Tsuki grabs a nearby pipe laying around and quickly leaps at Anxiety, following Takashi's example as Flagelo slashes the mass of flesh, sending an enormous chunk of ichorous flesh flying at the same time as the girl stabs the creature's open wound with her improvised weapon. "DISAPPEAR!"

As the gossiper tries to sink its teeth into Itsumi's wrist a faint translucent arcane barrier suddenly outlines her form, stopping its attack short and leaving her unharmed! Akio barely has time to smirk triumphantly when the gossiper behind him chomps down on him, hard. "Aaah!"

"I'm so sick of these fish. Kuru!"

The world bear appears and sends out a wave of acid, striking everything around Akio! Except for the fish... Noticing that the nearby tentacle is looking weak, he presses on his phone and Ambrose slashes the tentacle with his sword, severing the fleshy appendage! He then presses another icon, using the bandolier he got from Etemenanki, and summons one of the Cruel Lord's bolters. It immediately starts firing wildly at the Young Lady, but unfortunately fails to hit its mark.

"I think Itsumi has the right idea! Attacking it directly doesn't seem to do anything?"

Short Rest. All Surges used during Rest have additional +2.

Leaping skywards, Tsukiyo delivers a devastating pair of arcing slashes that rip through the fresh boils, covering her in a shower of rancid blood as the massive tumor roars in agony. Itsumi and Akio work together to pop one of the external organs, cut down a Young Lady and to rip one of the Tentacles from the ceiling. The two appendages bleed violently when slain and the Young Lady fades away, leaving behind a bleeding trail of flesh from her to the ceiling.

It is too much. All the damage you deal to extensions of the great tumor destroy it, like cutting off limbs and letting a person bleed out. With one final shudder and roar the entire room begins to bleed away and fade... all of the great red flesh dissolves, leaving behind only the stains and wounds you've suffered in the battle. Even the terrain around the classroom begins to pull together and knit itself back to normalcy, the halls shrinking down and the great gaps closing.

There is no treasure, just relief as your own anxiety is lifted. You sweep the rooms and the nearby halls and rescue the spread out coffins, escorting Takano, Akane and Sato back to your safe room.



When you clear Mutsumi's coffin, you find a janitorial closet behind it. Seems she was caught watching over something in the real world. As you approach the door and grip the doorknob you hear another distinct *Bing!* You open the door with some hesitation to reveal... the mousy little Mitsugu Ryuka, deep in concentration on a Friendtendo 4DS gripped in both hands. *Bing! Bing! 1-Up! Wahoo!* She seems to eventually become aware of you all and looks up, turning bright red in the face.

: "Uh-uh-uhm... uh.. is it time to go home yet!? Where's Mutsumi? What's going on?!"

You invite her back to the safe room as well...



: "Great job, everyone! That boss you got was huge!" Felix beams at you guys as you get back and recuperate.

: "This isn't a game. Isn't there a way out?" Takano, arms crossed, is all business as usual.

: "Ah, I took a look upstairs, but everything was destroyed. But I think there is still an upstairs, and going there seems like our last option." He gestures towards the original stairwell to the East in your safe room.

: "The boss came from the ceiling, and doesn't it feel like all the bad energy is above us, too?" Akane seems pretty collected right now. Her use of the term boss prompts a look of disbelief from Takano for a second.

: "I saw stairs down the hall but the way there was pretty bad." Sato shrugs.

Indeed, it seems the way ahead is clear, when you're ready.



Odd winds howl in the distance when you get near these stairs, the air cooled to a dramatic chill.

: "Why are we here, anyway? This seems a rather over the top rendition of a set of phobias... quite a few centered around girls." It's clear this irritates Takano. Of course, you feel a bit irritated at the ominous tidings of death the Young Ladies brought as well.

: "It's cool! It's exactly like that one series where everybody gets trapped in the haunted school and if they die they're stuck forever, feeling the same pain of that death! Right, Noriko!? Uhm... Death Jamboree, yeah?"

After a fresh scolding, Akane makes good on her earlier offer to help you guys heal, thanks to a first aid kit.

Away from the group Ryuka sits and fresh *Bing!*s rise from her handheld. Through your Soulshell you can recognize her as the player of the obnoxious little dragon-lizard avatar from your raid on Royal Boner's rock stage. Seems it's a lot harder to be a hot-head when you're face to face. The short, timid school girl is as cute as a middle-schooler and looks away if anyone looks her in the eyes!

