealthy and save money.

Another "useful" piece of advice from someone who is paid to be a financial advisor:quote:Although not for everyone, consider a 5/1 or interest-only mortgage for your primary residence. This will give you all the benefits of homeownership with the flexibility to leverage your home's growing value. Hello! I'm a financial advisor. I know people who regularly go on backhaul cruises to get work done, especially writing. That's when the cruise ships are just getting moved between ports. Backhauls aren't advertised as cruises: there are no stops, way fewer activities, and frequently the crew are all trainees. But the companies sell tickets to defray their costs. If you're interested in puttering across the ocean for a week or two with all your meals for $60 a day...well, it seems better-with-money than some resorts.

A bunch of my coworkers (who have been overweight for 10+ years) were discussing how they have been getting Vitamin B12 shots once a week for the past two years to lose weight. I haven't weighed them, but there does not appear to be any difference. The shots are "only" $40. Plus, you get 50% off if you bring in 10 or more people at once! They said that they go once a week, but I don't know how consistent that is. If they actually have been going every week for the past two years, then that is over $4,100 in B12 shots and they have either maintained or slightly increased their weight. I don't know why they are still going after two years and no results. I think it might be the horrible self-reinforcing BWM of my office. They all go as a group, recruit other coworkers for discounts, and tell each other they look skinny and amazing after each shot.
