All this talk of JRPG battle systems just makes me appreciate how much Undertale's combat system owns bones. Any one of its gimmicks (enemies acting differently based on what other monsters are in the battle with them, the WarioWare defense minigames, the golf swing meter for attacks, the meta elements like enemies taking away certain options or even using the interface to damage you, getting to use little adventure game logic puzzles to win fights peacefully) would be great on its own, and it's also the rare small numbers RPG that actually handles balance well.

i like the trails games' combat quite a bit, especially the turn delay mechanic. putting impede 2 on everyone and using their delay crafts on everything is just :discourse:

I really want to agree with this, but the sequels they did release just didn't grip me like the first one, for some reason, so I'm not sure how I'd receive them.

But I'm down for a re-release on virtual console for my 3ds, though. Internet-based item trading means not save scumming to get mission materials to finish all 300 missions

Every single character is an exposition dumpster and nearly every part of the story is filled with moronic plotholes either due to bad writing or inconsistencies juxtaposed with the actual powers the game introduces. It happens constantly and by the end, the story pulls the worst poo poo ever by telling you that the bad guys are actually good and you've wasted your loving time doing all this menial work.

What kind of plotholes were there? I'd rather not play through both games to try to find out.

Yeah, he's very skilled at the carving stuff and I like watching him just cut out the blocks. I don't really care that he's cutting out some other guy's video game design things, I just like how good this guy is at something so neat and skilled. I kinda wish the guy who did the art itself had done a jojo print or two tho, I feel like those would be interesting to look at.

That's so dumb.

Edit: Google tells me that Tactics/Tactical Role-play ing Games are called Simulation Role-playing Games in Japan. So they are tactics rpgs here and I'm not wrong. But I now accept srpg based on the fact that apparently it's a real thing.

It's a great game but the sprites have not aged well at all, emulating it on my phone it looked like a mess and I can't even imagine how bad all those lo-res prerendered sprites are gonna look in high definition on the SNES Mini.

Also gently caress those isometric jumping puzzles forever.

it's kind of a weird catch22 for me because that's annoying as hell but at the same time I appreciate beat em up games having discrete chapters you can select. a warning that this will end the chapter would be nice

Lufia 2 is such a good loving game. Lufia 1 is like.... fine, it's a very very standard jrpg that has too much NES in its aesthetic for a SNES game, and Lufia 3 has a lot of really good points but suffers from being a GBC game and bad procedurally generated dungeons. But 2 is so loving solid. Some of the best dungeon design in any game.