"Uh, right. Just a sec!" Akio gives Felix a look of sheer incredulity. "I don't know how she does it, but I think she'd manage to be bubbly at her own funeral!" He plucks out the cotton balls he'd stuffed up his nose earlier and makes sure the bleeding has stopped. "You okay with overseeing us a bit more, Felix? You were pretty clutch back there."

Not thinking much about it he discards the bloody bits of cotton on the floor, but cringes before they even hit the floor, as he can't help but imagine Takano's disapproving stare bore into the back of his head. He elects to not to turn around to see if it was not just his imagination, and instead sets off toward the stairs. "Coming!"

"I don't think we're supposed to understand this place. It doesn't seem to obey the laws of physics, or reality. But it has rules. And that means we can beat it," Takashi gives the group a winning smile, heading towards the door with Itsumi and Akio.

Takashi adds his support for Felix, "I agree with Akio, keep doing what you're doing, Felix!"

"We have no idea what is going on, and the safest thing to do would be to wait here." She sighs... rubbing one forearm with her hand, she continues to accidentally bloody up her clean hand. But she fixes each of you with a stern look, and you know you're earning a bit of *responsibility* from Senpai. "But this isn't a regular disaster. We need you to find a way out. We'll keep safe here, I guess... and try to figure out a way to move these coffins when you get back."

: "Takashi, don't let anything happen to anyone." A note of concern behind that need to be resolute. "I think death here would be very literal..."

: Felix is flattered by your praise! He beams. "Keep in touch, right? I think the three of us can hold this room against anything... <Dee Pee Ess, Healer and Crowd Control!>" He grins at Sato and Ryuka. "And we've worked together before. I'll keep overseering for you."

: "UGH." Ryuka shares a glare with Tsukiyo before sharing it with the rest of you. "My bonuses are so much better..."

: "Good luck, you guys. Don't get lost or stay out too long, right? You can always come back here."

You step up to the second floor and are struck suddenly by how drat cold it is. Chilled to the bone, as it were. It must be under 40 degrees, even though you warped to this strange realm out of a clear Spring day, a humid heat before rain. Now it feels like the middle of the night, all warmth from the day absent. You stand atop rotting wood leading towards strange towering stone in the same shape as the school roof, yet utterly alien. Everything is breaking apart and stretching towards a yawning abyss.





Nothing too unusual, just more hazardous geometry. Takashi's friend, Masami, clinging for dear life to one of the stone outcroppings. Strange furniture that might be filled with precious treasure but no sign of obvious chests. The only way forward is clearly on the other side of the terrain and...

!

: Masami! A charming boy from your class, he holds a cell phone in one hand and is clearly panicking as he tries to cling to anything, stone crumbling around him, as though the rotting could accelerate based on the distress of those nearby. "H-hey! HEY! HELP!"

The wind howls intensely as something zooms by overhead, a massive booming gust of wind following it.



But you can see nothing. A moment later a tall shadow lands with a loud impact on the other side, stone shuddering and cracking! They straighten up and at this distance, all you can see are a pair of massive black wings spreading. Repeated rhythmic shuddering follows before the wings begin to repeatedly flap and a gale rises across the whole approach! It swiftly builds to a powerful hurricane gust!



The Wind Slows you and all Str/Dex checks are reduced by 5!

"Don't worry, Senpai, I'll watch out for everyone," usually jocular, Takashi's somber tone lets Takano know he takes her warning seriously, even though he follows it up with an easy smile. .attak barks, letting everyone know he's got their backs too. What a good dog.

Walking next to Akio, Takashi and .attak hop over broken pieces of terrain while surveying the land ahead. Arms around his chest, Takashi wishes he'd brought a winter training sweatshirt with him today, "Why is it so cold up here?" Even .attak's heat seems muted.

At least its empty up here, no students in dang...

"Masami!" Seeing his childhood friend hanging over the abyss puts jet fuel into Takashi's veins, and he takes off like a jet at Haneda Airport, directly into the piercing gust kicked up by the shadowy creature flying overhead. Heedless, he pushes on, driving himself to close the distance to his friend. As he nears the edge, Takashi does a belly dive like a runner sliding into home plate, runaway momentum sending him towards certain doom.

At the last second, strong, canine jaws pull him skidding to a halt at the mouth of the abyss, arms outstretched for the dangling boy.

"Masami! You've got to grab my hand!"

"So like what, we are in one of those 'Trapped in a MMO' kind of anime?" Tsukiyo shrugs at Noriko's statement. "Those are the ones I skip every season, guess I should start regretting that. In any case we have the same avatars we have in the game, and they have the same attacks... And you guys remember the crazy poo poo that happene..." She stops for a second, shuddering at the sudden insight she had. "What if... What if Takamura's death... Is related to what is going on now?"

