it's not hard at all. the e-mails only start after you make your first donation. track the number of people who donated again after the e-mails started arriving in their inbox, by age group and maybe split up by various points in the campaign where e-mail density went sharply up. then you can make a conclusion about whether or not the emails raised a ton of money instead of talking out your rear end about how great they were

A shitty post? This calls for a dance of deduction.
Aren't insurance premiums not increasing in California due to the state government not trying to sabotage ACA? Thus it proves that ACA can work well?

no, health care rates even in the good states are rising, including california. around 10-15% per year. my premiums went up by around 30 dollars per month this year and i was paying around 275 per month last year. i checked to make sure i wasnt going insane and that was actually par in the biggest blue states.

I wager that there is some entrenched resistance (ie not just big donor money or whatever) from Dems who viewed ACA as their signature big career legislative accomplishment being told it kind of sucks. I don't know if that goes away if they get more public feedback/yelling about it or if you have to elect people divorced from the original process.

Joementum posted:

I think it's mostly people who see critique of ACA as a slander of Obama the person and are mad about that because they've built their politics on personality not policy.

but the thing is, the ACA really *is* on life support. Anthem announced yesterday that they were bailing from the individual exchange market in nevada:

quote:

Anthem Inc. said it would stop selling Affordable Care Act marketplace plans in most of Nevada next year. The move together with the departure of a smaller insurer leaves 14 of the state’s counties poised to have no insurer on its exchange.

The state insurance marketplace, the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, said that insurers had filed to offer plans only in Clark, Washoe and Nye counties, leaving the remaining, largely rural region without any exchange options for 2018. Around 8,000 people living in the 14 potentially bare counties currently have exchange coverage. Anthem had offered marketplace plans throughout the state this year.

In addition to Anthem, a smaller insurer, Prominence Health Plan, a unit of hospital company Universal Health Services Inc., will leave the Nevada exchange next year; Prominence had been selling marketplace plans in seven counties, including four of those that are now poised to lack exchange insurers.

Anthem’s pullback in Nevada follows announcements that it will completely exit the ACA marketplaces in Ohio, Wisconsin and Indiana.

dems have a choice in the absence of a GOP passage: continue to come up with ideas like more money for private insurers & increasing the mandate fine to make it more punitive or start reflecting voters' sentiments and support single-payer. That dems are actively squelching talk of single-payer at either the state or federal level shows how out-of-touch they are with their voters.

the furthest they can go is talk of an ephemeral public option but the co-ops that were created for this purpose were a miserable failure; some stranded people mid-year when the co-ops folded.

yes, well that's exactly what they do. and they also do tons of a/b testing to figure out what is working/what isn't

edit: also emails don't only start after you donate, these things typically rely on churning through tons of purchased/acquired donor lists

the point is that no, even if you work full-time you can still live in poverty and that is bad

yeah most Americans still think that people who don't work deserve to die in poverty so that wouldn't be a very good talking point, unfortunately

The compromise from the senate dems on the 3% takes on higher earners for schools was more of a small tax on lodging because it gets money from out of staters, a compromise thought up by a republican senator.

http://www.wmtw.com/article/lepage-a-shutdown-is-necessary-for-the-future-of-maine/10238932

quote:

The governor criticized an idea introduced Wednesday by State Sen. Roger Katz, a Republican, to increase the state lodging tax from 9 percent to 10 percent in October to help pay for the additional education funding.

“He puts that in – 10 days and it starts midnight [Friday] night. I’m not playing anymore. I’ve been talking to these people for six months. They’ve ignored, ignored, ignored.”

“If you want to play chicken, let’s play chicken,” the governor said, saying lawmakers have been putting off the budget for months. “A shutdown is necessary for the future of Maine.”

the real problem is that the lanyard types have convinced them that admitting that their signature big career legislative accomplishment sucks would be political suicide, not only reflecting badly on them but also feeding into Republican messaging to support the repeal effort. the consultant types have decided that everyone has to pretend that Obamacare is perfect until the Dems win a majority, at which point they can start talking about fixing it. can't campaign on fixing Obamacare problems because they're convinced that admitting the existence of flaws in the bill they helped write would make them look like stupid and bad legislators who voted for a bad bill

the problem with that logic, of course, is that it's elitist garbage that relies on the assumption that no one will notice the problems with Obamacare unless they're told about it by politicians and media. unfortunately, Obamacare affects real people, who have already figured out that the law has real problems because those problems are having a direct impact on their daily lives. pretending the flaws don't exist won't make them go away or fly under the radar