Upon reaching the broken bridge, the schoolgirl quickly follows Takashi, doing a quick leap while Flagelo appears behind her and does an extending thrust of her sword at the floor on the other side of the gap, pulling the girl alongside her. "Someone's here! I'll try to keep him company!"

It sounds a bit more like the distant, haughty voice of his persona, Ambrose. If the air in the room was to be considered chilly, his words were approaching absolute zero. "The rules this world is built upon are known to me, your defenses are laid bare, and you don't threaten me. Frankly, you are beneath us. We cleaned up the mess downstairs already, and you're next. Flee. Now."

"Or die!" He rushes forward to close the distance.

You rally yourselves to quickly run down your antagonist as Takashi offers his hand to Masami. Masami looks over his shoulder with some hesitation at Takashi, dreading the fall below... he passes his thumb over the surface of his phone to wake it from idle mode, the light coming on. In that small bit of radiant yellow light the silhouette of a noble western-style knight is reflected standing on the ledge he struggles with, briefly casting a heroic light upon the boy. He takes to it and casts himself backwards, twisting to catch Takashi's hand and accept the save! The two pull up together and Noriko/Takashi shuffle backwards to make room for their friend.



Arcana: Failure, however, use of Arcana from Noriko and Akio reveals...



Powerful bands of static energy, tethered to the shadow from the ascent ahead! They spiral wildly through the air and fade away to an intangible ethereal state as they close to the shadow, becoming part of it's malevolent aura. It reminds you of several strange phenomenon you've witnessed related to your dreams or acquiring certain objects in DDW, or even seeing certain powerful creatures. Although this strange shadow presents itself as an antagonist, is it supposed to be... a Boss?

Arcana: Further Arcana, Nature or Dungeoneering checks can attempt to unravel the empowering aura!

Intimidation: 1 Success (Itsumi/Akio, extra roll assists the other.) The shadow is rattled!

Tsukiyo catapults across the divide and lands before the shadow, barely able to make out a humanoid shape with winds, standing unnaturally tall and wielding a staff wrapped in darkness. The rhythmic shuddering is caused by them repeatedly raising and stamping their feet, alternating in a powerful dance. At this range you can tell the creature is wreathed in powerful magic, obscuring form and identity. In reaction to the sudden arrival of Tsukiyo and the taunts, they falter and stop, lowering their staff. The sheath of dark static occasionally fails to hide a shining teal-steel ring at the top and several smaller rings, a classic khakkhara staff, the rings designed to collide repeatedly and produce gentle jingling.

A warped voice rises as the gale winds briefly subside. "HuMAN FOOLS!! YOu dOn't sCaRe mE!!" As you'd expect, the voice is garbled by static and all you can really make out is a rising high pitch of personal anger. The figure whips their staff about overhead in a brief two-hand manipulation and swings it down, the ring head slamming to the ground with a calamitous jinglin'. From the sky static ripples across the dark clouds before a pillar of wind with the breath of thunder slams down, blasting Akio and Itsumi for 24 Thunder/Lightning Damage! (+20% due to Weakness!) Akio and Itsumi are Moved 2 and thrown off the nearby ledges, Striking their weaknesses emboldens the Shadow, which raises a staff freshly crackling with lightning. In the reflection of the light you can make out angry red skin, sweating beneath the black illusions. The figure invokes a gust of wind and beats their wings, shifting backwards and drawing up fresh wind that buffets Tsukiyo for Push 1.

Akio, Itsumi: Your choice of Athletics or Acrobatics as a Move action to stabilize and pull yourselves up from Prone. Otherwise you'll begin to slip...

"Aah!" Itsumi shouts incomprehensibly after being struck by lightning and nearly thrown off the ledge. She manages to grab a hold of the edge and pull herself back up to standing, a giant scowl appearing on her face as she brushes herself off. "We don't scare you? Yeah? Well you don't scare us either!" Itsumi retorts. "You think we're just gonna run away from you?" She asks as she deliberately strides towards it. "You must not know who you're messing with! Is this supposed to be a game? Is this supposed to be DDW, and you're the big bad spooky boss?" she asks, in a mocking tone. "Well we've fought through instances with bosses much bigger, badder, and scarier than you and came out flawless. So think again if you're going to intimidate us! You're NOTHING to us! "Go away, you stupid bastard!" Tsuki tries to move forward, the Persona of the Iron Horse appearing before her as she is thrown forward by its wild advance! She lands in front of the shadowy presence with a resounding thud, sending it away while her Avatar quickly switches to another weapon, letting loose an arrow at it, but apparently missing it by a few inches. Tsukiyo: Moving through the Static deals an unresistable 10 Damage to you. The static weaves and garbles and passes over you, as well as tracking its original target. They brandish their staff and scream: "WhAT makES yOU THInk THiS IS A GAme?!" With a small rotation at the wrist they catch your arrow in the ring head of the staff and snap it in half mid-flight, bolts arcing across the staff and the ground beneath it.

Intimidate: Success. Quite angered but still resolute, it seems the figure is trying to delay you? And with the Static helping to bar the way, dealing with it may be prudent. (Intimidate/Bluff/Diplomacy will no longer yield successes.)

"Nnngh!" Akio groans in pain as the thunder strikes him, his muscles violently contracting as lightning courses through his body. He only just manages to regain control of himself and catch the edge of the floor with one hand before he's cast into the gaping abyss below. He looks down in shock, and watches as a bead of sweat trickles off his brow and falls, quickly disappearing into the empty void... Holy poo poo, that was too close!

He turns his head up, grabs the ledge with his other hand and puts the surge of adrenaline he was feeling to use, pulling himself up with such force that he practically lands on both feet. He doesn't waste any time getting away from the gap, moving closer to the shadowy figure.

So the shadow claimed this wasn't a game? Akio definitely felt inclined to agree at the moment, but that couldn't be the entire truth... That static, he'd seen it before. Both when playing DDW in the past and now when they first were thrown into this place. Is it something that causes the worlds to bleed together? Without any facts it was a pointless train of thought, it's not like he could look into the... Wait, maybe he could?! No, that would be ridiculous... Right? Akio pulls out his phone and frantically starts fiddling with it, and to his relief he finds the app he was searching for still installed. He'd only briefly played around with it before and hadn't put in any serious time to learn it, but it was a custom program that some DDW theorycrafters use to evaluate game data, mining information that was kept hidden in the normal interface, so that they could improve their optimizations. It was a bit of a gray zone and most likely considered breach of the terms of service, but he definitely didn't give one poo poo about that right now!

He opens up the program, feeling doubtful about any chance of success... But then the screen spits out innumerable lines of code!

(I think I've forgotten to keep up on this after combat and in discovered loot, so everybody in the party gets 300g each.)

Akio: Arcana Success. You produce an active connection to the Static and it responds in kind, a tendril drifting to your phone with undeniable intent and connecting. The static floods your phone screen momentarily before solidifying and taking on form, order from chaos. Source code floods across the screen in a frenzy before that too statics out for a second. Everything condenses down to a simple counter as the static is ripped out of the air around you and the illusion over the shadow fades, as well as some of the power in their aura:

Everybody regains the use of a Daily Power(Standard or Fate or Item) of their choice.



With a beat of their wings the figure immediately erupts into the sky and zooms off ahead.



The winds are gone and the way ahead is open.

Traveling down the stone hallway, you see vague outlines of framework that suggest the architecture was based on the outline of the school before stonework was laid over it, walls and roof were stripped away to create a more visually haunting area. The hallway leads to several other stairwells that would descend back into the mutated store, but the figure retreated skywards and all roads and halls lead to only one path up, to an spiral stair-well without walls leading straight up to a flat stone plateau, supported by the ominous stonework pillars rising randomly from the abyss around the original schoolgrounds.

The stairwell leads to a halfway point wide enough to rest, where you'd expect to find halls branching off to the rest of the floor. But there are none, and it is simply a seating area that would be scenic and comfortable if everything wasn't clouded darkness and the threat of death. Two others don't seem to mind, though.





An old man wearing an entire shop on his back, and a handsome cat expecting rain. Above the cat hovers the familiar tag <Immunity Cat>. A supernatural meme warrior that protects all DDW players from ill omen. Petting him allows you to Short Rest and to change Support Personas.

Unicorn

Ok, this is... This is too weird. She has joked about the possibility before, but the fact that there is a videogame NPC shop inside the dungeon used to be means that Noriko was completely right about them being trapped inside the game. After petting the cat for a second, Tsuki turns to the vendor. "I, uh... I'll take two potions please?" With a loud beep, a yellow counter appears on her phone displaying the number 1560, then quickly subtracting a hundred coins from it before disappearing from the display. "...?!"

The Bridge
Hauling Masami up, Takashi pulls his friend into an immediate hug and then grips him by the shoulders, "<Dude!> That was way too close. What the hell are you doing out here?" .attak adds his consternation with a short whuff and a super-heated exhalation.

Trying to suppress the adrenaline, Takashi lets him go, gesturing back towards the way downstairs, "You need to get down with the others. It isn't safe here. Also, when did you start playing DDW?" A grin creeps into his expression, and he finds himself unable to shake just being glad to see his friend.

If Masami wants to tag along, Takashi still thinks its safer to head back to Felix, but will be glad for the help if Masami persists.

Before heading upwards, Takashi touches the coffin, concentrating on the saferoom with Felix.

Rest Stop
Takashi and .attak wait for the others to finish, taking the opportunity to rest. When an opportunity presents itself, he pushes himself off the wall to do a little shopping.

"Good evening, Ojii-san, is business good so far from the beaten path? At least you've got a captive clientele," he smiles, meaning no malice, "A mocha and a potion, please."

: Masami looks embarrassed, like you've caught him in the middle of something. "Ah, Takashi, you're always linking me to your stream. It looked really cool! The game, and all the things you do in it!" He laughs a little. "I was hoping to tell you after I gained a few levels, when we could group together." He looks over to the stairs you've come down. "Right, uhm, I think I'll head down. A safe room?" Power in this realm seems a delicate thing. Somebody without enough is just waiting to die, and they won't have a safe respawn... Masami grins. "Hey, you're going up? Take it easy, <dude>. I was chased by that shadow before." Masami turns a little red in the face. "She's relentless." He heads downstairs to the safe room, waving to you all. "Later!"

Touching and saving the last coffin-bound student, a punkish looking boy, you head upstairs to the little rest stop. Once you've made your preparations, you head up. (If you haven't posted yet just catch up now! Last chance to swap Supports or buy something!)

Static permeates everything briefly and images of a "loading screen" flash inbetween it all as you reach the final height, walking along a flat stone hallway without ceiling or walls.



You've risen above the dark clouds and approach a beautiful otherworldly garden. Overhead, things have gotten... orderly.



Elements of classical fantasy assemble and disassemble in the sky overhead, everything drawn and cast towards one central spot, becoming ethereal and fading away entirely as it comes or goes. As you approach the garden flashes of static rip the air open around you and reveal gentle moving images, old memories barely anyone might recall. The founding of the school, decades of students using the rooftop for lunch time meetings, after school hang outs, mid-class places to hide and recover their senses. Things are pleasant and almost entirely silent when you see dozens of past students sharing moments of friendly bonding, or even tender love. The static bordering those dark memories frays and rises to match that of anxiety. Then it rises to a relentless hiss as one memory is punctuated by a student leaping from the roof, their fate undeniable. This was two decades before the school had a garden and safety fencing...

New memories bud, the static receding entirely as the administration works to help those who grieve, and to turn the site of a tragedy into something nice. The beautiful garden plays host to more of the student body and staff, host to frequent walks that birth creative spirit and calm minds. Host to dozens of confessions, the static fraying if it's not meant to be. With each new friendship and relationship a red thread is joined between those who start it and the garden. With one final hiss you approach the center of the garden and see a young man sitting on a bench beneath a great otherworldly tree that is host to thousands of red threads that extend into the featureless darkness on all sides. The boy sits with his legs spread wide and his elbows resting on his knees, his head in his hands as he looks down at the ground in concern, eyes strained.



It is Hideaki, one of the students in your year, one of Akane and Sato and Noriko's friends. Beneath his feet darkness with brief spreads of static radiates outwards and bleeds down into the school. From the top of his head the bits of stonework making the mindscape overhead fade into being and drift away. At Hideaki's side stands another young male student, this one wearing a pitch-black version of the Naoki Academy male winter-wear and a kitsune mask with a mocking smile. The wind occasionally shifts overhead as something passes by with amazing speed.





"I guess I have you to thank for clearing some of the anxiety in his head. I'd appreciate it if you didn't muck about and interfere, it took long enough for Him to give me a wounded heart." He reaches over and passes a head through the stream of consciousness rising from Hideaki's head, causing it to briefly distort on its way up. Hideaki seems entirely catatonic, unaware of anything around him. "Funny how meaningless all of this is, how his head would clear with a good night's sleep. But to the soul in the middle of torment, everything takes on the same intensity as literal apocalypse."

: "Are you here to join the game?" Everything he says is warped by static, only low hisses and garbling streaming at the moment. With each audible hiss a fox's tail made of the element rises and sways from his shoulders and waist.

Heading over to the shop, she examines the stock and gasps. "...cool! Forneus, I know all about this one!" She quickly hands over the gold "...i'll also have two mochas, and an order of noodles, please."

Seeing Hideaki in this state, Noriko takes a few steps back, her expression darkening as she realizes the consequences of her bargain with Satan. "this... what... what have I..." Noriko pulls her arms close to her body, clenching her fists and looking down at her feet.

As Noriko turns inward and withdraws, the dead expression on Memento-Mori's face hardens. The persona steps past Noriko. "what have you done to him?" she says in her usual monotone, but tinged with a hint of contempt. "...do you serve... Him? are you here to collect, or just some opportunist?"

Akio watches the Tengu beat a hasty retreat with curiosity after the static had been ripped away from her. "Huh, so that actually worked..." While a million questions remained, and a bunch of brand new ones to boot, he felt relieved to finally have one piece of the puzzle to what the hell was going on in this strange world. Though it seemed like a fever dream at first, this was proof that a foundation of rules and logic existed somewhere underneath. If he learned more maybe he could find some way to exploit them...

"I'm alright." he responds to Tsukiyo, then turns around to check on the others. Looked like everyone else was as well, including Takashi's friend. It's a good thing they had arrived when they did or he might not have been so lucky!

Akio heads over to the old man's shop and considers his meager gold wallet. Sheesh, why is everything so expensive! I should've grinded more gold when I had the chance... "Uh, you don't take Yen, do you..." Guess not. "Maybe next time then."

After concluding his fruitless shopping Akio walks up to the immunity cat and takes a moment to pet it gently over the back. Even though the cat was wearing a poncho that covered its soft fur it was a most relaxing and rejuvenating experience. What a good cat.

Mori asserts herself again, as Noriko seems to continue to shrink inward. "...we died. we found Satan in the land of the dead, and he traded us our soul for a... human heart."

"i... i should have known better... deals with devils... all the books..." Noriko stammers out, shaking her head.

: Joker gives Tsukiyo a brief dead-pan look, even for a mask. "Tch... meathead idiot." Then he paces around Hideaki's side, seeming to be aware of Takashi's presence and always keeping the comatose boy between them. He faces the others as he does it and speaks. "Yes, I took an opportunity He offered. I imagine you thought he was speaking a bit literally, but it looks like he gets to reap two harvests for your actions. Pretty good stuff... heh heh, maybe even three. You know the last circle of Hell is reserved for traitors."

He points at Takashi, now facing him as the two pace, looking over the top of Hideaki's head. "I'm not afraid of you, but luckily, I also don't really care about you. Or him. Or them. I think you're catching onto the existence of the game. That He wanted to set this up, and even if He couldn't, or even if you wouldn't play along, He would find another way. I went to Him and I asked for help, and He told me an opportunity would come if I watched for it."

"That it's expected to experience strange things. That history works in cycles, and He plays these games with others, and they always have, and they always will. And when the games resolve, you see unusual events occur, or great people rise. Because they find things, things that are real, even after the games. But a VR MMO didn't exist a thousand years ago, so some other battlefield had to exist. Probably a lot of wars, maybe battles of culture, even art and literal sports. But I'm kind of going on here... you're already in over your head."

He stops behind Hideaki, lowering his hand and tilting his head forward to stare down the whole group.

: "This game has begun, and Digital Devil Worlds is the template. In the grand scheme of DDW... you're small fry." He raises his hands and flexes his fingers, generating ambient fields of growing static. "I bet you've seen weird things." Static around things, static around Royal Boner's treasure, static around Takamura's girlfriend using his log-in, static in your dreams, static in the mask Takamura sent Itsumi, the supernatural anger and attention the sprite of Bael'waag turned on Akio, static flooding the Iron Horse when Geitar somehow hacked it and tried to bury you in a full party wipe. "Strands of fate, places where lots of feelings converge, strong emotions tied to things, and to people. To other people involved in the game, to things remembered, to strong bonds. That's why I'm here. This is one of them, these convergences of Fate. And when somebody has enough Fate, their ego overrides the world's briefly..."

He taps his fingers together in a drumming rhythm and begins to weave the static into a picture, flickering images of familiar faces. Maybe you've met them(Akio), or maybe you've seen them as the original big streamers(Takashi), or simply heard about them or even used their advice to play DDW, maybe envied their top level armor and weapons. Joker audibly snarls and swipes his hand, the static flickering out of existence. "You're nothing. I need this power to take on ORDER. And you're not the only muscle here, doggo." The wind beating above has stopped and someone is unseen above, waiting.

: "We don't have to be enemies. But I won't let you stop me, either. If you don't care about ORDER, I could let you out and it's back to happy school days. Or we could even work together... if you have a reason to care." You remember being told that Takamura is dead...

The air is heavy and all is silent, interrupted only by the occasional manifestation of Joker's fox-tails.

What could you possibly care about a guild enough for to kill one of our friends? You seem like a monster more than anything else to me!" Itsumi says incredulously. "Why would we work with you if you would just come kill us if we get too powerful? Why go after ORDER anyway? And even then, why come after us and not just go after the ORDER players themselves?" Itsumi catches her breath after a hail of questions. "I can't say I'd ever want to work with someone who killed one of my friends."

No matter how Joker moves, Takashi and .attak are always there, always standing on the precipice of violence, always waiting for the Fox to try to outfox the Hound.

"This battle is like many others; we are knights, scholars, artists, and savants. Like many others before us. But unlike them, we see the stars and know their names."

Another step, another snarl, boy and dog, mirroring each other as closely as a reflection.

Raising his hand to pat .attak's muzzle, Takashi continues, "My friends still conjure their avatars, but mine doesn't flicker. That is because in this place I came to understand him. I am him. Loyal, brave, and strong. Like a hound," .attak whuffs to punctuate the comparison.

"And like a hound, if you run, I will bring you to ground. If you fight, well, you already seem to know the outcome of that," another predatory smile, "and if you threaten my friends again, you and your Master will know the distinct feeling of fangs in your throat. Make your choice, and a live or die with it. I have made mine, and I am ready to seize my fate."

Noriko seems to abruptly shake off her anxiety. "...this is over... a... a guild war?" she says with an incredulous expression.

The expression seems to translate over to her persona. "ehhhhhhhhhh? what happened, kid? did they gank you?"

"...i bet they beat him on a drop in a raid..." Noriko adds, stifling a chuckle

"...or maybe he didn't get through the app process!!" Mori snorts

"....heh.... hehheheh... it's pretty sad to take video game rivalries this seriously! how pathetic!" Noriko's cold expression punctuated with a note of false pity and contempt. "you couldn't even go straight after them... you play games on easy, don't you?"

Mori and Noriko speak in unison now; "well, it doesn't matter. no more deals. if you hurt him or any of my friends, i'll kill you without hesitating."

: "Tch... idiot goth." Joker covers his mask with one hand, shaking his head. "And an idiot optimist. Tell me, do you know who ORDER players are? In real life?" The only reply you could give is silence. "I didn't think so, and I didn't kill your friend." He paces around Hideaki again, suddenly grabbing the side of his upper arm and turning his head away from Takashi. "Not everyone is as honest as you are. Or noble. Or naive... I could've come and gone if you let me... I just wanted to drive you away, like the little idiot knight..." You recognize this as a description of Masami's briefly seen Avatar, and realize that everyone you've seen here has been as they appear in real life, from your friends standing here now to Felix, Sato and Ryuka. Joker seems to buck the trend and you become aware that even his clothes and body are giving off small bits of static, projecting his own Avatar as a disguise.

: "But I'll just take your power too." He holds his hands up and flexes his fingers, producing a fresh field of static. Almost in response the skies above boom and part and a massive torrent of wind crashes down into the stand-off around Hideaki. Something descends and prompts Takashi's hound to draw him away lest he be part of the fresh crater smashed into the stone.

Hideaki doesn't seem to notice or react to anything but he also doesn't seem to suffer from the impacts, wind and debris rustling through his hair and clothes as he remains still.



A tengu. It's undeniably a tengu. Standing a head taller than anyone in the group and wearing an outfit you'd associate with traditional attire but with clear modern influence. Custom-made? Carrying the same khakkhara with teal-steel framing and wearing sturdy wooden geta with single tall bases, chipped and cracked. Her manic eyes fearlessly glare you down from above a prominent stark red nose and she has a huge smile, sizing up Takashi. Most alarming is the total absence of any shadow or static particle effects and the sheer realism of the beast. A real-life tengu?

: "So sorry, but when it comes to idiots I've got you out-matched."

: The tengu immediately looks over her shoulder and yells: "What was that?!"

: "So sorry, I'm wearing a mask. I said you were invincible in combat."

: .. Satisfied, she turns back to your group and spins her staff, taking up a very aggressive combat stance. "Pii-pii-pii-pii-pii-hii-hii-hii..." She stomps one foot and the ground tremors, wind drawing around her. "That's RIGHT! My name is Shiokaze, and you can think about me when I throw you into the abyss!"

On Initiative: Shiokaze summons a powerful gale! Movement against(North) or through(East/West) counts as Difficult Terrain! Movement with(South, South East, South West) is twice as fast! (1 Move = 2 Squares crossed, or 1 if you want.) Ranged Attacks(Including AOEs) that pass through it in any direction suffer -2 Attack. While standing in the gale, Shiokaze and Joker have Light Cover(+2 Defenses.) AoEs that detonate into gale squares without passing through it are still at -2.

Joker stands behind Hideaki and begins to weave the static along his stream of consciousness as it emerges, then focuses and blasts into the stream, looking like he's blasting the boy's brain directly. Shiokaze wastes no time at all unfurling massive black raven-feathered wings and flying forward in an immediate charge!




Gale: (Teal) N, NW, NE, E and W Movement counts as Difficult Terrain. S, SE and SE Movement is twice as effective. Ranged attacks passing through or entering Gale squares are at -2 Attack. Grants Shiokaze and Joker Light Cover.

The Top

As soon as Shiokaze turns back to the group, she finds a mountain of muscle and teeth affectionately called .attak barreling toward her, paced by his teenage owner, "Sorry, your team is already full on idiots, Joker."

Without slowing, the beast clamps his jaws around the Tengu's leg, and keeps right on moving, sending her spinning.

Continuing towards the real target, Takashi and the hound cover the distance despite the gale winds. Coming in low, fangs of molten metal puncture the masked fox, just as Takashi punches the statically charged man, throwing his weight into it.

"I guess you want to die tired."

(Edit: If you use a ranged attack on an enemy you're adjacent to, it can be done without the -2 for ranged. And Shiokaze will gain +2 Def/Light Cover if she's moved to a Gale square.)

Takashi crashes into and by Shiokaze, who goes down in a flurry of upended wings and kicking legs, staff clattering loudly on impact. He follows up with a good proper chomping on Joker, who flinches terribly from the impact, the interruption reflected in a sudden reverberation from the static.

: "I'm suffering catch-phrases, here.. Shio!"

: "Piririhihihihahahahaha!" Shiokaze immediately stands as a minor and uses the Gale to Move 4, rocketing towards Noriko and Itsumi and swinging her staff in a wide arc, the sound of thunder building as it reaches the end of it's swing! Though it's terrible form and her momentum is ruined by the lingering effects of Noriko's mental assault, the impact rattles Noriko down to the bones through her Avatar's protection for 24 Physical/Thunder Damage! The lapse in technique lets Itsumi meet it with her own spear and parry the sound of thunder, evading the attack entirely! The sheer force of the swing is unlike anything even the monstrous shadows were capable of... a real tengu, and a real superhuman!

Shiokaze beats her wings and holds steady, grinning wildly. She deftly reaches to her neck and plucks something, casting tiny red orbs to either side. Once that is settled she tenses up her wings and lets her geta touch the floor before she begins to rapidly step in place, the motion causing the floor to rumble. The winds change as she holds her staff behind her back and glares from side to side, one open hand held forward, daring anyone to take her on!

: "I guess I can put down a mad dog... if that fool occupies the rest..." He raises his left hand, which was the source of the reverberation and now free of the channeling, and points to Takashi. "Persona!" A flickering static-flooded manifestation of a massive nine-tailed fox appears sitting at attention behind him and flicks each tail skyward in sequence, producing halos of tricky fox-fire that swarm him in sequence, coming from multiple angles in small clusters! Two of the will-o-wisps find Takashi and violently tether to his torso, pulsing frequently to flood his body with cold and rot for 7 + 7 Ongoing Cold/Necrotic! Takashi's Necrotic Resistance should reduce this to 8 total for now, but the damage will continue until Saved against. Each Save clears 1 of the 2 Stacks!

: "Hold it, this is for real..." Imbuing himself with Fate, Joker draws in a great flood of power from Hideaki and throws his other hand skywards, producing an ethereal image of the wicked kimono'd man, the Satan that Noriko saw. It's visible to everybody now for a moment before an eruption of brimstone shrouds him and turns him to a perfect black silhouette. The flaming man deals a circle of cards that rockets around the arena, coming to a rest in sequence, each card set at a diagonal angle that only allows the corners to join. Each card rests for a second, the card backs visible with shadowed silhouettes of your five Avatars. With a gesture the figure makes every card flip over in a dramatic shuffle and the entire sequence fades away, the ethereal Satan fading as well. In the last moments of fading, he rockets towards someone but has fully vanished by the time he gets close! Joker himself chuckles as Takashi. "Every good trick requires set up."

One PC is "Cursed"! They can Save against it and will automatically succeed, but only if offered a prompt to roll a Save by an outside source! Powers, Support Personas, Utilities, Items! Beware, a PC without the Curse can still be asked to Save, even if a success will accomplish nothing!
